UPDATE: The phone is now available. Check the latest post for the prices. http://www.windowscentral.com/hp-announces-elite-x3
Today at Mobile World Congress HP announced the long-rumored HP Elite x3 smartphone running Windows 10 Mobile. The ultra-powerful Windows Phone is aimed at enterprise and business markets and offers a 'three in one' solution for companies. Also, besides the phone HP also revealed the HP Desk Dock and HP Mobile Extender accessories that when combined with the Elite x3 with Windows Continuum lets mobile employees work from anywhere at any time. The HP Elite x3 features a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor, 4GB of RAM, 64 GB of internal storage, a 6-inch 2K display with Corning Gorilla Glass 4, dual Iris and fingerprint scanners for security, and dual front-facing stereo speakers by Bang & Olufsen for unparalleled conference call quality.
[t]http://www.windowscentral.com/sites/wpcentral.com/files/styles/larger/public/field/image/2016/02/HP_Elite_x3-Lead_Promo.jpg?itok=aU3vQiEM[/t] I think this was the flagship people were waiting for. Although, it's got an uphill battle already; I've already seen a lot of comments saying "Great hardware. Now put it on android and I'll buy it" without second thought. Here's a video about it:
"Great hardware. Now put it on android and I'll buy it"
I hate this type of attitude, Windows Phone is very good and the more devices the better.
Windows Phone as an OS is great, the only problem is really the lack of apps. I'd buy such a phone in an instant for my family, but they want apps that are simply not available for these kind of phones.
I hate this type of attitude, Windows Phone is very good and the more devices the better.
Android's tablet UI is still shit. Sure there are more Android apps and all that but a lot of them are still shit in tablet view which is even worse when shown up on a computer monitor.
I hate this type of attitude, Windows Phone is very good and the more devices the better.
Switching from Android to WP is like Windows to Linux. You're sacrificing a lot of good software for that.

People don't buy windows phones because there are no apps, so there's no userbase, so app developers don't consider windows phone in development, so no apps are made, so people don't buy windows phones because there are no apps... All it needs is for either app developers or users to break the cycle, but doing that is very hard when there's already extremely establish platforms out there. On a side note, it's good that HP is making this and not Microsoft, because WP needs companies other than Microsoft to be committed. On another side note, the first 'WP sucks because I said so' article has come in: http://techcrunch.com/2016/02/21/hp-announces-yet-another-mobile-product-that-will-fail/
HP Announces Yet Another Mobile Product That Will Fail HP clearly didn’t get the memo that Windows Phone is dead. Meet HP’s first flagship smartphone since the Palm Pre 3. HP calls Elite x3 a “revolutionary mobile platform” but it’s not. It’s just another also-ran from HP. ... Essentially, HP built and announced its first modern smartphone on a platform that most indicators say is dying. There’s still time for HP to change its mind. The company isn’t announcing the price at this time and says the Elite x3 will be released this summer — it wouldn’t be surprising if the device is shelved prior to the release.
I remember on the conference when they showed how you can plug a monitor, mouse and a keyboard to the phone and use it as a PC. Does anyone know is it a full Windows PC then, like can you install a Windows game then, or it's limited stuff ?

With virtualization you'll apparently be able to run some x86 programs too, but that has to be developed separately.

Anything you can install on a Windows phone will run on this thing, but that's not really saying much.
nice to see non lumias.
I hate this type of attitude, Windows Phone is very good and the more devices the better.
Unfortunately history is not on its side, with the PC there was a time where the IBM PC architecture and DOS and/or Windows simply became the norm and there was nothing the non-clone makers could do to stop it. Even with better hardware, graphics, sound and OS features like the Amiga had it still wasn't enough.
Any word on what carriers this would be coming to? I've wanted to try a windows phone forever now but Sprint has never carried a good windows phone. This looks nice either way. Even if it doesn't come to sprint, if its successful it might inspire more companies to produce more WPs.
How's the codebase security (and ability for the user to fine tune security) on Windows Phones? Also how easy is it to develop for WP, and what tools are available besides Visual Studio? I never owned any smartphone and WP is starting to look like a real option vs Android.
Switching from Android to WP is like Windows to Linux. You're sacrificing a lot of good software for that.
It's a vicious cycle. Not a lot of people uses WP because there aren't a lot of good software on WP, not a lot of software dev develop software for WP because not a lot of people use WP.
Shit that's a good lookin' phone, I'd buy it. What was the last phone HP made? Wasn't it the Palm Pre era?
That speaker design is slick. B&O, too.
Great hardware, now put it on a system that actually has apps.
Great hardware, now put it on a system that actually has apps.
Or people could stop being lazy and make apps for WP.
Or people could stop being lazy and make apps for WP.
There's already issues with apps focusing primarily on either Android or iOS, while the secondary choice have a atrocious version. You can bet that appmakers ain't gonna be bothered with a third. Blackberry solved that with clean room emulating the app environment for Android, but as per usual they fucked something else up big time.
Tbh I don't really see the point in switching to windows phone. I had one, it was okay. More competition is always good but it just doesn't really stand out.
Or people could stop being lazy and make apps for WP.
It's not about laziness but more so there being no money in it It's a catch 22
wasn;t there supposed to be something microsoft was doing to make apks run on windows phones?
wasn;t there supposed to be something microsoft was doing to make apks run on windows phones?
Islandwood and Astoria, the latter project being frozen iirc. A couple of apps has been ported using Islandwood, though, if I'm not totally off.
What does Windows phone OS do better than Android to justify it's existence? Personally I find windows phone OS to be very difficult to navigate in comparison to Android. Not to mention the somewhat lacking app support for it. I just see it as a completely unnecessary piece of software that exists just so Microsoft can have their own proprietary OS, not because they need it for any reason. This HP looks good, but I have 0% interest in any windows OS phone.
If I had to replace my iPhone 6, I'd probably get a Nextbit Robin or a Windows phone. I never use apps, so I'm like the prime market demographic for this kind of thing. As long as I have Spotify and email, I'm fine.
Or people could stop being lazy and make apps for WP.
People are not being "lazy" if the RoI for developing on WP is low Android development is already incredibly behind in the revenue per app department and on WP it's nonexistent, so why would anyone bother developing an app they can't get a return on
wasn;t there supposed to be something microsoft was doing to make apks run on windows phones?
Windows RT, but it was a mess and they quickly abandoned it
HP is wasting their time and money. No one is interested in WP.
