Interesting video from TotalBiscuit.
I completely agree with the "Pre-order rewards" bullshit.
I saw this with Company of Heroes 2 on Steam, and thought it was ridiculous. I checked THQ's store, you get all that shit + more if you preorder from them (minus the TF2 hats, but if you preorder a game for that, god help you).
Also, I like waiting to actually buy a game than preordering because if I preorder it, I have it sitting in the back of my mind knowing that shit I gotta wait for this game I threw money on already!
I remember when i pre-ordered Halo Reach, Gamestop said youll get all this exclusive shit! Then when i get home everybody has all of the exclusive stuff. So, no more pre-ordering for me.
I don't really read reviews before I go out and buy a game or see a movie. I know what I want.
Also this guy sure can talk a lot about how he didn't spend money.
I don't think I've ever pre-ordered a game, I've typically always waited to see peoples opinions on new releases.
He's saying what every smart gamer has been saying for years now.
I guess it just took a major person on youtube to say it.
Surprised he didn't mention anything from blackops, CoD, or -much- from BF3.

That's literally all he can do. Talk and talk and talk and talk...
It doesn't help he is extremely opinionated and pretty much refuses to look at it from any perspective but his own. Yeah some pre-order bonuses aren't exactly ethical, but a majority of them aren't content "removed from the game", the content could very well have been developed specifically with that use in mind, day 1 DLC type content could have been developed while the game was being mastered and printed. It's not a black and white thing like he presents it at all.
And talk and talk and talk...
I only preorder if I know for sure I'll like the game
For example sim city 5 or portal 2
Only game I've ever preordered was red orchestra 2 and that was because it gave me early beta access so I could start playing the game like right away.

Also does the potato sack count as a preorder? I guess that too.
I pre-order in pretty specific circumstances. For example I always pre-order Atlus games because, for one, they always have excellent bonuses (soundtrack, artbook, etc), and two, Atlus rarely reprints their games, so if you miss out on the first shipment, you're screwed.
How does the gaming journalism industry even let themselves get pushed around by publishers and hold their reviews until the game comes out? Like what is the purpose of getting premium VIP early access to games if you're not gonna post your review until whenever the publisher says you can do so, anyway?

because the gaming journalism industry is fucking dumb
I couldn't agree more with TB.
The last time I got ripped off like this was with Brink. Here was a game that showed every sign that it would be good, it had a semi reputable developer, great trailers, a big competitive scene backing it up and every interview was positive up until release.
I don't need to tell you how fucking terrible Brink was on release.
After that I promised to myself I would never pre-order another game without at least playing some beta or demo.
And here's a fun fucking fact, all those pre-order bonuses? PIRATES CAN GET ALL OF THEM FOR FREE.
Way to fuck over your customers that pay their hard earned money. People who cheat the system end up getting a better overall experience.

Publishers know their games will sell even without journalists reviewing them, the reviewers don't pay for their copies of the game, and sometimes get whisked away to fancy retreats by publishers for presentations (full board VIP shit). If they stop doing as publishers ask, them they lose any bonuses publishers give them and may even have to start requesting copies of games and paying for them. As a reviewer you don't really want that. It's good money to listen to publishers.
i pre-ordered nomoreheroes2 cus i got $20 off with a pre-order
best pre-order bonus ever
Last 2 games I preordered turned out to be shit, I am not preordering again.

so, money
another reason the game journalism industry is barely any of those words
I preordered Duke Nukem Forever
Never again... though the pre-order was the balls of steel edition at the least the stuff was cool.

When it comes to COD or Battlefield you know that you are getting fairly solid gameplay every time, while its not new it is fairly decent. Whereas in The WarZ and Aliens you don't know what you are getting because there hasn't been any previous titles that were similar to others, in the WarZ's case you had no idea of its gameplay at all outside of the handpicked footage and images the devs released.
Diablo 3 :C
Pre-Ordered the New Vegas Ultimate Edition. So much fucking swag for only $70 it was worth it ten times over.
What about Crowdfunding?
The last games I've preordered were Rock Band 3, LittleBigPlanet 2, and Grand Theft Auto V. With the exception of GTA V (since it's not out :v:) I don't really regret these or other past preorders. I generally only preorder if I know for a fact that I'll like it.
[editline]12th February 2013[/editline]
Also I never really buy new games or PC since I don't have a good PC.
Games I've preordered:
Starcraft 2 WoL
Starcraft 2 Heart of the Swarm Collectors (I love Starcraft 2 WoL, so I can't possibly be disappointed by the same game/continued story)
Mass Effect 3 Collectors (Loved ME1 and ME2, wasn't impressed by the collectors bonuses but I felt the company deserved the money...I was disappointed in many ways but I don't regret my purchase)
Halo 4 Collectors (Love Halo, collectors wasnt great but I definitely will continue to support the Halo franchise)
Skyrim Collectors (Oblivion was fun, and Skyrim looked bad ass. All the stuff they showed blew my mind! The collectors was super expensive and probably the dumbest pre-order i've ever made, but I still dont regret it, just maybe the cost)
Pokemon White 2 (same game over and over again, I'm already okay with that so I don't give a damn, pokemon is fun.)
Catherine Collectors (regret this entirely. i learned after this to do research before I invest in collectors and pre-orders)
I've pre-ordered a lot and was mostly happy with doing so. but there are times when I've be disappointed.
In response to embargoes, they're important so that journalists don't rush shitty reviews to be first and get a lot of hits. The problem's when they're too close to launch and players can't have informed opinions from them. http://penny-arcade.com/report/editorial-article/the-hows-whys-and-dirty-secrets-of-review-game-embargoes-a-guide-to-what-it
What about Crowdfunding?
TB has said his opinion over twitter that it's different since it's funding and the game can't be made without it, whereas a bad game already exists.
I barely pre order because they usually cost alot of extra money I can't afford.
Bioshock Infinite was the exception because it's just all pointing to look very good. I think the pre order bonuses are ok, you get a free flash game that's fun and rewards you with useful ingame bonuses and backstory, and if you get the songbird edition you'd get that kickass Songbird Statue.
But I still agree with TB all the way, especially about steam and refunds. It's the only thing that makes me actually hate Valve, is that I cannot refund a game if I either pre bought it, or bought it and didn't like it.
I paid $10 for the Battlefield 3 preorder reservation because I absolutely love Battlefield 2. I played the BF3 beta and I was disappointed. I never went to the store to pick the game up.
The only game I regret pre-ordering was Ninja Gaiden 3...didn't help that I was a sucker to get the full package that came with the soundtrack, DOA5 Alpha demo, some figures, and an artbook for $125.
Now never again, do I pre-order games unless I really think the game is going to be good.
I got suckered into a BRINK preorder and have never preordered since then
Only thing I've ever pre-ordered was Portal 2. :v:
