Hi, I'm kimchimafia and I've been thinking about creating a comics thread on Facepunch for awhile. I don't know if there's a lot of people that read comics here but it's a worth a shot. Even if you don't read them, you're free to ask questions about characters, storylines and etc... If you are interested in comics but just don't know where to start from, I'm willing to help as best I can. If you already read comics, it would be cool to introduce yourself and maybe post your favorite characters, writers, books or artists. As for me, my favorite characters would be Superman, Spider Man, Venom and Ghost Rider. Favorite writers/aritsts would be Alan Moore, Mark Waid, Elliot S Maggin, Curt Swan, Gary Frank and Grant Morrison. I mostly read DC comics these days but I think I know most of the updated stuff on the Marvel universe. However as big as comics are, the chances are that you were introduced to these characters by a film, tv series and etc... I think that they can be just as important as their sources and you should check them out if you don't have time for reading and collecting comics. I can't list every single adaptation on here but here are some major ones. Superman the Movie (1978): This film proved to the world that comic book movies can be done seriously and the genre can be respected in the film medium. Before that, just imagine comic book adaptations onto film and television were kinda like our video game adapted movies of today. Nobody took them seriously and it was just harmless, simple fan fun. It's fitting that Superman ushered in the heroes on the silver screen as he did the same for comic books. Nolan and Goyer were inspired by this film when they started the Dark Knight trilogy. Superman II is also worth checking out. Tim Burton's Batman and Batman Returns: I guess you can say that these films pioneered the way for 'dark' and 'stylistic' interpretations of comic book heroes. These films are entirely different from the tone of the Nolan films and I suggest you at least check them out if you haven't already. Batman: The Animated Series was inspired from this and it shows. Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy: These films have a lot of things in them. They can be corny, heartwarming, awesome, silly, sad and funny. It's an adaptation of what Raimi thought the best and essential of Spider-Man were and you get a lot of references to the older comics in them. Things are changed around and it's not exactly the most accurate adaptation and people argue about the mediocrity of the 1st film and 'crappyness' of the third one but still check them out if you haven't. Honestly, this trilogy is worth it just for Spider-Man 2 IMO. Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy: Lol, don't need to describe this. Check them out if you somehow lived under a rock. Marvel's Film Universe: Now these films are all interconnected in the same universe. It starts from Iron Man to all the way to the Avengers film that came out in 2012. They're action packed, fairly accurate, fun films. I think everybody has seen these films already but if you haven't, at least watch Downey Jr for his awesome Tony Stark. Batman The Animated Series: Highly stylised and unique animated television show that was inspired by the Burton films. You've got Kevin Conroy as Batman and Mark Hamill as the Joker in here. It's fantastic and one of the best examples of an animated show that was suitable for anyone. Even if you don't like Batman, watch it for the atmosphere, writing and perfomances. You won't be disappointed. Justice League The Animated Series: The prospect of a live action Justice League movie seems far away however you have this instead. Great fun and surprisingly a lot of subtle humor in this. If you don't like Superheroes for whatever reason, comics don't stop there. We've got stuff ranging from Donald Duck to the Sandman series. Ask away if you're interested in comics but not the heroes. Besides DC and Marvel, you could check out other publishers like Dark Horse comics. They do a lot of cool things that aren't related to superheroes. You can check out their stuff here. http://www.darkhorse.com/Comics/ If you want to check out stuff that doesn't revolve 'mainstream' superheroes but still revolves around superheroes anyway you could always check out these guys. Watchmen: Alan Moore's famous graphic novel and that was adapted into a film in 2009 by Zack Snyder. However like some comic books like All Star Superman, it's just not possible to adapt the entirety of the graphic novel onto film. Don't miss this out even if you already watched the film. Spawn: Todd McFarlane's own 90s Anti-Hero. It's not looking great for the Hellspawn these days but some of his older stuff is fun to read. Basically the story is about a government agent called Al Simmons that dies on a mission, goes to hell, makes a deal with the devil to see his wife again so he comes back to life. Problem now is that he sold his soul, it's been years after his death and his wife is already remarried to his best friend. Oh plus, now he must join Hell's Army as one of its soldiers. The question is, will he lose his humanity and succumb to his deal? There was a movie done in 1997 and personally it's a guilty pleasure of mine to watch. It's not that great but IMO the Violator is hilarious. Oh there was also an animated series on HBO that had goddamn Keith David as the titular character. It's on Youtube for you to watch. V for Vendetta: Also one of Alan Moore's greats. I'm sure you had heard something about this already or at least recognise that mask. An adaptation was also done which starred Padme and Agent Smith. It's pretty good. You should watch it. If I failed to convince you to check out anything from this post, stick around and see what other people post. Ask away if you want to.
