Recounting the story of how they went from 4GB to 8GB, Adam was actually at Gearbox (Borderlands), with Randy Pitchford, President of Gearbox, telling him, “If you go with 4GB of GDDR5, you are done.” Following that statement, Boyes says that the entire room of about 30 people added in that “you guys, you never listen, you’ve never been good at this stuff.”
After hearing this, Adam says he had a mini-breakdown, and it wasn’t until he reflected on this and asked himself the question, “Are we going to be the best console in every single category?” before things started moving, because “the answer used to be no.”
So, Adam went back to the developers about the possibility of doing 8GB of RAM, getting responses like “that would be incredible.” He then took all the feedback to Tokyo, got the thumbs up, and the rest is history.
someone else really did it and Randy is just taking credit
as per Gearbox tradition

except randy is being given the credit by this adam fellow in the article?
I'm sure it wasn't just because 1 developer asked for it, I'm sure more than Gearbox wanted 8.

adam is really randy
it's all a trick
They sure didn't want to take credit for Aliens

He'll never live that down
He'll never live that down
With good reason too.
With good reason too.
Exactly.
They pulled the ol' switcharoo on us, and you can look at their actions in hindsight and see that they knew what was about to happen, so they prevented reviews and avoided Demos and so on and so forth until they had everyone's money, THEN went Oh, Yeah, And it isn't the game you thought, Oh well thanks!
does this mean it is ok for me to like gearbox again?
I'd love to see a news report every time a PC user thinks twice and decides to double their ram instead. "My friend Tim was going to go with only 4gb of ram, but I told him to use 8gb and he did. He uses Photoshop a lot you see. I saved the day."
And to be honest, I'm absolutely amazed that 8gb wasn't a basic requirement from this generation of consoles. Given just how restrictive things were for the last gen, it seems like going slightly 'overboard' on something like this would be a smarter move. The relatively small cost in making this upgrade versus the potential return from better sales and a longer lifespan of the device as a result seems worth it to me.

4GB of RAM is fine for a majority of PC applications, including gaming. I don't really see what they could possibly use all that RAM for on consoles.
This reminds me of how Epic got Microsoft to put 512mb of RAM in the 360 way back when.

Well initially it may not seem like they can put full use into it.
But just think about what console games evolve into, in a few years devs will access the full 8gb of ram and games will be fucking amazing compared to what we saw at e3.

The hardware is supposed to last a decade..
I'm still not forgiving them for ACM

It is about sustainability, this console will be around for a good bit, few years or more and computer hardware moves really quick onward, it would be seen as obsolete having 4 gigs as it's with 2 gigs now.

developers are creative people, if you give them a resource, they will use it. Since all PS4's are the same, developers will not need to worry how much ram they need to use. Developers never like to leave resources they know they can use or waste unused.

you have severely short termed thinking
Also everyone in this thread is forgetting it is 8 GB total RAM. Many gaming PCs have 8 GB RAM + more VRAM. My machine has a 2 GB card for instance.

yeah but computers don't get optimization treatment like consoles.

And here we are with so many gigabytes

Cliffy B did the exact same thing for the 360. Originally it was going to have 256mb of RAM. PR douches save the day. I hope this is something that continues to happen.

Isn't this banable offense?

You are the cancer of the industry.

I will just make my day better by taking that as a joke - haha, that was a good one, man.
1981: "640K ought to be enough for anybody." - Bill Gates.
FTFY, 640k was the amount of conventional memory all PC's came with.
I might be thinking of space then, my mistake.
