Sony has announced a more powerful version of its PlayStation 4 console at an event in New York.
The PS4 Pro will be able to render games with ultra-high definition 4K graphics, sharper than 1080p HD.
A cosmetically redesigned, slimmer PlayStation 4 was also announced and will be sold at a cheaper price.
One analyst said releasing an upgraded console so soon after the PS4's debut in 2013 took the company into "unchartered territory".
Sony typically makes cosmetic changes to the PlayStation between major releases, but this will be the first time it will have two consoles on sale with significantly different graphics capabilities within the same generation.
"We realised that for the very highly-discriminating gamer there is always a desire for advancement, and they want it in this generation," said Sony's Andrew House.
Games displayed in 4K have four times as many pixels in each frame as 1080p HD images, making them look crisper on a compatible television.
Since rendering 4K requires more computing power than HD, Sony said the PS4 Pro would have more than double the graphics processing power of the PS4.
The PS4 was released less than three years ago, alongside rival Microsoft's Xbox One.
Microsoft has already released a slimmer iteration of the Xbox One that can play 4K videos, but it cannot render ultra-high definition games.
However, it is developing a forthcoming console, dubbed Project Scorpio, that will support virtual reality and 4K games.
whats the point of having prettier games that play like shit?
i saw the stream, all they flaunted was "4k this, 4k that". apparently having tighter sharper graphics that's indistinguishable on most of our potato TVs is the new big thing.
For 100 cashbux more, allowing the console to actually handle 4k seems like a reasonable price point. I do wonder how this will impact the performance of previous titles on the PS4. A fair few probably have hard frame rate caps, but those that don't might behave entertainingly.
i like how they didnt mention at all during the stream that if you have a screen below 4k it wont give any framerate improvements. Only the fact that it will upgrade some ps4 games to 4k
Though as per usual, the EU and UK pricing doesn't match up with the US.
One day we'll stop getting screwed. One day.
Apparently it doesn't run Ultra HD Blu-Rays. Only 4K video via streaming and apps.

Oh wow. Seriously?

So it's pretty much Sony's Project Scorpio in that it's only intended for 4k Gaming, and otherwise it's absolutely pointless.
This isn't a generation upgrade. This is a fucking pricey stopgap for people with expensive TVs who hate resolution artifacts from 1080p.
I wish the front of the PS4 actually had any indication what the touch sensors do instead of having no markings.

They do have markers.

Hear me out 399 euro is not 399 USD, stop this please.

eh, I might get a used one on the left for God of War 4
i own a 4k tv and watching breaking bad in full 4k via netflix was an incredible experience that was seriously mindblowingly gorgeous but tbh whenever we've hdmi'd a pc to the tv and played games at full 4k it's not actually that noticeable of a difference compared to 1080 on the 40 inch screen, even with all upscaling disabled.
maybe it's just me but 4k console gaming seems like a silly concept, video games move too quickly and are mostly made up of models and textures that scale up pretty nicely from 1080 to 4k. i really don't think the difference is gonna justify the hardware power these games are gona require to render them "smoothly" (30 fps), but i guess it would be silly not to move forwards.. i just hope this doesn't become an excuse for harsh framerate caps because "IT'S GOT GREAT GRAPHICS WHO CARES IF ITS LOCKED AT 24 FPS!!"

Holy shit, I didn't know that. Maybe it's worn off of the family PS4.

This is from the official german playstation twitter (https://twitter.com/PlayStationDE/status/773608221613428737)
"Wer kein 4K hat kann sich trotzdem über stabile Framerates bei 1080p für ALLE #PS4 Games freuen!"
Translated: Those who don't have 4k can still be excited for stable framerates at 1080p for ALL PS4 games!

jesus you need a magnifying glass to spot that

However, wouldn't it still improve the graphical fidelity, even on a normal screen?
So there's no reason to get this if my tv is 1080p?
probably better game performance since even though it would push 1080p to your 1080p TV, the graphics card won't be as busy compared to pushing 4K.
However, wouldn't it still improve the graphical fidelity, even on a normal screen?
No? You can't get 4k on a non-4k monitor, it's still going to be 1080p
the games aren't even 4K, just upscaled with post processing, the post processing is probably going to take up most of the extra GPU upgrade power too, unfortunately
they're so afraid of doing the 599 USD thing again that they dropped the ball here

You will get more detail and extra AA.
Same thing happens on PC with VSR.

oh well if it's upscaling then downscaling an upscaled image won't provide a benefit.
No? You can't get 4k on a non-4k monitor, it's still going to be 1080p
You could however take advantage of supersampling. Run the game at like twice the resolution, downscale it correctly and blammo, "free" anti-aliasing. If the console has the hardware to run the games properly at higher resolutions, it could resolve the severe aliasing some consoles games tend to suffer but taking advantage of it.
No? You can't get 4k on a non-4k monitor, it's still going to be 1080p
it would still improve quality -- down-sampling 4k to 1080 looks quite nice. or you can just use that extra processing power on better graphics and effects if you're on a 1080 display.
$400? Calling it now this is gonna be the next Note 7.

What does that even mean?
