so they spoiled the entire story in the trailer gg
visually it does look pretty okay though, might watch it on a streaming site a year after release
Scarlett Johansson still should not be the Major.

Isn't the story like 25 years old though? I mean it's still a bad trailer but it's not like anything is spoiled for the actual fans. There are way worse cases of spoilers in trailers.
-snip- nevermind

The new movie isn't that close to the original from the looks of things
I was going to say, it's nice that they recreated the scene where the Major strips down and jumps down the tower while cloaking and then show a comparison of the two, but I can't find that scene from the first movie at all somehow. Also something about the nipple-less body is unnerving.
The shelling scene looks weird too.

she kinda just looks fat in the naked suit
Why does the shelling clip look way more visually impressive in the anime? What, you're telling me they couldn't have made it bright and colourful and kinda alien?
i dont see that it really matters, the batou character looks stupid though
Her way of acting doesn't fit the character at all.
Also yada yada whitewashing argument people throw around but that doesn't matter to me.
But elaborating on the not fitting the character, she always has that "doe in the headlights" look.
The Major never has that look.
She also seems super disinterested in everything I've seen her in.

Everything looks more visually impressive in the anime, there's more color despite it being super existential.
This is the only bit of color I saw in the trailers, and that's because it's daytime.

Just because it's nighttime doesn't mean it's pitch black everywhere.

I wouldn't say that just yet.
Give it a chance because trailers can often be deceiving because they're unfinished or poorly done.
[editline]13th February 2017[/editline]
I hope they work(ed) on the body CGI though, I just realized why it looked so weird.
It has that weird CGI issue that a lot of human-like things have where it just looks out of place, of course they could be going for that with the Major's body being fake and all.
They're taking the RoboCop angle from it and throwing in the Puppet Master.
Still more/less a retread of the first movie.

I'll give it a chance when a majority of reviews start popping up to say otherwise. Until then I'll keep calling em as I see em.
looks like a pretty cool action movie.
dont care about anime in any way shape or form so whether its autistically accurate or not doesnt really matter to me, looks good enough on its own.
Its a complete waste of the source material with a plot that appears to be about as deep as a puddle.
As far as I can tell purely from trailers, it seems to be a mix of GitS and Gits2: Innocence with the Puppet Master thrown in for good measure.

i will only be happy if there are Tachikoma in this
i will only be happy if there are Tachikoma in this
there wont. the only tachikoma you'll see is the one in the final battle. and from the looks of things, they will do take cues from the action scenes but not of the plot.
it is however worth nothing that it is an adaptation of a the film, a film wich was aimed at a completely different audience in a completely different period of time, to an even different culture. while johanson as the major doesnt really seem to me a major(heh) dealbreaker as most people want it to be(for whatever reasons they chose it to be) I still have high hopes for it to be a great material.
it is sad though that most of the live adaptations we have seen in the past years fail to grasp the concept of what an adaptation implies and merely resort to do a remake with extra steps purely to justify budgets and reharses. while GiTS is highly praised for its visuals and animation, the entire "2deep4u" element is handled in extremely low quantities and/or subtle hints here and there, only for you to decide to dive in or not - something american writters can't even get a hold of.
films like robocop (the original) presented the whole debacle about what little humanity can one find in a tincan with waxed lips in a way that, while not being a lecture on budism, can be analized and studied outside the teather. it is done that way so you can decide how much you want to read into it without losing your time because you have to read between lines while they shoot at each other.
tl;dr: as long as GiTS stays the fuck away from whatever the fuck writters have done with adaptations in the last ten years, we'll be fine. it might not the the original, but that is the fucking point.
I'm not sure how you can say that from the trailers alone, especially when it's clear they are adapting iconic scenes and not merely using the name of the anime to do god knows what.
As I said previously, adaptions are hard and making a 1-to-1 copy, not only is unrealistic, it would also probably feel weird.
For some reason, there's a lot of negativity and while I understand the skepticism, nothing on these trailers seem that bad and most of the critics are either nitpicks (palette of colors) or assumptions about the end-product.
I hope I'm right about being half-decent because I would like anime to be taken more seriously and this could introduce the medium to a lot of people.
I mean yeah its already a pain in the butt adapting any anime into live action.
But for GiTS you have to go the extra mile in terms of intelligent and interesting writing/themes. Else you end up like GiTS Arise that just seems like a bland near future with no interesting story hooks/themes/philosophy like the original movies or SAC.
I hate to say that, but GiTS already set a high bar for itself as a franchise.

I really hope you are right, and we end up with an interesting exploration into consciousness, memory and identity like we got with the original film. But... I think we both know that isn't likely to happen here.
As far as I can tell purely from trailers, it seems to be a mix of GitS and Gits2: Innocence with the Puppet Master thrown in for good measure.
They said the antagonist is Kuze, which makes no fucking sense.
They quite literally just shoveled in as many references both visual and narrative and tried to string a story together while ruining the most core aspects of the series and Major's character specifically.

We can say this if we've been fed info from the producers and director showing they just cherry picked iconography and plot elements, then wrote their own plot out of those elements.
It doesn't have the Major's identity crisis, antagonist is just a mash of every villain in the series, Section 9 seemingly manipulated Major from birth.
We can dig what depth it goes into on release but as it stands, they've focused way too hard on the visuals and thrown together a plot that conveniently recreates key scenes from the film/series.

i think they missed the point when they heard that Motoko was a cyborg so they got an actual cyborg to play her role
I really don't want to be pessimistic, but it's hard not to be when every piece of new information indicates that this will be a big dumb action movie that completely misses the point of ghost in the shell
People here are acting like they're going to Uwe Boll it and use the source for 5% of the movie and then go off on a totally retarded tangent like make a zombie romance film or something stupid
[editline]13th February 2017[/editline]
of/c I'm being a shit and exaggerating, but wait and see, Jesus
A straight adaptation of GitS would tank in the US, I'm more than happy to let them make an action reboot that can be commercially successful while still making people aware of the source material. This is the most viable anime property (outside of Death Note) to market in the West, so it is vital this does well if we're going to see any other adaptations in the future.

you never know. im more of the opinion that if you make something amazing and advertise it well people will come.

I personally love the original movie but American audiences would not be able to sit through it.
is also very odd for it to be aiming for a pg-13 rating considering the source material.... it's kinda funny that they're actually babying it down from anime.
