• White House Declares June to be Official LGBT Pride Month
LGBT rights just got another big push from the president himself. The White House on Friday issued a proclamation by President Barack Obama calling on Americans to eliminate prejudice “everywhere it exists,” declaring June as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month. “As progress spreads from State to State, as justice is delivered in the courtroom, and as more of our fellow Americans are treated with dignity and respect – our Nation becomes not only more accepting, but more equal as well,” the proclamation begins. Obama writes that although the gay rights movement saw a massive victory this month last year with Supreme Court’s decision to strike down a key provision of the Defense of Marriage Act, giving gay couples married in states where it’s legal the same federal benefits that straight couples receive, full equality is not yet here.
http://www.msnbc.com/msnbc/white-house-proclamation-declares-june-lgbt-pride-month
When's straight pride month?
the 11 other months
Cue my dad screaming at the television about how "obongo is the worst president we've ever had" whilst fox news is on
When's straight pride month?
Please be Poe's Law in effect.
goddamn hippies trying to take away hard-working straight peoples rights!!
Cue my dad screaming at the television about how "obongo is the worst president we've ever had" whilst fox news is on
One of the people I know from volunteering at my elementary's library is probably doing this as we speak.
America is surely doomed now.
When's straight pride month?
When are we going to have cemeteries for alive people? When are we going to have hospitals for healthy people? When are we going to have soup kitchens for rich people?
goddamn hippies trying to take away hard-working straight peoples rights!!
The illuminati probably had something to do with this, muh American pride never lies to me
so now June will always be the LGBT Pride Month dayum, obama's got some mad executive powers, and some strange ass priorities why not make every month LGBT Pride Month? come on 'bama, step yo game up
Probably will spark more controversy because people like to do it so much but slowly this topic will eventually be less about it and more peaceful and just. Good for them!

There isn't enough days in June for every tumblr gender.
-snip this was really fucking stupid-
This is the glorious sound of progress.
When are we going to have deep tax cuts for rich people?
Yeah! ..oh...
Why is this rated dumb, exactly? There's months set aside for blacks (February), Asian and Pacific Islanders (May), among others, is there any reason why there can't be an LGBT month? For the record, I don't know if this works the same way elsewhere in the world, but it's a commemorative month where people can publish public outreach stuff in order to educate people about the group in question.

Setting stuff like this aside for people only makes the divide further.
When are we going to have cemeteries for alive people?
We already got that, it's called solitary confinement
Because we should celebrate people equally every month. Setting stuff like this aside for people only makes the divide further.
I can agree with that, but I don't really mind if it's just a month where it's specifically set aside to promote awareness, since we have so many months already.
I like the notion behind it, be proud of who you are and let's celebrate our cultures and differences, but I don't like the whole concept of these "months". Oh well, it's not really a bad thing.
Did you earn your gayness?
I can agree with that, but I don't really mind if it's just a month where it's specifically set aside to promote awareness, since we have so many months already.
Awareness is particularly important right now; basically every single state where there is not already a settled decision, except I think North Dakota, there's a court battle raging over marriage equality and whether the law should be "all consenting adult couples are allowed" or "the Bible says". Even if it only occurs for a short period in history, this is not out of place, I feel.
Because we should celebrate people equally every month. Setting stuff like this aside for people only makes the divide further.
we don't treat people equally irl yet so you can put that argument right back in your ass
Because we should celebrate people equally every month. Setting stuff like this aside for people only makes the divide further.
That sounds like a nice idea, but the fact that the divide exists in the first place means we need these "awareness months" so that people learn that these minority groups are here to say and that no amount of bible-thumping will make them go away.
I don't see a problem with this. However, and this is from the perspective of someone who isn't straight, male, or any of that shit, like all pride months, like for example black history month, I think it'd be a lot more palatable to condense it down to a week, or maybe even a day, like a holiday. That way if you're not into it, you don't have an entire month where you just hear about whatever all the time.
I see no issue with this other than the White House could spend its time elsewhere.
People rating dumb are utterly and completely missing the point of these awareness months.
People rating dumb are utterly and completely missing the point of these awareness months.
Most of it is "b-buh muh minoritees need to stae minorutees"
I don't see a problem with this. However, like all pride months, like for example black history month, I think it'd be a lot less intrusive (I dunno if intrusive is the right word but that's the best I can think of) to condense it down to a week, or maybe even a day, like a holiday.
