This is our first update video for the Skyblivion project in 2017 but it’s a BIG one. After the massive and unexpected success of our ‘’Return to Cyrodiil’’ video we have gained a lot of momentum thanks to the new volunteers that decided to join the project. We have made more progress in the 2 months after the release of our update video than we have in the year prior to it. All of this thanks to our community who shared our work ALL OVER THE WORLD and the help of our new volunteers.
Wonder if it'll ever be finished
Not sure which one will be playable first - Skyblivion or Beyond Skyrim: Cyrodiil.
It's possible that Skyblivion won't be playable for 2 more years or so. Check Skywind. It's nearly done and still isn't playable.
My hype for this kind of died after I realized that beyond updated graphics, there really isn't much this can offer me. Because I'll be playing Oblivion in Skyrim. Oblivion...in Skyrim.
I applaud their efforts but I have no personal desire to play Oblivion with better graphics, worse gameplay, and worse UI, beyond walking around to see how everything looks now that it's remastered.

Worse gameplay? I'd say the only thing that's really worse in Skyrim is the magic system and they fully intend on changing that down the line in Skyblivion, I mean the combat is still shite in Skyrim don't get me wrong, but it's better than Oblivion's in regards to swordplay and bowplay, though admittedly not much changed in regards to Bow play.
Oblivion felt like flaying at air most of the time, at least Skyrim improved on that to an extent and the UI is going to be different.
[editline]edit[/editline]
So really you'll just be getting a fun game with a far better story and far better quests "remastered" in a marginally better engine, what's not to like?
they're implementing their own UI that is a mix between Skyrim and Oblivion, and they already have implemented missing gameplay features like spell crafting
Skywind and Skyblivion aren't be developed in the same manner as Morroblivion
Is there a video or screenshot preview of the new UI? Considering everyone since it came out has been content to use SkyUI I haven't been hopeful for a more extensive UI overhaul to ever be made as part of anything.

Maybe, but...I play as mages. All the time. Which means Skyrim leaves a hell of a lot to be desired in comparison to Oblivion for me.

Well don't worry then, because you'll be getting spell crafting.

Not quite enough for me, no.
Skyrim's magic is fucking borked. For one, you can't cast magic with a button anymore. Meaning unless you carry one in your offhand and lose your ability to cast spells to full potential (which are better than daggers), daggers (which have been considered a traditional part of mage equipment for decades) are pretty much useless and will only ever be used if one was to run out of magicka and not have potions and remembered to even use it. I carried daggers on every mage I ever played in Skyrim and always forgot them.
Also, this means using a two handed weapon is impossible as a mage without constantly faffing about in your inventory. Which is a shame because there were certainly two handed swords that would be fitting for a magical character in Oblivion, and it was nice to have the option.
The balance of magic was fucked up and awful. With or without extensive modding I never felt like magic was in any way useful in Skyrim. Usually my companions would be much stronger than me, cutting apart enemies with ease with the divide only growing as as I leveled up. The highlight for me was a fucking 40 minute long fight with the big bad dragon midway through the game, which lasted forever because I had no companion and magicka regenerates too slow on it's own, and is used much too quickly, leaving me standing behind cover and popping out to throw a quick fireball every now and then at a dragon that was determined to just sit around forever and never fuck off. I'm not terribly familiar with vanilla Oblivion magic but I've always used supreme magicka and magic always felt viable and fun.
The next few could be taken care of but;
A lack of a 'true' atronach class in Skyrim is a low point for me. There is an atronach stone but it isn't as hardcore. I really like playing Atronachs in Oblivion so this is a downside.
The robes and staffs in Skyrim were awful. Most staffs were completely useless, most robes looked the exact fucking same and bland. Because of the game's insistence on being a gritty game of thrones clone, you never ever find robes that are truly fancy or opulent. You mostly look like and feel like a hobo rather than a powerful wizard the entire game. Which is fine for old nordic characters maybe, but for say, a high elf or a breton, it doesn't fit.
The spell variety was so much worse. I never felt like there were fun 'functional' spells. Things like feather, and open lock, were completely absent. This makes you engage in or ignore the lockpicking mechanic and makes it feel much less like you have control over your environment the way you should feel (because you're a fucking wizard)
Because of the lack of attributes to even buff, enchantments were boring as fuck. Most robes had the exact same fucking enchantment, with one word swapped. Destruction spells cost less to cast, magicka regenerates faster. Restoration spells cost less to cast, magicka regenerates faster. Grand.
I could go on but I think my message is clear. I really fucking hate Skyrim's magic system. I'd say it is the worst magic in any game I've ever played so far, topped even by games where magic is a mere side feature like Don't Starve.

None of your complaints are that hard to fix in the scheme of things, except perhaps the magic button.
[editline]edit[/editline]
I'm not terribly familiar with vanilla Oblivion magic but I've always used supreme magicka and magic always felt viable and fun.
So wait a tic, you've barely played with Vanilla Oblivion magic and instead downloaded a mod that made magic ultimately more useful? Like I fucking love Oblivion and it's magic, but other than a few spells, like Disintegrate armour + Weapons, or just a straight up fire spell that can one hit kill anything vanilla Oblivions magic system really wasn't all that useful it was FULL of fluff spells that you really weren't going to use, or weren't useful in the slightest, fun to use sure, mixing and matching, making your own spells was great fun and because of that it was ultimately more viable than in Skyrim because the spells could scale indefinitely past level limits, but ultimately it came down to you making a spell that could straight up fuck anything up in one cast and that's it.
I'm not saying what Skyrim did was correct, it should still have spell crafting, but it's really not as bad as you are making it out to be and ultimately a lot of what you are missing in the spells system can easily be modded in, they ARE going for a full "remaster" after all, feather spells and open lock spells are entirely possible, given Enderal.
So I haven't been following this really at all, but I want to know how the voice acting is going to work in this.
Is it going to use all the original dialogue from Oblivion or are they going to get people to re-dub them? OB's hammy voice acting is one main reasons I love the game so much, so I don't know how I would feel if it all got replaced.

