Indiana to not recognize any same-sex marriages performed last month
The state of Indiana will not recognize the several hundred same-sex marriages that took place after a federal judge overturned Indiana's law, according to a memo issued by the chief counsel to Gov. Mike Pence.
Mark G. Ahearn, chief counsel, issued the memo Monday to all executive branches. It outlined the state's position since the federal court struck down Indiana's law forbidding gay marriages on June 25 and the federal appeals court's stay of that ruling on June 27.
The memo said Indiana's law against same-sex marriages "is in full force and effect and executive branch agencies are to execute their functions as though the U.S. District Court Order of June 25 had not been issued."
It also said the state will comply with the Court of Appeal's individual order recognizing the marriage of Amy Sandler and Niki Quasney.
Gay couples around the state rushed to county clerks' offices to get married during the three-day window before the ruling was stayed.
This is going to piss a lot of people off. And just as I thought Indiana was getting a bit more progressive, the angry Christian conservatives strike back.
On a personal note, my aunt and her girlfriend finally got married after almost a decade of being together just a few weeks ago and now the state won't even recognize it. What a punch to the gut.
the problem is is that Indiana CAN'T fail to recognize same-sex marriage, because the supreme court already ruled on it. They're basically just saying 'fuck you' to the US government, which is illegal.
This is beyond dangerous territory. The government usually lets states dictate most aspects of how everything's run, but when they say something's going to be done a certain way they mean it.
If the federal government doesn't come down with a swift kick in the balls for whoever made this happen it will set a horrible precedent.
Holy shit for the longest time I thought that said India, and was extremely confused about what the fuck the US supreme court had to do with it.
What the hell do they think they're doing? I wonder how far into the future we would have to go to not have such close minded people in power
we just have to wait until america isn't ran by rich white old people

Like how Colorado has marijuana legalized, while the federal doesn't.

I take solace in that.
Give it 10-15 more years, these dried up old shitcunts will be dead.

and get replaced by a different set of old people who'll seem like ass backwards old farts to the people who're kids today.
Can they even do this? Seriously? What's the point of any couple, straight or gay, to get married if the state can go "lol didn't matter" whenever they please.
So fucking stupid.
"To enforce this, all state officials will put fingers in their ears while shouting LA-LA-LA-LA-LA-LA-LA, to promptly and effectively ignore all same-sex marriages."

It's kinda silly letting states have control of something that affects one on a national level aswell; alas its constitutionally required

Hooray for stereotyping? You know there are plenty of poc/poor people that are against gay marriage too. And also rich old white people who support gay marriage exist too.
Shouldn't we have solved this sort of thing back in the Civil War, or do we need another one?

Its not a stereotype, nor to my knowledge meant to be taken seriously. its a stab at our country that has a unequal level of representation, it is a symbolic criticism of our country's culture and leadership. Our leaders need to be varied in sexuality, gender, race, opinions, and background. Many are not.
rich black people and rich hispanic people can also be homophobic....
And young people, and poor people. Really anyone can.

One problem, you'd have to combat the opposition breeding and passing down learned homophobia. How do you combat that with a minority that can't breed without involvement of the opposite sex in any way?
Yes, you guys can withdraw all that praise you were heaping on my state two weeks ago.
Asshole-in-Chief 2016 Wannabe Pence knows that Congress will never lift a finger for marriage equality, so he's comfortable telling the administration and the lower courts to go fuck themselves. Even if the Supreme threw out all marriage restrictions (unlikely with a conservative majority), Indiana and the other red states will simply dust off the old Jim Crow playbook. Can't directly discriminate? Whatever, we'll just indirectly discriminate, maybe by passing some "religious liberty" laws that allow the private sector to do our discriminating FOR us.
Why? Because this state is a bigoted redneck shithole stuck in the last century. :suicide:

I wouldn't mind federal soldiers taking over tbh.
My state government sucks asshole. If they want to give the "fuck you" treatment to the federal government and deny the citizens of this backwoods state their human rights, they can face the consequences.
You know what? States got up in arms and mad about the choices being made by the rest of the Union in the federation in relation to slaves and slave rights.
Indiana gets mad over gay marriage.
Fucking wot.

Sadly, I doubt the federal government has the backbone to enact those consequences a third time. At least not yet.
The important thing to remember is that the ruling is currently stayed, so when they say the original ban is still in effect they're completely right.
The marriages performed between the ruling and the stay are still recognised by the federal government, but not by the state for whatever reason (And that only applies while the ruling is stayed). Same thing has happened in other states as the article mentions.

As if Britain and the rest of Europe isn't? And as if race really mattered?
Like how Colorado has marijuana legalized, while the federal doesn't.
There's a big difference here. Something like marijuana is handled differently. If it's illegal on the federal level but not the state level that simply means state, county, and city police officers won't enforce those laws while federal officers still can enforce them. (Though they typically don't without having something worse they're already going after someone for.) In the case of gay marriage the gay marriage ban was outright struck down by the Supreme Court meaning that on the state level it MUST be recognized.
