North Korea said Friday it will establish its own time zone next week by pulling back its current standard time by 30 minutes.
Local time in North and South Korea and Japan has been the same since Japan's rule over what was single Korea from 1910 to 1945.
The North's official Korean Central News Agency said that the establishment of "Pyongyang time" is aimed at rooting out the legacy of the Japanese colonial period.
It said the new time zone will take effect Aug. 15 - the 70th anniversary of Korea's liberation from Japanese rule at the end of World War II.
"Pyongyang Time" sounds like a damn kids show or a meme or something.
"Its Pyongyang Time, everybody!" Few countries are as desperate as North Korea.
Please no! The timezone map is already a mess and needs to be remade completely. The only large place that really has it somewhat sane is the US.

And by extension Canada.
Those time-travellin' bastards
I didn't understand how complicated timezones were until I watched this video

At this point I don't even care about North Korea.
They'll run themselves into the ground at this rate with the silly things their doing.
As if anybody else is going to follow this time zone outside of the DPRK.

You're implying the rest of the world will acknowledge their change.
I really doubt anyone will.
How does this even benefit them in anyway, I don't understand...

You could ask this question about literally anything North Korea does.

To the gulag!

"They" meaning the government. The rest of the people suffer, and that's why you should have at least some sympathy.

It's symbolic.
It's a meaningless fuck you to Japan, who established the current timezone.
Yeah when the Koreas unite there is going to be a serious era gap. Like with any other united countries (east and west germany to be precise, still recovering from it)
This country is such a joke. Why are they doing this?

To feel more special.
It's honorable that North Korea admires "Newfie Time" so much. :v:
Nobody cares NK...
It's like they don't even know why we have timezones.
Let's just ignore them and keep doing things the way we currently are.
It's like they don't even know why we have timezones.
Wouldn't surprise me if they have no idea. If anything they'd say the US invented time zones to fuck with NK or something.
Who gives a fuck, do we even need to acknowledge this? Not like what they have to say carries any weight in the world.

The new time zone “shall be fixed as the standard time of the DPRK [Democratic People’s Republic of Korea] and called Pyongyang time,” North Korean state-run television channel KRT said Friday. “The wicked Japanese imperialists committed such unpardonable crimes as depriving Korea of even its standard time.”

All I can think of now is 22 Minutes doing their Danny Williams skits.
I'll try to find the one where they announce they have WMDs.
pulling back its current standard time by 30 minutes.
So North Korea is literally stuck in the past now?
Since we're on the topic of the DPRK, what would be the consequences of a US/NATO invasion of North Korea?
Since we're on the topic of the DPRK, what would be the consequences of a US/NATO invasion of North Korea?
Russia and China.
Russia and China.
Actually, while I would think Russia and China tend to somewhat support DPRK to piss off the West, particularly the US. They have been getting fed up with DPRK and nukes. DPRK has been causing so many issues. China particularly doesn't like those issues being at their doorstep. If I remember right some leaked diplomatic cables showed China has been preparing for the collapse of the DPRK for some time. They are coming around to the idea that just dealing with ROK would be much easier. Though current tensions in the South China Sea may have changed that.
As far as DPRK and Russia, I don't think Russia would militarily support the DPRK. As stated, I think they just do some support to piss of the US. There isn't any economic gain, and very little political gain, in supporting the DPRK.
