WASHINGTON—U.S. Special Operations forces conducted a raid in eastern Syria late Friday that killed a senior leader of the Islamic State militant group and captured his wife, also thought to be a member of the organization, U.S. officials said. The Pentagon said early on Saturday that the military conducted an operation on the ground in Al-Amr in the eastern region of the country to capture the leader, identified as Abu Sayyaf, and his wife, Umm Sayyaf. The mission represented a rare example of U.S. forces conducting an operational maneuver on the ground in Syria. Officials said Abu Sayyaf helped direct the terrorist organization’s illicit oil, gas and some financial operations. During the mission, Mr. Sayyaf “engaged U.S. forces” and was killed, the Pentagon said in a brief statement. Special Operations forces then captured Umm Sayyaf, the statement said. No American personnel were injured, the Defense Department said. Officials said Abu Sayyaf helped direct the terrorist organization’s illicit oil, gas and some financial operations.
http://www.wsj.com/articles/u-s-special-forces-kill-senior-isis-leader-in-syria-capture-wife-1431780812 http://www.defense.gov/news/newsarticle.aspx?id=128832
At some point, it's going to be where we have no choice but to invade because we're already there. At least this asshole has been taken out of the equation, though.
There's a group of people you don't want stopping by to say hello at your house. US Special Forces.
At some point, it's going to be where we have no choice but to invade because we're already there. You know that those spec ops are really top notch, when they are all the way behind ISIS lines and still manage to get out of the whole place.
Every time a "top commander" or whatever is taken out, they'll have 10 guys ready to replace him.
When I first read this I was unsurprised that a person of this profile became a target of spec ops from the US and figured he got what he deserved. But then it occured that this is literal evidence that if you are a big enough problem to the United states that they will assassinate you and kidnap your family. At one end I like to reassure myself they only do it to people who are bad and deserve it. But at the other I am kind of pessimistic at believing that every person whos an obstacle to the United states is a bad person or even has done bad things. Scary thought.
Every time a "top commander" or whatever is taken out, they'll have 10 guys ready to replace him.
And they might not be as competent bla bla bla Does this really need to be posted every time?
At some point, it's going to be where we have no choice but to invade because we're already there. At least this asshole has been taken out of the equation, though.
An invasion followed by an occupation would if anything make the situation worse. And how far would the US go, do they topple Assad? How much time and money will be spent rooting out ISIL? Which opposition groups do they back? What about the Kurds? Will the country be partitioned? No one will help the US in any substantial way so virtually all of the heavy lifting will be done by American forces and paid for with American money. Also keep in mind this civil war/rebellion/religious war has been raging for three years. There are battle hardened veterans on every side of the conflict, the US would not have an easy time waltzing into Syria like they did in Iraq in 2003. I would also be willing to bet many ISIL commanders cut their teeth in Iraq or were trained by people who fought the US in Iraq. That said I don't think it will happen, people seem content with this kind of strategy by the US. No one is clamoring for that kind of US intervention, and Obama doesn't want his legacy to be the guy who mired the US in another ME war.
I think with all sides using chemical weapons, The Us does has the legal precedent to invade. However I still stand by my previous notion. Wait till a winner emerges then go in. Picking a side will be a mistake. The out come should be how it was done to Japan or Germany after ww2. As for Assad? He getting beat down by the radicals. He won't be in power much longer. As for innocent civilians? Umm once America enters this mosh pit, there will be no innocents. It will be total war. There will be genocide. It will be either us or them.
Every time a "top commander" or whatever is taken out, they'll have 10 guys ready to replace him.
It can create a temporary power vacuum; this can change the rate of their demise.
Every time a "top commander" or whatever is taken out, they'll have 10 guys ready to replace him.
He was their leader of finance, oil & gas operations. You can cut off the head of a snake and replace it, but a person with finance and business skill is an intangible asset to an organization. Not easily replaced unless there's another oil and gas expert that's also a radical militant.
this great and all but half the world has been committed to another decade of war and the iraqi government is still losing ground and pessimism etc
Every time a "top commander" or whatever is taken out, they'll have 10 guys ready to replace him.
this argument is so fucking stupid it hurts.

What was that about no troops on the ground again?
and his wife, Umm Sayyaf.
US Special Forces: Tell me your name Wife: Umm....... Sayyaf
Every time a "top commander" or whatever is taken out, they'll have 10 guys ready to replace him.
If someone took out our president we have a long list of people ready to replace him. Does that mean losing the president wouldn't be a tragic and very damaging event? hell no.

Like, don't be a leader of massive terrorist cell that mutilates and kills a enormous number of innocent civilians and you should probably be fine.
What was that about no troops on the ground again?
They said no BOOTS on the ground, Special Ops guys wear hiking shoes
There's a group of people you don't want stopping by to say hello at your house. US Special Forces.
Pfft what are you saying, I'd love that shit. Get some stakes on, get some beer and have some serious tactical drunk-ops fun
Every time a "top commander" or whatever is taken out, they'll have 10 guys ready to replace him.
heil hydra
At some point, it's going to be where we have no choice but to invade because we're already there. At least this asshole has been taken out of the equation, though.
How about no? I'd like to spend at least ten years of my adult life with my country not currently engaged in a full scale military invasion of some random third-world shithole on the false pretense of 'stopping' terrorists, okay? So far I haven't spent a single day of my adult life, nor my adolescence, under such conditions, and it's a bit frustrating to say the least.
Every time a "top commander" or whatever is taken out, they'll have 10 guys ready to replace him.
ISIS is not hydra
What if Top ISIS Commander was not kill?
What was that about no troops on the ground again?
I think it's because the guy is in the Philippines.
