I have been playing guitar for 5 years now. Im 16 years old And i feel like I have made pretty much no progress. I mean people tell me im amazing at guitar but I know im not very good. To give you an example of how good Im at guitar. I can play Technical Difficulties by Paul Gilbert. But thats about the Hardest I can go. And look at this kid hes playing it and he has only been playing for 3 years. And he has made a lot more progress. So I have decided I need to get serious about playing guitar. But I have no idea how. I know your basic theory (1,3,5s, 1,4,5s and some scales and arpeggios) But not much. Can you guys point me into the right direction of where to go. Also I listen to a lot of Steely Dan, Judas Priest, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Steve Vai, and Paul Gilbert.
You just practice, practice scales and theory and don't worry about other people. Also playing the same piece of music doesn't mean your the same level a guitarist as someone.

Yeah. I do play a lot of complex chords that most people cannot do
if you just wanna be super-fast and shred off arpeggio's and play C6add9/5+ chords then yeah just keep practicing scales and theories and do scales up and down the fret board
but if you wanna actually make music and develop a unique style you're gonna have to learn to switch your brain off
but then again it depends on what you like

then just play and don't worry about how fast you are
If you hadn't already realised, unless you're entering technical metal or something, most genres of music do not require extreme speed, and have a higher emphasis on expression.
If you can really make what you play come alive, and have people really enjoy listening to you, then you are 'good'
I've been playing much longer than you and I highly doubt I could play technical difficuilties, simply because that's not the type of music I'm into or like to play, I concentrate more on rhythm and chords, and I'm by no means a bad guitarist. Fast=/=good
