40,000 people Sign Petition to Remove "Beach Body Ready" advert
More than 40,000 people have signed a petition calling for the removal of an advertisement which asks "Are you beach body ready?"
The Protein World advert, which appears in London Underground stations, features a model in a bikini and is advertising the brand's weight loss collection.
The change.org petition, which has more than 43,000 signatures, says: "Protein World is directly targeting individuals, aiming to make them feel physically inferior to the unrealistic body image of the bronzed model, in order to sell their product.
Katie Hopkins, who has been outspoken about weight in the past, tweeted: "Chubsters, quit vandalising Protein World ads and get your arse running on the road. Feminism isn't an excuse for being fat. Eat less move more."
But on social media, the company’s Twitter account has been less understanding, telling one woman:
“why make your insecurities our problem?”
She added: "Ads for 'beach body ready' vandalised. Society has huge acceptance for being fat - but masses of abuse for being skinny."
Could a mod remove the quotations from "thin privilege" please, didn't mean to have them there.
[editline]27th April 2015[/editline]
And fix the broken quote within a quote too <3
But "thin privilege" should always be put in mocking quotes.
I guess signing a petition is easier than actually losing weight.
Tbh I would ban the ads just because they market supplemental weightloss aid and indeed plays at the quite complicated issues people have with their self image.
It's not "YO, SUMMER IS COMING, CONSIDER GOING OUT, EXERCISING A BIT, WATCHING WHAT YOU EAT, YOU GONNA LOOK AND FEEL GREAT". It's "we have the stuff that gonna make you look great" which is firstly mostly likely largely a lie and secondly it's hugely what causes problems like anorexia and bulimia in kids.
This "X privilege" shit has gotten way out of hand.
Considering anyone can obtain "thin privilege" by not eating like a glutton I don't know how anyone can take this shit seriously.

You see, it didn't really. Neither of the articles linked in the OP nor the petition itself contain a single instance of the words "thin" nor "privilege" but our wonderful ZombieDawgs who had the honor to create this thread felt the need to add the catchphrase into the title, well aware it's going to add controversy and stir up shit.
i really think katie hopkins must have had a terrible childhood or something. you can't be that mean and lacking in any empathy or understanding for others without there being something that scarred you when you were younger. i hope she's able to work out whatever problems she has inside herself.
i think a better solution instead of removal would be an are you beach body ready poster with a small lady and large lady side by side looking happy. summer is a great time and no one should feel like they can't bathe in the sun.
all bodies are beach bodies.

i think the privilege stuff is great.
it's opened up so much dialogue on the internet about societal values and how it affects us and how we affect it. i can get how it could be seen as overwhelming at times but i find it so damn super duper awesome that so many people are actively participating in discussions on the different cultural issues that affect them. it is really allowing us to develop better understanding on all the different and awesome subsets of people in at home and abroad. it's kickin' rad!
40,000 people should stop eating all the pies.

I think it's done way more harm than good. I know I personally can't hear someone talk about "X privilege" without rolling my eyes and I know I'm not alone. I'm a very tolerant person, I don't care if someone's fat or gay or anything, but in my opinion the types of people who would rather point out the "privileges" of others are insufferable and usually unwilling to accept and act on their own shortcomings.
In the context of this ad, I just don't like it because it's selling detrimental, snake-oil-like shit to people. Supplements to not make you lose weight. Smarter dieting and a healthy regimen of exercise does.

More like she's found that she can make more money by sitting on her arse and posting inflammatory stuff on twitter than she ever could working a proper job.

That's lame. I'm going to use my "mod privilege" now to change that.

Anyone who would ever buy their protein powder or whatever they sell is just gonna agree with them.
It's not like the landwhales signing this petition are ever going to buy their products so it's not exactly any business lost to them, I think they might keep their jobs, maybe even see an increase in revenue with all the attention this is getting.

