• Third Qantas plane to be turned back/make an unscheduled landing in 24 hours
A third Qantas flight has been forced to make an unscheduled landing because of non-safety-related issues. Qantas said flight QF7, en route to Dallas from Sydney, returned four hours after take-off due to a technical issue affecting seat power, the in-flight entertainment system and some toilets. It is the third Qantas flight to make an unscheduled landing in less than 24 hours.

On Monday afternoon a flight from Perth to Karratha was turned back after a strong odour was detected. The pilot of the 737 aircraft called for emergency landing protocols after smoke was detected in the cabin.

Earlier in the day another A380 jet, travelling from Dubai to Sydney, made an emergency landing in Perth after developing an air conditioning fault while flying over the Indian Ocean.
I'd imagine that the A380 landing at Perth would've sucked, terminal and runways aren't really designed to handle one. Bad day for Qantas though. Source
More like bad years for Qantas

It's more serious with toilets but if some still worked, I would still prefer having to hold in the piss a bit standing in line to having the whole thing canceled.

Explode B. Have it's engines suddenly shut off, or C. Have it's electrical system fail entirely, or worse! So, yeah. Be livid that their precautions are meant to save lives. Who cares if the jet suddenly crashes into a population centre?

It is very easy for a small failure on a plane to spiral out of control mid flight, especially over sea where there is little to no chance of landing safely. I would much rather be sitting in a terminal for a bit then be on Air Crash Investigation :v:
Airbus stocks have lost 1% today

This is A380, not some aged piece of shit built before anybody started caring about safety. I would be willing to take your point of the article itself specifically state "because of non-safety-related issues".

Planes are basically missiles packed with people, and when one thing goes wrong, no matter how small or isolated it is.. It warrants immediate action. Redundancies in place of course, akin to your point are what keeps the aircraft flying, but when the minor inconvenience doesn't have a readily explained cause... It's better safe than finding out that a short in the electrical system will soon start a fire in a wing, and then you end up not having a plane anymore. Mostly man, after all the recent airplane related cockups due to a slew of issues. We need the precautions. And my thoughts were more along the lines of an aged airframe lacking proper maintenance to prevent that small problem from being a big one. Edit:Also, not to go all conspiracy theorist, but since when has any company, let alone an airline who's just had a fuckload of problems, admit that their plane could've had life-threatening issues?
First stop the boats, now stop the planes.
More like bad years for Qantas
Au contraire.. Their projected mid financial year profit is ~350M AUD, compared to last years loss of 650M AUD.
the only reason they are making such a large profit after needing assistance from the government is because they are cutting corners wherever possible, including maintenance. goodbye flawless safety record

The small things lead to big problems later.
