Bioware is working on a modified Mass Effect 3 ending
Calling criticism of Mass Effect 3's ending "incredibly painful," the co-founder of BioWare, the studio behind the game, said today that changes for the game's conclusion are in the works.
He promises an update on those plans next month.
"Since the game launched, the team has been poring over everything they can find about reactions to the game—industry press, forums, Facebook, and Twitter, just to name a few," BioWare's Ray Muzyka said in a post on the company's official forums. "The Mass Effect team, like other teams across the BioWare Label within EA, consists of passionate people who work hard for the love of creating experiences that excite and delight our fans. I'm honored to work with them because they have the courage and strength to respond to constructive feedback.
"To that end, Exec Producer Casey Hudson and the team are hard at work on a number of game content initiatives that will help answer the questions, providing more clarity for those seeking further closure to their journey. You'll hear more on this in April. We're working hard to maintain the right balance between the artistic integrity of the original story while addressing the fan feedback we've received. This is in addition to our existing plan to continue providing new Mass Effect content and new full games, so rest assured that your journey in the Mass Effect universe can, and will, continue." [Emphasis added by Kotaku]"
Many Mass Effect 3 fans have been complaining about the game's ending just about since the game launched earlier this month. (See the endings here. Warning: they're full of spoilers.) They've complained that it failed to give the multi-game, multi-year saga closure. Opinions have been sharply divided, even among writers of this site. One writer was for it. One was against.
Some fans started a petition, imploring BioWare to change the ending. Others complained to the federal government.
Muzyka's statement highlights the conundrum BioWare faces: maintain the artistic integrity of their work or accede to fan demands. It's possible in an interactive medium that the two are not incompatible. That's what BioWare will have to figure out now.
Muzyka didn't just extend critics of the ending an olive branch. He also had a word for those who have gotten nasty:
"Some of the criticism that has been delivered in the heat of passion by our most ardent fans, even if founded on valid principles, such as seeking more clarity to questions or looking for more closure, for example – has unfortunately become destructive rather than constructive. We listen and will respond to constructive criticism, but much as we will not tolerate individual attacks on our team members, we will not support or respond to destructive commentary."
Muzyka's full note is worth a read. It's gracious but not a full acquiescence. It reads like the note of someone who's felt some hurt about this and wants to improve his team's game while maintaining a positive relationship with fans. Is there a way that everyone can win? We will find out in April.
We've been asking BioWare for at least a week to comment on the ending. We're happy to see them break their silence.
If I'm late I apologize. Looks like there really is a god :v:
So that rumour about DLC is pretty much confirmed?
Haha oh wow, I've never really heard of a game that had to change the ending because it was THAT terrible.
What I think? They predicted all of this AND they're going to charge for it.

Isn't this exactly what Charles Dickens did with Great Expectations?
Well except for the part where the original ending wasn't garbage.

Fallout 3?
On topic, I can't believe they caved in. I'm glad that they did, but I just can't believe it. They'll win back a lot of fans from this.

Charging for it would likely throw the fanbase off the deep end.

Well I mean, I like Christmas lights as much as the next guy, but still.
well, let's hope they give us something decent. almost everyone I've talked to who has played the actual game says it's incredible apart from the ending (discounting the dodgy DLC issues and stuff like that)
This modified ending will add a fourth colour.

If bioware cared about that they wouldn't have put in a 'polarizing' ending. All about the long green at the end of the day for bioware and it's publisher.
This modified ending will add a fourth colour.
For $10.

Well in Fallout 3 you got to see how your choices affected the world in classic Fallout fashion, there was no question as to what happened to the main character, and depending on if you chose to be good or not you went out feeling like you saved alot of lives. Even though you coulden't play past the end, the game had so much contenet I was perfectly fine with reloading the save prior to the final battle and doing everything I didn't do and getting that T-51b.
I didn't really feel or see any of that in Mass Effect 3's ending.
I wonder how much will they charge for it...
It won't be a "modified" ending, they'll just add more bullshit to the already bullshit ending.
What the players want isn't more explanation to a flawed, limited ending, they want Bioware to follow their promise of a largely open-ended and variable ending that takes in account all of your actions through all of the three games.
get Karpyshyn to write it please

Broken Steel didn't CHANGE the ending.
Normally you would [sp]die[/sp].
Broken Steel [sp]revealed you only were knocked out, thus still alive[/sp].
See? No changes, only adding more on top of it.
If they modify it I might actually think of buying the game.
I'm sorry, but
maintain the artistic integrity of their work
Whoever wrote this article is an idiot. How is changing a shit ending compromising their artistic integrity?

i'd rather eat shit with nice seasoning than plain shit
I find those Indoctrination Theories kinda interesting, and (slightly) wish it was true as it'd add a nice twist to the plot.

only the fans made it sound so terrible because they can't get over it
"Now featuring: Homosexual ending"
The lasers are now pink.

We'll have to wait for the Bioware DLC to come out to see if it actually replaces the ending. My guess is that it will add a fourth cop-out option through an extra level after some dialogue with the last person you meet thus leading to a decent ending.
So they will add colorblind mode?
only the fans made it sound so terrible because they can't get over it
Well, it does become truly terrible when you start looking more deeply at it.
If you haven't read it yet, this should explain what I mean.
It's really rare for a company to be given a second chance regarding something like this, let's hope they're careful and won't screw it up.

Endings are now remade! Enjoy this new ending DLC containing All of the RGB Spectre!
Or maybe they'll let shephard basically tell [sp]the star-child to go fuck himself and do whatever he wants without having to blow everything up in an explosion of pretty colors.[/sp]
I find those Indoctrination Theories kinda interesting, and (slightly) wish it was true as it'd add a nice twist to the plot.
Even if those theories were true it would still be idiotic, because of the wide array of choice you had even through Mass Effect 3 while the indoctrination supposedly happened in the Arrival DLC.
hell, it would still be a very bad idea period.
Endings are now remade! Enoy this new ending DLC containing All of the RGB Spectre!
