Hey all, looking for suggestions and comments for a game I'm working on. It's a physics based top down shooter. I'm also looking for title ideas, so feel free to post suggestions. Newest Version: http://megaswf.com/serve/2238525 WASD to move, arrow keys to shoot, spacebar to restart.
It's nice, but I'd highly recommend an alternative mouse to shoot control scheme instead of arrows. It feels weird having hands on WASD and <^>V, but maybe that's just me.
I actually really like the arrow key shooting thing. It's somewhat fresh. Try adding some sounds.
Much too hard. The objects move really damn fast, and take forever to destroy.
Thanks for the feedback. The arrow aiming was a deliberate choice to force the player to move around a bit more, given that the planets don't actively move towards you. Sounds and music are definitely gonna happen, but I'm waiting until I've got the rest of the game polished before adding them. Difficulty wise I'm not sure I agree that it is too difficult, but I could use some feedback. Rate me disagree if you think it's too hard, friendly if it's too easy. I'm already intending on giving the player health so that the ship can take 3 hits rather than just 1.
I actually like this game's controls the way they are because like you said, it makes you move around more. I also like the particle effects. I think there needs to be some warning when invincibility is about to wear off though. I'll be about to ram a blob and then it goes away right before I hit it and I die.
Hello again Facepunch. Here is an almost complete version of the game. I still need to add sounds/music and a little bit of other stuff but it's almost there. http://megaswf.com/serve/2215723 Let me know what you think, and post your high scores.
About the mouse thing: The Binding of Isaac has mouse controls as well as keyboard controls. The mouse controls still shoot the same way as the keyboard, though. Depending on where your mouse is corresponding to the Player, the bullets will shoot out to the left, right, up, or down just as the keyboard does. This method keeps the same "keep the player moving" idea, but adds mouse control for those who want it.
This is really nice, great work. I'd like a bigger playing field, sometimes it feels like I have no room to dodge. Maybe double the width? Score: 12200
Here's a slightly larger version, I had already been thinking of making it a bit bigger. http://megaswf.com/serve/2216026 rate agree if you think this is an improvement rate disagree if you think it's worse I'll see what I can do about alternative mouse controls now that I understand what you mean.

Turns out I had a fairly large problem with how the planets were being spawned that wasn't pointing them towards the center. I fixed it so now the planets should never skirt along the edge when they spawn. http://megaswf.com/serve/2221165 I also fixed a crashing error (I think) that happened when you reset. Let me know if anyone gets any error messages.
New highscore is 17900. Are planets supposed to sometimes explode when hitting each other? Because it happened several times.
11,200 is my new high score. overall fun little game, although needs more unlockables.
New highscore is 17900. Are planets supposed to sometimes explode when hitting each other? Because it happened several times.
The planets lose health gradually if they start moving too slowly. I'm assuming this was what happened, maybe not though.
19600, I agree with Irockz. More powerups are needed. Maybe a health boost. A little health meter would also be nice, just hearts to show life. For powerups, a rare one that auto destroys all planets onscreen would be cool, a gravity thing to constantly push planets away from you (weakly push), maybe slow time, and maybe powerdowns also? Slow, can't shoot, weak shot, etc.

I also feel it would be unfair in a highscore oriented game to randomly reward players with extra health, as this could drastically skew someones score based on them getting a really lucky powerup. I do like some of your power up ideas. I will probably add a destroy all planets powerup, as well as one then drastically reduces the speed of all the planets on screen. Thanks for all the input MeltingData, I really appreciate it.
i think the game look a bit dull designwise. Like, it looks like an average flashgame Here's an example of what I think it's a cool one http://flying-lotus.com/destroy/ Like, its really a bit different and strange, with that background, it really gives another ambient. Nontheless if you can't change it now its still good
Any chance of making a leaderboard for it?
Did I win?
Any chance of making a leaderboard for it?
The leaderboards will be outside of the game, I intend to have them on Newgrounds and Kongregate because they have functionality for it. Nice score space1, although you didn't quite win yet (I managed to score 500k once). It's good to see other people getting high scores. I hope you had fun doing it. Later today I intend to add mouse aiming and a planet slowing power up. I might tweak some other things a little bit too, but probably not in a very noticeable way. Then I will add music, sound effects, and a title screen. That'll probably just about do it.
How do you get hundreds of thousands? The highest score I got was 19! And usually I was killed by a surprise planet zooming from the edge at an incredibly high speed. I was also experiencing some really bad fps. Controls are pretty tedious and the balance needs work.

Keep killing the planets rapidly and soon you'll be scoring 1k (and more) per kill. About being killed by surprise planets, stay away from the edge as much as possible. Not much more to be done about that, and you can die the same way in similar games that spawn enemies from the sides of the screen. About the FPS, I'm not sure what to do about that, since I already nerfed the particle effects. Are you playing the newest version I posted or the version from the OP? Rate me disagree if you get bad FPS on the newest version I've posted. Controlwise, I'm planning on adding mouse aiming (still 8 directional) and slightly increasing the speed of the ship (which gives inertia to the shots, thus making strafing planets slightly easier). I'm not really sure what you mean about the balance. This is a game with a learning curve, and you will get higher scores as you become better at dodging, aiming, and maintaining combos.
This could also probably benefit from a pause button.
Here's the newest version. I added mouse aiming as well as 2 rare powerups that slow down or destroy all the onscreen planets. I also tweaked some stuff, such as making the ship slightly faster. http://megaswf.com/serve/2238525 On another note, if anyone feels like helping me find a cool (free) font to use, I would greatly appreciate it. Feel free to post suggestions.
http://megaswf.com/serve/2239318 I edited the text effect so that the previous score/powerup text doesn't disappear when you get a new one. They should appear in the right place better than they did before too. I'm experimenting with a new font I found. It's probably not the final one I will use. Tell me with an agree if the font shows up for you or a disagree if it's just Times New Roman (I don't know if Flash packages fonts when it compiles). Anyone have any name ideas?
SCORE 40900 Press SPACE to restart! I'm loving the mouse aiming. I believe it's Times New Roman, could you post the font alongside TMR?
http://www.1001freefonts.com/JandaManatee.php This is the font I set it to. Glad you're enjoying the mouse aiming.
Yeah it's just Times New Roman. You really have drive with this, a lot of games that people try to make get abandoned.
