Schumer to Trump: I'll talk about my Putin meeting, will you?
20 replies, posted
Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) is firing back at President Trump after Trump tweeted a photo of Schumer with Vladimir Putin, saying he's perfectly willing to talk about his meeting with the Russian leader and challenging the president's team to do the same.
"Happily talk re: my contact w Mr. Putin & his associates, took place in '03 in full view of press & public under oath. Would you &your team?" the Senate minority leader wrote.
Moments before, Trump called Schumer a "total hypocrite" for demanding a probe into the Trump campaign's potential ties to Russia, tweeting a 2003 photo of Schumer and Putin eating doughnuts during Putin’s trip to New York to attend the opening of a Russian gas company’s station.
“We should start an immediate investigation into @SenSchumer and his ties to Russia and Putin. A total hypocrite!” Trump tweeted.

Krispy Kreme in the Kremlin
It is honestly humiliating to have this chucklehead in the Oval Office. The leader of the free world is a childish clown.
I stand by my senator, the fact that Trump is calling for investigation of congressmen now (albeit not seriously hopefully) to divert attention is pretty damn worrying.

Referring to the US as the "Free World" is kinda outdated these days, you guys are getting too fucked in the arse by Trump, Republicans, and the general politics, to be considered that.
Schumer's tears are the salt in the wounds of this epic burn he made on Trump. God, damn.
Referring to the US as the "Free World" is kinda outdated these days, you guys are getting too fucked in the arse by Trump, Republicans, and the general politics, to be considered that.
Trust me, we haven't been the "Free World" since shortly after our nation's founding. Check out the Alien and Sedition Acts. The French kinda out-freedomed us shortly after, (although it took them a bloody revolution and Napoleon to finally do it.) They were waaaay more progressive than us, and even a dictator like Napoleon managed to spread liberalism, Jewish emancipation, the ideals of the revolution and secularism across Europe during his wars against the reactionary monarchs of Europe while our slave holding ancestors began a ceaseless, expansionist conquest and wholesale slaughter of everything west of the Appalachian mountains. Our ancestors had to fight the bloodiest war in our history just to end slavery ffs.
Post-ww2 20th century saw us undermining democratically elected governments, fermenting revolution in third world countries, and providing kill lists to dictators with the names of communists listed, among other atrocities (supporting Saddam in the Iran-Iraq war, then invading and deposing him 20 years later when he was no longer "useful"), McCarthysim, Jim Crow, the list goes on.
I love my country, but calling us the "Leader of the Free World" is a fucking farce to anyone who knows a lick of history.
Lel the fucking Soviet Union beat us to women's suffrage and Totalitarian China might beat us to universal healthcare. Our failures and actions antithetical to the ideals of our revolution are a national disgrace, with Donald Trump being the latest manifestation.

Um, dude I agree with you normally but you need to crack open the history book again. Revolutionary France was not a bastion of civil rights, and while the US is flawed its never been not free, at least in comparison to other Western Democracies.

To be fair, has that old expression ever been true? Our history is rife with exceptions to it.
Leader of the free world, except for blacks, women, Native Americans, Chinese, Japanese, Irish, Mexicans, gay people, Muslims, etc, etc.
There are no "good old days" for American freedom.

France beat us to universal male suffrage, and they beat us to the abolition of slavery (read: without the neccesity of a cataclysmic civil war that economically destroyed half of the country and killed 600,000 Americans. Thanks, South.). The French Revolution in general arguably had a more powerful impact on the world than ours did when it came to ending absolute monarchy, challenging the divine right to rule, and promoting democracy.
I will concede that the French did fluctuate between authoritarianism and liberalism with regards to civil liberties throughout the 19th century, what with the restoration of the monarchy/Napoleon III's reign limiting press freedoms and the like, and America today remains pretty damn free when it comes to individual liberties (first amendment being a huge one), moreso than France, but I stand by my assertion that calling the United States the "leader of the free world" is disingenuous, all things considered. In fact, we were recently downgraded to a 'flawed democracy,' lol.

Not being the leader of the free world =/= not free.
Funny how he's always willing to point at someone then acknowledge his own shortcomings. Has he ever once shown a genuine bit of humility or acknowledged he screwed up once in his entire career?

Nope

Freedom isn't a sliding scale between not free and most free. The United States has legalized gay marriage before Germany, but I'm not going to use that to say America is more free than Europe is.
(read: without the neccesity of a cataclysmic civil war that economically destroyed half of the country and killed 600,000 Americans. They might not have had a civil war to end slavery but they also never really stopped practicing forms of it, just like most of the colonial powers.
No one is disagreeing that the United States isn't the most free nation on Earth but all you ever post about is how nothing short of FULL COMMUNISM will be enough. Trying to say the United States was less free than Revolutionary France is just dumb comparisons like you see high schoolers make when they're debating whether samurai can beat knights or something. It's apples to oranges. You're just picking out things to prove a point that nobody here even really disagrees with.

The Saddest Part of this, I can See the GOP And AG Sessions approving the investigation.
They literally baited her. The asked her if she ever met with somebody specific who she did get photographed with once who's name she probably wouldn't recall because they had that photo on hand, from 7 years ago.
She may have never been properly introduced to him. All the photo proves is that they were in the same place.
This is sloppy chess-playing by the administration if it is this transparent to even me.

Okay, let's break down the argument step by step, because I think there's a breakdown somewhere in communication.
-Orkel makes a point about the U.S. not being the leader of the free world anymore.
-I make a post agreeing with him, and further reinforce his point by arguing that we haven't been since shortly after our revolution.
-I draw comparisons to post-Revolutionary, post-Napoleonic France as evidence to support my claim.
-You tell me that Revolutionary France isn't a bastion of civil rights (I never said it was), and then tell me that the US has never been 'not-free' in comparison to other western democracies (I never said it was, I said we were less free than POST-REVOLUTIONARY, POST-NAPOLEONIC France and cited their expansion of suffrage and abolition of slavery as evidence to support this claim).
-I concede that the US is more free than France when it comes to civil liberties, but argue the widely accepted belief that the French Revolution did more to challenge absolute monarchies and the divine right to rule than our revolution did (I cited Napoleon spreading revolutionary ideals across Europe as a by-product of his wars with the reactionary monarchs of Europe).
-I then reaffirm my stance that calling us the "leader of the Free World" is disengenuous (reinforcing Orkel's original point, and yours apparently, lol), all things considered.
Freedom is not binary and absolutely is a sliding scale; comparing freedom between countries is a full-time job for some people, my man. It isn't apple to oranges, it's one society/nation vs another society/nation, with the distinction between them being how free/not free the two are. It seems like you're disagreeing with me just to disagree with me/trying to create a rift between us on this issue where there isn't one. I assume because I irk you with my critique of the United States and/or my political ideology (which isn't FULL COMMUNISM by the way lol)? I want to see us do better as a nation, surely pointing out our country's flaws is a patriotic thing to do?
Yes, the United States has been more free than France (and other 'free societies') at some points in history, and less free at others, but the French Revolution was more radical and had a much bigger effect on spreading liberalism vs the comparitively conservative and isolationist American Revolution. Does that satisfy you?

You dramatically over-estimate the critical thinking skills of the average American. Most people aren't going to read past the "gotcha", and the administration knows this.

I don't think Americans are stupid. Most are just too busy dealing with long working days and issues in their own lives to think things through. And politicians capitalize on that.
