The move came one day after the House of Representatives voted to extend the provisions until 8 December. The White House backed the bill, but would have favoured a longer extension. The House and Senate must now reach a compromise on extending the surveillance powers, which are set to expire on 28 February. The brief extension gives those in Congress a chance to review the measures that some claim are unconstitutional infringements on personal liberties. 'Roving surveillance' The provisions covered under the bill give the US government the authority for "roving surveillance" of suspects who might be able to thwart investigative methods that ordinarily require a judge's warrant. They also give federal investigators access to business records with a warrant from a secret national security court and grant federal law enforcement greater power to watch foreign so-called "lone wolf" terror suspects. The Patriot Act was shepherded through Congress by President George W Bush shortly after the terror attacks of 11 September, 2001. Mr Bush and other supporters argued that the legal safeguards traditionally granted to criminal suspects left the US ill-protected against further attacks.
[editline] f [/editline] In all seriousness, it's only for 3 months so the congress can "review" the Patriot Act and the measures that some claim are unconstitutional infringements on personal liberties. Don't get too optimistic though. and
The White House backed the bill, but would have favoured a longer extension.
I will swear like a sailor for the rest of the night.
FFUUUUUUUUCCCCKKK Who's up for a little ol' revolution?
The Tea Party. :sigh:
lol Democrats, almost as lol as the GOP.
Wait a minute, why isn't the Tea Party mad about this shit? This is pretty god damn uprise worthy if anything our government is doing right now is, especially if a modest tax increase is.
Why hasn't a group like the ACLU taken it up in court?
What? I thought they already voted to abandon it?
What? I thought they already voted to abandon it?
That was the three year extension.
Wait a minute, why isn't the Tea Party mad about this shit? They support any measures that could potentially eliminate any of their opponents.
lol Democrats, almost as lol as the GOP.
not even close
Wow just wow. :fuckoff:
Son of a bitch. Don't get too optimistic though.
Can't they still review it even when it's not a law, to see if they want to implement it again? You're right, they're just "reviewing" it. With extra emphasis on those quotation marks.
Obviously nobody told you pansy liberals that FREEDOM ISN'T FREE. Have you forgotten about 911 (God bless never forget :911:) if these provisions were in place back then it would have never happened. How else are we going to protect America from Islamofacism and radical jihadists? They want to kill our God given American freedom and if you don't agree then you're a terrorist.
reasons like this make me happy to live in Canada
Land of the Free, so long as you conform to our social norms and subject yourself to constant inspection by security. We have more rules and regulations than most countries and that bothers me.

And Obama will be all like "I didn't want to do this, but blah blah blah I have to." just like with the Bush tax cuts. [editline]17th February 2011[/editline]
not even close
How do you explain all the democrats that voted for the PATRIOT Act then?
