article: http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/sns-rt-us-korea-north-nuclearbre8as0ot-20121129,0,7090632.story North Korea has made further progress in the construction of a new atomic reactor, the U.N. nuclear chief reported on Thursday, a facility that may extend the country's capacity to produce material for nuclear bombs. Pyongyang "has continued construction of the light water reactor and largely completed work on the exterior of the main buildings," Yukiya Amano, director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), said. But, he told the IAEA's 35-nation governing board that the U.N. agency "remains unable to determine the reactor's design features or the likely date for its commissioning." North Korea says it needs nuclear power to provide electricity, but has also boasted of its nuclear deterrence capability and has traded nuclear technology with Syria, Libya and probably Pakistan. The light-water reactor is being built at the North's main Yongbyon nuclear facility, which consists of a five-megawatt reactor, a fuel fabrication facility and a plutonium reprocessing plant where weapons-grade material has been extracted from spent fuel rods. North Korea was the first country to withdraw from the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty in 2003 and has denied IAEA access to its atomic sites, reneging on a February deal to do so after it announced plans to launch a long-range rocket, in defiance of United Nations Security Council resolutions. It was believed earlier this year to be pushing ahead with plans for a third nuclear test. Amano said he remained "seriously concerned" about the North's nuclear program, which his inspectors can only monitor via satellite images.
They need to stop making those nukes. One of these days, it's gonna blow on them. And poor leader is going to be an irradiated ghoul.
Yep it's true, We don't need anymore nuclear bombs in this world, just help each other out, The aliens are probably watching you right now thinking there plan to take over earth is viable.
NK could use a new government. Like right fucking now.
Misread the title. Was confused [img_thumb]http://assets.inhabitat.com/wp-content/blogs.dir/1/files/2011/11/ikea-blink-san-diego-537x311.jpg[/img_thumb] Anyways, this looks fun, especially the "boasted nuclear deterrence" part.
-Snip- Fuck you above me!
Can't wait to see pictures of Kim Jong Un inspecting it.
"We're going to build new nuclear reactor to provide us more electricity" Five-megawatt reactor!!! they're damn bad liars, nuclear reactors which are meant to make electricity are at min 2000 megawatts and electricity output is atleast 600 MW.
I'll bet someone 20 dollars of steam gifts that they have China syndrome within the first year.
I'll bet someone 20 dollars of steam gifts that they have China syndrome within the first year.
What is china syndrome?
I'll bet someone 20 dollars of steam gifts that they have China syndrome within the first year.
Are we talking about the nationalist mother fuckers, or are we talking about the real China?
What is china syndrome?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/China_Syndrome_(nuclear_meltdown)#China_Syndrome tl;dr, reactor goes on a meltdown, becomes so hot it starts to melt through the earth's crust until it hits the mantle and is destroyed. (i.e. it digs to china)
Building a 5 megawatt reactor (not to mention fuel fabrication and plutonium reprocessing facilities) for producing electricity is ridiculously inefficient solution. All the control systems, reactors and turbines alone are expensive to build for just 5mw, For comparison, a single reactor being built in finland will produce 1600mw (and will probably be increased by 10-30% within a few decades like what happened with the previous reactors).
I'll bet someone 20 dollars of steam gifts that they have China syndrome within the first year.
Wern't they previously running a reactor with no known incidents?
They can't afford uranium, so they will be using pixie sticks and root beer.
Okay, to clarify my bet. China syndrome is when a nuclear reactor goes Chernobyl
I'm not so concerned about what they'll do with it, as much as I am concerned about it melting down.
They can't afford uranium, so they will be using pixie sticks and root beer.
You realize they're a dictatorship? "Can't afford" means nothing, its free for them.

Amen
Can't wait to see pictures of Kim Jong Un inspecting it.
you mean the photo shopped images?
I'm not so concerned about what they'll do with it, as much as I am concerned about it melting down.
5MW reactor is so small that they can barely even contaminate themshelves. [editline]30th November 2012[/editline] There have been many meltdowns on tiny reactors in 50s and 60s.
And poor leader is going to be an irradiated ghoul.
"Haro smoothskins"
You realize they're a dictatorship? "Can't afford" means nothing, its free for them.
So explain how they have such shortages of basic supplies like food then?
So explain how they have such shortages of basic supplies like food then?
The whole juche self-reliance ideology thing that's failing horribly due to shitty economy and natural disasters, but they still cling to it because Dear Leader say so.
The whole juche self-reliance ideology thing that's failing horribly due to shitty economy and natural disasters, but they still cling to it because Dear Leader say so.
That doesn't explain how being a dictatorship magically negates the costs of obtaining things.

There is a difference between milliwatt (mW) and megawatt (MW). :v:
That doesn't explain how being a dictatorship magically negates the costs of obtaining things.
They don't need to pay their own workers to make things, for one; nor pay whoever gets the materials. Anything from outside NK, and they have to spend their very limited forex reserves, as Nork currency is worth about as much as the Zimbabwean dollar these days.
