Compare a human to Mount Everest. Now compare Mount Everest's size to Earth's. See how large Earth is in comparison to everything we know. Now compare Earth to the Sun. The sun is, to most minds, of unimaginable scale. Think of how long it would take, traveling even at super sonic speeds, to travel even the diameter of the sun. Compare the diameter of the sun to the diameter of our solar system. Compare that to the distance from one end of our solar neighborhood to the other. Try to find our solar system in each of the images. So now we seem pretty insignificant compared to the size of our super-cluster. Going even further now, look at how small our super-cluster is. That's our known universe. There is so much more to discover and so many possibilities of new fuel sources, land for residence, minerals, etc. P.S. We need a name for our solar system because it gets a bit confusing when the word "solar system" is tossed around because sometimes it is hard to distinguish the term-a Cosmo with satellites orbiting it, or the place-the sun's system. This is the part where I get into the political shit. It is really pissing me off that the common person is more interested in who Brad Pitt is going out with now or how Lady Gaga looks like a slut. People care about the most stupid shit. Now I'm sure this will never happen in my lifetime but the countries of the world need to stop bothering each-other and work together. (I'm not a hippie, I couldn't care less about peace, but I couldn't care more about scientific co-operation.) The UN has almost done this and there are no major conflicts going on right now so we're almost there. The UN and rest of the world need to focus on space. Our planet is becoming over-populated and a mass-murder would most likely never happen considering that means that a small group of "survivors" needs to destroy a large group of "expendables", and the large group would end up destroying the small one. We're running out of fuels, and writing all this hippie shit is making me sick to my stomach. We are running out of resources on this planet and eventually it will become a dead planet. I am no fan of doomsday theories but I do know that our world will end eventually. It is in the best interest of the human race to begin significant spacial research until we eventually find another Earth-like planet. The nearest suspected Earth-like planet is extremely far (can't remember and I don't want to look up source) and this will probably take us, pessimistically thinking, a thousand years to get the correct technology to travel there, let alone slightly terraform/colonize the place. Again, I am no fan of doomsday theories but we must eventually find another Earth. Why can't the world be focused on space like it used to from the 50s to the 70s? Space, in my opinion, is one of the most important studies and we need to focus on better rockets, heat shields, cameras, etc. I believe that astronauts are unnecessary and make things too complicated and expensive. They are basically riding on a space probe, but with life-support systems and the astronauts are just extra cargo and possible casualties. Yes it is a hard fact as almost any one would love to go to space (anyone not celebrity-oriented that is), but probes can accomplish so much more. Probes do not require costly life support systems, they can remain in space for years and not die as humans would, they can land in areas inhabitable (i.e. Mercury), they can still collect samples from the planets, etc. (Sorry if my arguments aren't very well thought out, it was just a spur of the moment thing and I'm pretty tired.) We must explore space, there are too many possibilities and resources out there that we cannot reach. tl;dr I say how small we are compared to the universe. Then I start to rant on how society is extremely stupid and how we need to start focusing on space much more. WOAH SHIT, those images are alot bigger than I expected, I really don't want to photoshop or anything because I want to get to bed soon, is there just a way where I can rescale them?
Space is simply an illusion, what we see when we look at the night sky is simply an image of the past. It's really quite mind boggling.
You say that astronauts are too expensive but surely removing them takes away the interest from the public. Look at how famous the first moon landings were- people were buying TV sets just to watch them.
There is soooo much we should focus on: Space, science, art,... That's why society is stupid, because it's easier to fap at lady gaga rather than making art. On a side note, space is fucking awsome. I want to buy an amateur telescope.

And no, man must not explose space. Look what he did with this planet, you want to bring the mess to other world? :v: Meine Automerge ist kaputt.

Another point as to why we're all screwed. People who don't realize this are the ones that are going to ultimately doom us; somehow. They'll find a way. Also the sun is tiny as hell compared to most stars. :aaa:
And no, man must not explose space. Look what he did with this planet, you want to bring the mess to other world? :v: Meine Automerge ist kaputt.
Oh god I hope you're being sarcastic...
You say that astronauts are too expensive but surely removing them takes away the interest from the public. Don't expect your news to tell you a giant meteor is going to hit earth either or the sun has farted alittle too much and the radiation will affect us. The world could enter WW3 tomorrow and the TV networks would play reality shows because its more important... Kinda make you wonder what we have become. DO we even care anymore. That brings me back to the quoted post, People buy TV's to watch that garbage, not to watch the news or something educational. The big question is are we alone in the universe? Well considering the info OP posted its highly unlikely we are the only intelligent life here... It's a matter of distance to find it which is ungodly great. On a universal standpoint humans, earth, the Solar system is insignificant. We are just one planet blasting radio waves of every facet of our lives into the cosmic background. Kinda like a baby crying at a metal concert, no one hears us unless they happen to get close enough to hear us...

When I do, even if it is the most important discovery in the last decade, the reporter tells the story for less than 30 seconds, a few people (maybe) go ooooooooooo and then it's on to the next story. As far as E.T.s go, in this thread I am trying to be factual, but god I can't help but state this. If E.T.s ever find us war will come. The E.T.s may want our land/resources/whatever. If they don't kill us then we will try to start communicating. Who knows we might start a war with them because they are different or have differing opinions (sounds dumb but look at modern wars between countries) Say they are friendly and we're cool with them. If they are ever attacked by hostile aliens we will more than likely try to help them out, as America would if Israel is attacked (oh wait). Now to take a more Star Trekish approach on this. Say the aliens are part of a society which is basically the UN in space and they want us to join. We say no, they get pissed, call us heretics or whatever, and start a war. We say yes, and most likely that space UN is going to have enemies (every large group does). Then we'll be obligated to fight those enemies. So basically anything can result from E.T.s but inevitably it will lead to war. Hopefully we get more technology and benefits than we do casualties.
The news today is not intended to inform as such but rather to retell events that could potentially affect us as people. The news that scientists have discovered a new galaxy or a new element is, although interesting to a section of the public, not suitable for the news. These events are recorded in documentaries and shown on channels like Discovery, Nat Geo etc.
Even then those channels pick the most "interesting" stories so the average person will watch them.
Correct. But in fairness most people are not interested in yet another rocket launch or just another element being found, not to mention the incredible task of making a sixty minute documentary out of it.
Even then those channels pick the most "interesting" stories so the average person will watch them.
And even still unless you have satellite or digital cable or know the channel its on...Most people know News, Sports, and Music videos and reality shows. They dont just hop on discovery channel unless they happen to mis enter a channel number or something As for ETs. Its like I say. Why come earth? According to out broadcast we are a violent species here. always at war with each other.. That would be like me taking a vacation to Iraq... But if they did come I don't think they would start a war knowing we didnt stand a chance. Think on an advances brain pan here. they can travel across the galaxy why would they want to pick on earthlings? Weather the aliens are good or evil we will not know either, truth be told we would join any side that comes first if given the chance.
Space is the future of mankind.

I don't understand why people aren't fascinated by new elements. People just slap the BORING stamp onto anything scientific because they have no idea what it is about because they are so fucking stupid and celebrity oriented. What is not interesting about taking the smallest fathomable piece of material and accelerating it to the point it collapses and becomes something entirely new that the world has never seen. It's like inventing a new color... I also don't understand why no one cares about space. Seriously, my dad worked at JPL and was going through some old stuff and he came across some mission reports and JPL news magazines. I am going to assume I am one of the few hundred individuals who have read it and not worked at JPL. As for E.T.s again, it's not about our planet, it's about our resources. To us oxygen may not be a significant resource, but who knows? The E.T.s could've been based off of oxygen powered cars and whatnot. Then they come to our planet and find this jackpot. Of course this is all speculation but my point is is that E.T.s wouldn't start shit for no reason, they'd start shit for our resources/territory.
Space
The final frontier These are the voyagers of the starship Enterprise Its continuing mission: to explore strange new worlds To seek out new life, and new civilizations To boldly go where no one has gone before
Many people choose to ignore/not think about space because it makes them feel insignificant.
Most likely right on the money there. Again, hate the world population. Anyway, enough of my anti-social views, let's talk space. Any interesting facts about the space program, its future, or even space itself?
Many people choose to ignore/not think about space because it makes them feel insignificant.
It should But people preoccupy themselves to avoid coming to this realization because it scares them.
Everything is an illusion. Matter does not exist. [editline]12:37AM[/editline] We are living in the Matrix.
What he said was actually true though. The light does reach us for such a long time that we are literally seeing the past.

Where is the .gif with the VY Canis Majoris? Then you will feel insignificant.
Antares is a really cool star. Rigel is pretty interesting. But Altair is my favorite (probably because of the book Space by James Michener, not to mention Assassin's Creed)
Dude, best ninja ever.
Also, while we're still on the subject of how insignificant we are.
