not this shit again
this is going to be terrible, hopefully everything manages to work out in their favor
ohhhhhh fuck
ohhhh fuck
[sp]we're all gonna be poor[/sp]
Wow, that's some p. late aftershocks.
It does seem pretty far up there though. I'm not sure how fast or far tsunami's travel but it's atleast not right next to the main island.
Any word on Tsunami threat?

Depending on the size of the quake, tsunamis travel very fast and very far. They are virtually invisible at sea and only start to crest when they get close to land. All that built up speed and energy is what makes them so dangerous. The wave may only be a few meters tall but it's like being hit by a sack of... well, to say bricks would be an understatement.
My understanding is most of that area is uninhabited, so the impact should be minimal
My best guess is that there's gonna be a wave of destruction, somewhere.
hopefully the reefs will protect hawaii and dissipate the waves to result in great surf again.

No current threat of Tsunami, according to the NOAA.
There's no tsunami threat still?

Go here and hit f5, but it seems that they're sure nothing is going down.
Poor Japan. They can never win, can they?
In another report for a 6.6m earthquake they say
NO DESTRUCTIVE WIDESPREAD TSUNAMI THREAT EXISTS BASED ON
HISTORICAL EARTHQUAKE AND TSUNAMI DATA.
HOWEVER - EARTHQUAKES OF THIS SIZE SOMETIMES GENERATE LOCAL
TSUNAMIS THAT CAN BE DESTRUCTIVE ALONG COASTS LOCATED WITHIN
A HUNDRED KILOMETERS OF THE EARTHQUAKE EPICENTER
So my guess is, maybe.
Even if there was a tsunami, that nice little island chain shooting out from Japan would kill it enough to not cause any damage to Japan.
Not much to worry about. The tsunami that hit japan last year was 9.0. The richter scale is logarithmic.
Hint: That means each 1.0 increase means it's 10x as powerful as the last. This means it was 15x less powerful than the 9.0
Jesus, someone really has a vendetta on Japan with all these earthquakes.

Or it's a natural.

I know yeah, I'm just saying it in a "corr poor japan" sense :v:
It's way the fuck up north. It isn't as much as a threat as the last one.
Hey Mother Nature. You fucking missed Vancouver again you slut.

You better watch out. The Juan De Fuca has been itching to go forever. If it snaps with one large quake it'll fuck the whole Washington/BC area like the Japan quake/tsunami.

why would you wish something like that

You're acting quite ignorant like the rest of the WC. The JDF and the San Andreas plate are overdue for a quake.
ahahahaha 'megathrust'
There's not going to be a Tsunami. Why?
Depth: 625.9km (388.9mi)
It happened so deep in the Earth that the Ocean didn't give a fuck
How the fuck does an Earthquake happen that deep down anyway? I mean the Earth's crust is only like 50 km thick at most, isn't it (and I think it averages like 20 or 30 km in thickness in most places)?
Don't worry guys, Japan has multiple 7.5s every year, they are prepared for them.

And the Oceanic crust is even thinner than the continental crust. 6 - 8 km in thickness.
magnitude-7 quakes aren't really that rare

You mean 20 times less powerful, as double the power of a 7.5 would be an 8.0, and 10 times that is 9.0.
It's easiest to think of it as reverse scientific notation. the first number is the number of 0s while the second is the condensed number.

Eh... close enough! But yeah there's like a dozen of these things per year.
