is the ~inspirational~ music really necessary
I don't see why not. Adds to the atmosphere/point?
There's a quieter music version available.

dunno just felt like there was an asshole violin player playing his violin in my ear while I'm trying to listen to someone 10 feet away
I know its late, but shit. This thing always motivates and inspires me.
GUYS! We should set up a Kickstarter to give North Korea some missiles so 'Merica has something to be scared of and we can be great again, CMAWN!
Probably one of the most important videos on the internet right now. It's stuff like this that got me into Mechatronic engineering.
I don't know what it is with people thinking going into space is the only thing that defines "the future."
I don't know what it is with people thinking going into space is the only thing that defines "the future."
because going 2 space is
a. cool as all hell
b. creates technology
I don't know what it is with people thinking going into space is the only thing that defines "the future."
Well, seeing how space brought us so many products that we use daily today... I see they get to it.
What is your definition of "the future"
Well, seeing how space brought us so many products that we use daily today... I see they get to it.
like what?

man you totally won me over
like what?
lets see
scratch proof glasses
memory foam mattresses
invisalign
to name a few from the ~1800 spinoffs nasa has listed
I don't know what it is with people thinking going into space is the only thing that defines "the future."
Because the surface (and even the volume) of the Earth is a fraction of both the resources and physical space there is available in space.
nice, well i'm so glad we needed to send people to outer space to invent those things
nice, well i'm so glad we needed to send people to outer space to invent those things
Might as well, nothing better to do.
lmao fp logic strikes again, ggwp
like what?
GPS
Microwave
Nike Air
SCBAs
Winter Tires
Fire Detectors
Just to name a few from the above mentioned.
Surely these inventions would've happened anyway, but Space catalyzed it.
nice, well i'm so glad we needed to send people to outer space to invent those things
We dont NEED to go to space for these to happen. We set GOALS for space and these things help purpose us in the process of going to space.
GPS

some of these things existed in plain years before nasa was even founded, you guys are pulling shit out of your ass
in fact afaik only GPS was developed (in part) by NASA out of all of those things
who gives a shit about nike air, are you even looking at what you're posting? wow we sent rockets into space so you could wear shoes
wowie zowie

Introducing new methods of renewing used resources and materials, bringing forth ways to improve health and education, creating more efficient transportation that can be implemented as a blanket replacement for our current situation worldwide with gas, or building power efficient homes.
I don't know, making practical but huge breakthrough things here on planet Earth, instead of stargazing while sucking Neil deGrasse Tyson's dick or whoever /r/atheism decides to hail to next week as a figurehead of "true" scientific progress.
Not pulling shit out my ass. Look at the list.

maybe since you're so interested in science, you can tell me why it takes aeronautical research to develop basketball shoes
or how it was that the first fire alarm was developed 68 years before nasa formed, but nasa still invented them right? totally
[editline]29th March 2013[/editline]
we didn't stop dreaming
facepunchers stopped using their brains

yeah guys
let's stay in the cave
we don't need to explore the world in order to invent fire

Oh, and let's get rid of all of the national art museums, since those are fucking useless as well right

They dont make consumer goods.
Fire Detector: http://spinoff.nasa.gov/spinoff/spinitem?title=Fire+Detector
Shoes:
Technology originally developed for lunar boots was adapted for athletic shoes. A process known as "blow rubber molding" used to produce helmets was applied to create hollow shoe soles that were filled with shock-absorbing material. Former NASA engineer Frank Rudy pitched an idea for a suitable shock absorber to Nike and Nike Air was born. The technology improves shock absorption, stability and motion control for athletes.
Their research improves consumer goods.
I cried.

If you're really watching the video at face value then I can understand why would might have such a backwards opinion on the subject.
The problem goes beyond just throwing people into space. There is a complete disconnect between how people perceive Science and how they "use" it. Humanizing space-flight (like during the Apollo era and to some extent, the Curiosity mission) helps to engage the public with the exploration of the Universe.
It's all well and good us throwing robotic probes into space on the down low, but if the general public doesn't understand what is going on then politicians have a much higher chance of making brain dead decisions (like cutting public spending on science research),

what is this even supposed to mean
are you like legitimately upset that the majority of people on a relatively obscure internet forum made up mostly of gaming teenagers are pro-nasa
i mean regardless of where you stand in the argument, that's pretty silly

wow you read snarky posts really well, you must be an english major who likes science too huh
Are we seriously discussing whether or not NASA is a significant help in science and technology when there's a shitload of evidence suggesting that it is?
Even if it wasn't the economic benefits of NASA through simple inspiration and useful work force is pretty much undebatable.
