Lacey: On Thursday evening last, about 10 o'clock, while the steamer was abreast of Island 16, at Booth's Point, and 125 miles below Cairo, a fire was discovered by the watch on the forward deck. The alarm was immediately given, and Captain TAYLOR, the commander of the boat, with others, immediately rushed to the spot, and found an open bale of hay in flames. Every effort was made to throw it overboard, but the flames spread so rapidly, and communicated to the other bales in the vicinity, that their efforts proved fruitless. The alarm was then given, and attempts were made by the officers to get the crew together, and thus endeavor to save the passengers. But they refused to do anything except to secure their own safety. By this time the alarm had spread over the boat, and men, women and children were running in every direction, uttering the most frantic cries. All became confusion, and a general rush was made to the rear of the boat, where parties threw themselves into the river, many of whom were drowned. Not a single dollar in money, or a single article of clothing, save that worn by the parties who were up at the time, was saved, most of the passengers having jumped overboard in their night clothes. The steamer Magnolia, which was also en route for New-orleans, came up in about an hour after the accident, and laid by the wreck until morning. Her officers took all the sufferers on board, furnishing them with food and such clothing as was wanted, and giving a free passage to all who were bound for New-Orleans. A large number of the deck passengers threw themselves overboard, and many were drowned. One German most inhumanly left his two young children in their beds to be consumed by the fire while he made good his escape to shore.[/release] If one of my family members was on that boat, I'd be steamed. [editline]11:30PM[/editline] FUCK ME, didn't notice the date. Can a mod close this?
to be honest, I was expecting a 200 year old article
[QUOTE=Triumph Forks;21786664]to be honest, I was expecting a 200 year old article[/QUOTE] Sorry for being 50 years too un-late.
