A "major milestone" in the battle to eliminate polio globally has been reached, the US Centres for Disease Control (CDC) has said.
Its experts think a second of the three forms of poliovirus has been eliminated after mass vaccination campaigns.
Wild poliovirus type 3 has not been detected for more than two years. Type 2 was eradicated in 1999.
Experts said the world was "closer than ever" to defeating polio but the situation in Pakistan was worrying.
Polio is highly infectious and causes paralysis in up to one in 200 people. Some children die when the muscles that help them breathe stop working.
But there has been huge progress in eliminating the disease. Cases have fallen from 350,000 in 1988 to 416 in 2013.
Not going to happen until these retards in the United States are forced to vaccinate their kids. It's truly a shame.

That's not really the problem, there hasn't been a polio outbreak in the US since 1979 and the entire Americas have been polio-free since the 90s. Polio these days only persists in a handful of developing countries

You're thinking of Measles, friend, not Polio. The Measles vaccine is 51 years old and cases in North America are sharply rising because of antivax idiots.
Polio, on the other hand, was just recently eradicated from India.

And what happens when some illegal immigrant comes over to the states without their necessary vaccinations? Those kids are dead. It's still a risk in the United States and we need to start taking it more seriously. It isn't an immediate threat but it still is a threat that endangers tens of thousands of innocent lives due to the actions of incompetent and willfully misinformed and uneducated parents.

Although I agree that not vaccinating is stupid, this isn't the thread to discuss it.
Lighten up a bit, this is positive news.

Anti vaccination parents are dumb but really you are misplacing your contempt here. Quit being angsty.

It's an issue on top of another issue. The third world is a risk to the first world and I think it's time that point is made to the general public.
This is incredibly positive news but there's a long way to go. I'd really like to see polio die in my lifetime.

Fair enough.

Remind me how the first world has to take priority over the third world, because I don't see what makes it more important.
