• DirectX12 not coming to Windows 7/8
Our roving reporter at the big Windows 10 event in Redmond is currently playing with Microsoft’s newly-announced holo-goggles, more on which soon, but she has been able to send back to useful bonus info about Win 10 and games in the meantime – including whether DirectX 12 is exclusive to the new OS, how this ‘upgrade to Win 10 free for a year’ offer works and whether there’ll be keyboard/mouse support for streamed Xbox One games. So DirectX 12 will, we’re told, only work with Windows 10. That’s a bummer for people who don’t want to upgrade from Win 7 or 8, but sugaring that pill slightly is the newly-revealed free upgrade to Win 10. But it’s only free if you upgrade during the first year following Win 10’s launch. As far as our correspondent has been able to establish, so long as you upgrade within that first year, Win 10 is yours for free forever, rather than that it starts shouting at you to pay a year later. Update: Microsoft have explained the upgrade offer a little more here.
In my opinion, it's "Eh, who cares?" It's free for anyone that owns Windows 7/8 for the first year anyways.
Well I don't have a DirectX 12 card so this doesn't really affect me nor would I care about it unless I got one. 750 ti master race.
Your card is a DX12 card.
DirectX 12 is coming to all Fermi, Kepler, and Maxwell GPUs - so your GTX Titan is compatible! http://nvda.ly/HIT6O
What's new with DX12 exactly? From what I gather it's DX11 that isn't shitty.
In my opinion, it's "Eh, who cares?" It's free for anyone that owns Windows 7/8 for the first year anyways.
Exactly, but people will whine anyway. Please sign my DirectX12 to WindowsXP petition, stop letting M$ get away with this!
Considering the upgrade to Windows 10 is free for 7/8/8.1 users, I don't think this is nearly as much of an issue as it was in the past.
Giving that Win10 is free, this shouldnt be that big of a bummer for people.
I'm surprised 8 is being left out, since it's only a couple of years old. Oh well, 10 is free for 7 users so I won't be left out as soon as I stop being lazy and move from Vista on my desktop.
Well, if this is anything like the Windows Vista and DX10 situation, someone's gonna end up porting it to Win8 and Win7 anyway.
What's new with DX12 exactly? From what I gather it's DX11 that isn't shitty.
It has something similar to ATi's Mantel
AKA 'Let's twist gamer's arms and force them onto Windows 10 whether they want it or not.' Thankfully it will be many years before games adopt DX12. Consoles will most likely dictate nothing newer than 11 sees any widespread adoption this gen just as they did last gen with DX9.

Not a big thing since people can convert to windows 10 for free i guess.
who cares, nothing is going to be using DirectX12 for a good year or two. and besides, games will probably still support dx9+ like they have for years now - the features of dx12 really don't warrant enough for an os upgrade.
It's more a thing about console GPUs than dev cycles. So long as console GPUs do not support the new API most PC games will remain backwards compatible, if not outright not supporting the new API. We saw it last gen with games released after the next gen announcements still supporting DX9 because they were coded for 360/PS3 first and ported over. That practice isn't going to change anytime soon, so whatever the XBone and PS-4 GPU supports is going to be the standard in PC gaming for the life of this console gen.
But the big question is can it play Minecraft with 300+ mods installed? After all, Minecraft is part of the Microsoft fold now
AKA 'Let's twist gamer's arms and force them onto Windows 10 whether they want it or not.'
Because keeping a version of DirectX that won't be fully utilized for years and is entirely optional for them to use exclusive to your new OS is 'forcing gamers' to upgrade to Windows 10. Seriously?
Giving that Win10 is free, this shouldnt be that big of a bummer for people.
Well, I think that entirely depends on what horseshit they cram into Windows 10.
Great, Microsoft is back to their old trick of using another incremental DirectX version to coerce people into adopting yet another version of Windows. I remember when they were using DX10 (I think) to force people into Vista so they could play Halo 2...
Halo 2 is dx9.
it was Vista exclusive though, and so was DX10 (until Win7 came out)
Halo 2 didn't even use DX10. There are cracks to let you play it on XP. Anyway, are 8 and 8.1 considered different OS'? I really really doubt it but no mention of 8.1 so MAYBE it'll support 8.1. Once again I highly doubt it
Yeahhh i'm still not ugprading yet, W10 just seems like it has a fuck load of gimmicky shit i'd have to spend the first day hunting down and uninstalling, i'm also reserved on how much of a resource hog it could possibly be. Going to wait to see what DX12 could possibly bring first.
who cares, nothing is going to be using DirectX12 for a good year or two. and besides, games will probably still support dx9+ like they have for years now - the features of dx12 really don't warrant enough for an os upgrade.
people who don't want to use w10?
I'm loving the anguish some people have over having to upgrade to a free version of windows(pending you're not still living in the world of Vista or XP) for a bonus feature. Oh how horrible that is. Not really it's more or less free
it was Vista exclusive though,
You can play it on XP, 7 and even 8 or 8.1 Anyway, there are hardly going to be any games using DX12.
You can play it on XP, 7 and even 8 or 8.1
you had to patch the game to run on XP, and windows 7 and beyond support is just a given
people who don't want to use w10?
nobody owes those people new stuff if they don't want to upgrade to new stuff for new stuff
Can I upgrade to Windows 10 without erasing all of my shit? Because I just formatted, and this is sad news.
Can I upgrade to Windows 10 without erasing all of my shit? Because I just formatted, and this is sad news.
I assume you'll be able to from W8. Personally, I prefer going for a clean install if I've got the time.
I assume you'll be able to from W8. Personally, I prefer going for a clean install if I've got the time.
So not 7? It's supposed to be a free upgrade from both from what I understood.
So not 7? It's supposed to be a free upgrade from both from what I understood.
To be honest, I don't know. Though I think it's relatively safe to assume that since you could upgrade to 8 without losing your stuff, you can probably do it for 10 too.