I actually have the Civil War arc from Spider-Man's perspective sitting in one book right next to me. I don't buy comics nearly often enough, but I love them.
A few weeks ago I went to several comic book establishments in order to find a limited edition that my dad needs to complete his collection. It was the first time I had ever been in comic book stores, and it was awesome. I felt at home. :D Unfortunately we never found the comic because apparently it was only distributed at the Baltimore museum and it is now the only residence that sells it.
Thanks for the first reply archangel! Yeah I know what you mean, I'm seriously lagging behind the new comics in general these days but my money is running away from me and life's busy. Still, they can be a great source of entertainment, story, inspiration and escapism. Can't recommend them enough. Years of history and character are all there for you to discover. Shame you couldn't find the comic for your dad. I hope you get in the comic scene one day.
I recently started reading the Dark Tower comics published by Marvel and they're really great.
Hm, I will probably update the OP later to include more info on related media such as the animated series of Batman, Superman, Justice League and the films. Anything related to those or even slightly to the medium of comics is free to discuss. I think a lot of us were introduced to comic books and their characters via those anyway.
I collect mostly Superman and Batman comics. I'm trying to collect all of the ones that take place after Crisis on Infinite Earths mostly because I don't want to read anything that isn't relevant to current continuity. My favorite artists are John Byrne and Alex Ross. I'd collect Marvel comics, but I don't really know where to start. With DC, it's easy because there are obvious universe reboots that make for a good launching off point.
I've subscribed to Donald Duck for around 10 years and have no plans to stop Oldest one I have is one from '64 iirc
Did a sloppy update on the OP. Suggestions for adding stuff in are welcome.
You should put a little thing in there for Dark Horse in my opinion.
Green Lantern.
Always good to see a Green Lantern fan. Say, who's your favorite Lantern?
Always good to see a Green Lantern fan. Say, who's your favorite Lantern?
I have two! Guy Gardner and Hal Jordan,
Hmmm, don't wanna set off any buttons but what were your reactions to the Green Lantern film and how they treated Hal Jordan?
Hmmm, don't wanna set off any buttons but what were your reactions to the Green Lantern film and how they treated Hal Jordan?
Ryan Reynolds is a terrible Hal Jordan.. He did kick the shit out of Kilowog during training though, which was pretty cool!
I still think Ryan Reynolds should've been used to play The Flash. I don't hate the guy, he just gets himself into bad roles.
I still think Ryan Reynolds should've been used to play The Flash. I don't hate the guy, he just gets himself into bad roles.
He would suit The Flash actually. I think they should have gone with a Guy Gardiner story. I would have enjoyed that more.
If all the known superheroes were to battle it out all at once. Dr. Manhattan would win.
That is highly highly debatable and probably wrong.
If all the known superheroes were to battle it out all at once. Dr. Manhattan would win.
considering the hulk has fought gods and survived, punched holes through planets and such. i think he'd give dr. smurfcunt a good kicking.
Well being physical to Dr Manhattan shouldn't really harm him. I was thinking of more the cosmic and magical heroes.
considering the hulk has fought gods and survived, punched holes through planets and such. i think he'd give dr. smurfcunt a good kicking.
But then he would just teleport the hulk into a supermassive black hole at the center of the galaxy.
needs more Watchmen
I got some of the free comics from the marvel recent promotion and Avengers Arena seems pretty decent Is it any good after the first issue? [editline]18th April 2013[/editline]
That is highly highly debatable and probably wrong.
Dr Manhattan is basically a god And not a marvel god where its just a superstrong guy, Manhattan can do literally anything
Read all of Vertigo's Y: The Last Man last week, great book.
Dr Manhattan is basically a god And not a marvel god where its just a superstrong guy, Manhattan can do literally anything
No he cannot do everything. He's not The Presence or the One Above All. I'm betting the Spectre can take him down. I haven't even brought up The sword of superman. [editline]18th April 2013[/editline] OP update coming soon.

[editline]18th April 2013[/editline] sounds like a real god to me har har har
You can't be serious man. He can annihilate his own universe for sure but bring me feats of him time traveling, mind reading, pure omniscience, dimension jumping, invulnerability to magic, universe altering powers and then we can talk about if he's the most powerful superhero. I swear, people just bring up Dr Manhattan without ever justifying their reason doing so. [editline]19th April 2013[/editline] Also please read this if you're gonna debate battles in here, especially battles including dr manhattan. Is there a superhero that isn't terribly powerful whose stories are mostly personal? I had started reading Spider-man but the story got really weird lately and I want something else. (Not that he's weak but he filled the niche)
Well what power limits do you want on your character? I'd argue that the more powerful a character gets, the more focus you'd get on his/her personal stuff but I digress.
