He is best known for introducing MDMA, the purest form of ecstasy, to psychologists in the 70s. Shulgin published the popular TiHkal (Tryptamines I Have Known And Loved) and PiHKAL (Phenethylamines I Have Known And Loved) with his wife, Ann. Shulgin was formerly a chemist for The Dow Chemical Company before he moved on in 1965 to pursue his own research, which he performed at his house in Berkeley, California. He is credited with having sampled and synthesized over 200 psychedelic drug compounds. Shulgin had suffered a stroke when he turned 85, and an organization had been set up to help to cover health costs.
Shulgin created many minimally harmful, mind-opening drugs such as MDMA. I haven't had a chance to partake in that particular substance, but near derivatives have given me many fun and enlightening nights. Rest in peace.

Roll in peace
Roll in peace
Christ what a bad pun. I'm sure he's rolling in his grave.
An inspiration to scientists and trippers alike. He will be missed.
If you've ever taken a psychedelic beyond the classics of LSD, Psilocybin, Mescaline and DMT, this guy almost certainly was the first to synthesize it.
“There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. Some kind of high powered mutant never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.”
Rest in peace a truly great man.
This guy was hardcore. Rest in peace.
Hate to burst your bubble but wasn't MDMA first made around the 1900 or so.
Hate to burst your bubble but wasn't MDMA first made around the 1900 or so.
Yes in 1912 A. Köllisch used MDMA as an intermediate compound in the synthesis of methylhydrastinine, as he wanted to prepare an analogue for hydrastine, as it's patent was already in place by a rival medical company. [editline]3rd June 2014[/editline] You should still give Shulgin more recognision, not as just the grandfather of ecstacy, he was also the great mind the wrote TiHKAL and PiHKAL
He did so much more than just synthesize and popularize MDMA. Rest in peace.
minimal my ass, it uses up your seritonin.
And, wait for it... your brain produces more! Crazy right? Its not we have a finite supply of transmitter in our synapses.
minimal my ass, it uses up your seritonin.
And that equates to the damage it causes in the brain how, exactly? The neurotoxicity of MDMA only comes into play with extended, excessive use and even then it's entirely reversible.
And, wait for it... your brain produces more! Crazy right? Its not we have a finite supply of transmitter in our synapses.
yeah until you run out then your just going to be depressed for the rest of your life.
Shut up you guys, MDMA is fantastic! [editline]3rd June 2014[/editline] It's the purest form of ecstasy!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serotonin_syndrome It is nothing to disregard.
Serotonin syndrome is incredibly rare and usually only occurs when combining certain serotonergic drugs. It's not an effect of MDMA itself unless your idea of a fun night is taking a massive overdose of MDMA or doing a cocktail of Prozac and MDMA. So yeah, pretty easy to disregard it, assuming you have some basic knowledge on MDMA.
yeah until you run out then your just going to be depressed for the rest of your life.
i just shit my pants bc i read this post
Rest in peace. He can only be in a better place.
rip sasha. a great mind who will surely never be forgotten.
yeah until you run out then your just going to be depressed for the rest of your life.
yeah that's a load of bullshit fear mongering talk, you won't be 'depressed for the rest of your life'.
yeah until you run out then your just going to be depressed for the rest of your life.
I've taken 4 doses in my lifetime, over the span of two years. I can honestly say it helped me work through a lot of the mental paradoxes that were acting as major contributors to my depression and anxiety, and my only reason for wanting to do more in the future is so that I can feel the warmth of objective self examination and perhaps improve myself and outlook on life further. It's never been a 'party drug' for me, nor is it one that I've had the impulse to seek out when I have the disposable income.
RIP Shulgin, you were perhaps on an even higher level than Hoffman was.