It's going to be using certain vanilla assets and the voices are one of them, you'll obviously need the game for that, unlike in Skywind where they have to voice everyone because a significant portion of it is text based.

This is also one of the bigger missed opportunities. I know it's way more work but I wish they'd do a re-voice of a significant portion of the NPCs since Oblivion had about 10 voice actors for a thousand characters.

I feel like that's asking for a lot, I mean this is a free project after all.
[editline]edit[/editline]
And while I agree that the voices are all very similar because of the fact that they barely had any voice actors, it's honestly not that bad.

Don't get me wrong I'm not blaming them for not doing it, but I think if I was making the project I'd at the very least be wishing I could do it too

People said the same about Black Mesa, and this has been in development for a far shorter time than that while it's made a ton of progress

Didn't BM also make quite some progress at the start, then slow down to a crawl but later pick up and finally release?

I thought they were dubbing the original dialogues? Pretty sure they are using voice actors, otherwise it's Beyond Skyrim.

I don't know last I checked, but perhaps that's changed and their plans have expanded somewhat with the renewed vigor of community interest, even so, the original voice acting is still perfectly fine to utilize.
[editline]edit[/editline]
And I've looked into Beyond: Skyrim and that looks like a pipe dream and half, the entire continent of Tamriel playable in Skyrim, that's one ambitious project that'll never see the light of day.

While I disagree with some points you raise, the Skyblivion team has mentioned using the shout button, since there are no shouts in Oblivion, as a dedicated magic button as in Oblivion.

Reminds me of Tamriel Rebirth. It was planned to add all of Tamriel to Morrowind, but quickly realized they bit off more than they could chew and scaled it back to the rest of Morrowind beyond Vvardenfell

1. Hotkeys 1-0 existed for that reason. You could easily have used a programmable mouse/gamepad to double click and immediately use a spell, then swap back. For me this thing wouldn't even be going out of the way.
2. The balance of magic is only fucked when you don't buy more powerful spells and use better items. You shouldn't be playing with the starting fire balls when you're level 80.
I thought they were dubbing the original dialogues? Pretty sure they are using voice actors, otherwise it's Beyond Skyrim.
Unless something has changed for some reason, Skyblivion is just 1:1 remaking Oblivion in Skyrim and will be using the original voices. Beyond Skyrim: Cyrodiil has voice actors because they're remaking Cyrodiil in the 4th era, like an expansion for Skyrim.
And I've looked into Beyond: Skyrim and that looks like a pipe dream and half, the entire continent of Tamriel playable in Skyrim, that's one ambitious project that'll never see the light of day.
Beyond Skyrim is just a collected name for a bunch of different projects, it's not so much one big project to make all of Tamriel playable in Skyrim as it is a bunch of smaller projects to make individual provinces playable in Skyrim, with the stretch goal of hopefully maybe having all provinces playable. So like, while perhaps something like Beyond Skyrim: Black Marsh might not come out, (just as an example) Beyond Skyrim: Cyrodiil still can.
In the case of Cyrodiil, at least for the time being they're actually planning on doing a staggered release sort of thing with the county of Bruma (since it's the closest to Skryim's border, I would imagine) being the first content released sometime in the near-ish future.
[editline]boop[/editline]
Also, it's worth mentioning that one of the bigger reasons these projects have been taking so long is because it was only like a couple years ago that modders figured out how to reliably do custom animations, and before then a lot of the development was trying to figure out how to fit creatures to existing animations without looking absolutely horrid.
1. Hotkeys 1-0 existed for that reason. You could easily have used a programmable mouse/gamepad to double click and immediately use a spell, then swap back. For me this thing wouldn't even be going out of the way.

The thing about the "more powerful spells" concept is that the more powerful spells are very mechanically different. Your best method of dealing magic damage goes from a comfy spray-and-pray attack, to the standard projectile attack, to a different projectile attack that is ludicrously expensive and possibly dangerous to the user, to a big expensive chargeup blast wave that I have not once successfully used without being splattered first. Plus, after a certain point, the previous spells become mostly useless for dealing damage, and so you end up losing options as you get stronger.
Installing those magic overhaul mods that let you scale spell damage with skill levels was the best idea I've ever had.

I could give less of a shit the subjective lack of shits people feel about it, a major project like this jumpstarts people's entire careers. If it turns out to be pretty darn good then why should we care to criticize doing what they loved to do?
People lost hype for Black Mesa after 10 years in development, then it came out and everybody fuckin' flipped out and they were thrown into the video game dev spotlight. All that work put them up top with the big shots of the video gaming industry. The scope of a major overhaul like this is way beyond just "skyrim swordplay sucks D:<". It's a huge deal for your portfolio, and god forbid somebody does it for fun right?
This looks amazing. The colors really make the Skyrim engine shine!