naw i think it's kinda cute that some people are getting real into that stuff. like i personally don't find it annoying cos i think it's interesting but i guess you just gotta understand that the good majority of the people you're talking about are young people just starting to know the world and wanna change it for what they see as the better.
now when you say "accept and act on their own shortcomings". do you mean the, "eh why don't you just lose weight fattie!!" type of thing? cos that type of thinking is sorta what the fat acceptance movement means when they talk about fatphobia ya know. like, these people should be allowed to point out that our societies have some really uncool judgments ingrained in them and try to change that without people just blowing them off as people who just need to not be fat.
like, it's kinda like they're saying, "hey guys maybe we shouldn't be so harsh to fat people and here's some ways we could help make society more inclusive and joyful where people can work on themselves not because of societal pressure but because of true and honest personal desire"
and getting "fuck off fatty" as a response. like, that thinking and response sorta justifies their arguments more, no?

this also makes me feel inferior
I want McDonald's commercials to be banned from TV.
Fat people don't understand what it's like to see these commercials, knowing you can't enjoy fastfood because you end up ruining your natural look.
Check your fat privilege.

that sort of "haha zinged ya!" stuff doesn't really work cos in most mass media fat people don't have as much power as thin people due to all the years of hollywoodian beauty standards and what not so they aint really got a privilege in pop media like mcdonalds ads.
i really wanna be able to explain this better, but it's late and my brain's not working too good (please no one zing me quoting that and then saying something like "heh you don't say?").
So yeah i'll read up on more stuff after sleep and try to figure out how i can better articulate my point but i hope you kinda get the gist, it's algoods if not i did a pretty poor job.

I want fat people in McDonalds ads eating side salads.
You guys are going to hate me for saying this, but I feel like this protesting against this add is totally uncalled for an unnecessary.
Like, you're allowed to feel uncomfortable due to the add, but instead of bitching about it, get in shape and get healthy. Simple solution
Why do these fools believe that everyone should think it's alright to be fat anyway? They always act like there's nothing wrong with obesity - and that's an entirely detrimental state of mind. Aside from the fact that it's extremely unhealthy, I can't stand the way they act like having a negative opinion on obesity puts you at the same level as racists, sexists, and shit like that. People generally don't find obesity attractive, because it's not fucking attractive, so if you're fat and have a problem with the way you look, try changing it instead of fucking trying to change everybody else's mind about it. I mean, I'm pretty fat right now, but come on dude, that's my fucking fault and I'm not gonna act like I'm physically / aesthetically equal to those in better shape.

This. People need to stop glorifying obesity. It's not healthy
I don't think this campaign was glorifying obesity, more pointing out that shaming people for their bodily appearance in general should not be used for advertisements I mean these two women aren't exactly obese

but you are aesthetically equal. god dang. don't put yourself down like that man.
beauty is in the eye of the beholder, there's no objective measurement of it. it's largely decided by cultural environments what we find appealing.
and it is alright to be fat! if you're fat and you wanna stay fat then that's good! people should be comfortable with how they are in the present moment. and if you're fat and you don't want to be fat then that's good as well!
these movements are about helping large people be more comfortable with who they are so that depression and anxiety (both things linked to eating disorders) don't fuck them up entirely.
It is incredibly stupid and unkind to just say that, these people cos the majority of society considers them unattractive, have to change themselves or else face abuse, media exclusion and social isolation.

imho the one on the right is pretty fit
could take a wee bit of muscle but definitely no need to go lighter
This. People need to stop glorifying obesity. It's not healthy
I think reason for that is that they are simply jumping on a bandwagon. There are fuckton of obscure excuses and oversensetive reactions that suddenly "must be respected as a right" due to social media attention, fueling similar incidents and oversensationalist aproach.
No, something that is a direct threat to person's health will not be justified as his right in a society that is based upon idea of preserving life of it's people. You want to kill yourself slowly, well then, don't expect a pat on your back.
Now get out of that damn fursuit before ya suffocate. Or i'll save you myself.
This. People need to stop glorifying obesity. It's not healthy
it's not glorifying it's about a large (hehe pun) portion of people being treated equally and not fucked over by dumb ass standards of beauty propagated by industries and media
This. People need to stop glorifying obesity. It's not healthy
That's like saying that people who show discontent with case of police brutality glorify thug life and murder of police.

I think we are talking here about slightly opposite - fat people screaming that it's their right to be extremely fat and screaming against healthy body proposal as if they say, "And if you don't you go to hell".
There are many slightly obese people who are nice and rational and everybody is okay with that.
Chubby people are ok, have you seen Sumo?
