A federal judge threw out Oregon's same-sex marriage ban Monday, marking the 13th legal victory for gay marriage advocates since the U.S. Supreme Court last year overturned part of a federal ban.
State officials earlier refused to defend Oregon's voter-approved ban and said they wouldn't appeal.
The National Organization for Marriage sought to intervene, but both U.S. District Judge Michael McShane in Eugene and a federal appeals court rejected its attempts to argue in favor of the ban.
Many county clerks in the state began carrying out same-sex marriages almost immediately after Monday's ruling, as jubilant couples rushed to tie the knot.

Couples lined up outside Portland metro area courthouses Monday started getting their marriage licenses just after noon, when U.S. District Judge Michael McShane ruled an Oregon ban on same-sex marriage unconstitutional.
Officials in Multnomah, Clackamas and Washington counties were prepared to begin issuing the licenses immediately following the ruling. Click for the full text of the ruling (PDF)
"I'm not worried or concerned or nervous about it," said Shilpi Banerjee, who had lined up with her partner outside Multnomah County headquarters early Monday morning. "It's just an idea whose time has come."
When the ruling was issued, they got their license within minutes. They planned to have a ceremony Monday evening.
And wouldn't you know it, the Prop-H8 Machine, the National Organization for Marriage could not stop trying to jam their dick into the works. But, bless him, Judge McShane wasn't having any of it.
Just last week, McShane denied a request from the National Organization for Marriage to intervene in the lawsuit. Monday morning he denied the group's motion to stay the decision.
TL;DR: Gay marriage is legal in Oregon now!
As a resident of Oregon, it's disappointing and downright weird that it even took us this long.
My state did good.
Pretty awesome how judges in US states are repealing all these laws, shouldn't take too long for most of America to accept same sex marriage
Dammit, accidentally read the title without the 'ban' and got sad.
At least it's good news instead. Hooray for Oregon!

There are lawsuits in basically every state; the way these lawsuits are unfolding are with these federal judges throwing out the bans. It takes time for everything to work through the federal system, but it's only a matter of time. Public support has shifted to >50% in a fast inversion of opinion over the last decade, it's insane and awesome.
Alaska got hit with a lawsuit against its state ban earlier this month, and it's likely going to fall to the federal status quo (such as it is, now) just like the others. Once it does, that'll make the entire coastline from Alaska to the Mexican border a same-sex marriage zone.

Thanks for doing well by good people then. I hope to move there sometime.
Thank you Judge for doing the right thing.

Well, at least we're state number 18 instead of state number 50 to allow same-sex marriage. There are still 32 states worse than us.
Nothing is going to stop the gay train now

whoa, let's be clear, there are 49 states worse than us, it just so happens that 18 of them decided to allow same-sex marriage before we got around to it

let's agree to disagree and just settle for the pacific northwest being the best region in the country, because i will never concede the #1 spot to a goddamn washingtonian
I went to Seattle once and the monorail was broken so we're still better
Just remember that BC is bigger and on top of both of you.
Why of course I live in BC.
but u see, the real winner here has something legalized that the rest of you don't
