He brings up great points.
YouTube is a well run site managed by intelligent people

It's like Google shunted off all of their incompetent employees into the Youtube department.
It's pretty obvious that they've basically been trying to convert it into Google Play 2 in all but name anyway.
How does this content ID system he's talking about even works? I have troubles wrapping my head around that.
How does this content ID system he's talking about even works? I have troubles wrapping my head around that.
I think that it has a database full of various copyrighted material and it scans videos for snippets of audio or visual material contained within that copyright. If it finds a match of any size, it flags it.

Here's the low down.

Angry Joe is right about this and all, but I think he ought to cool down and change it up a little bit.
I want a twenty minute video by him about puppies in which he rants about how cute and cuddly and fun they are very calmly and happily.
Edit: oh god it was a joke

No way man. Angry Joe is angry, and it's nice to see him REALLY be angry about something that is truly evil that affects a lot of people.
so has youtube said anything about everyone hating this new system?
[editline]12th December 2013[/editline]
or are they just ignoring them like always?

I imagine that it'd be pretty hard to be happy about the fact that everything you have worked on for the past 4 years is being stripped away from you within seconds.

Here's his explanation of what's happening right now and what AJ is talking about

are they really ruining their first source of income for people? gaming channels are their most demanded content, pewdiepie, angry joe, etc, etc... they really think they will keep going with this new conditions? suddenly taking rights for all the material in there is not going to "pay off" for the time they havent gotten the money of their past videos, its going to fuck up any future work they make and stop the whole channel from existing. What the fuck, why, how, did they suddenly get replaced by monkeys or what?
so stupid, god.
What the fuck, why, how, did they suddenly get replaced by monkeys or what?
Suddenly? They've been making stupid moves like this since google bought youtube.
so has youtube said anything about everyone hating this new system?

Just like with the Google+ fiasco, they've said absolutely fuck all. They're completely oblivious to the feedback.
Suddenly? They've been making stupid moves like this since google bought youtube.
then the monkeys got even more stupid somehow
It's like Youtube is being run by a group of incompetent monkeys and the team of highly trained monkeys that usually fix the shit the incompetent monkeys cause are nowhere to be found :(
There's talk going around that the new system was put in place to mesh with the stricter rules in the Trans-Pacific Partnership.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trans-Pacific_Partnership
Adress the sess was live about this youtube content id matching.
And after it ended like 10-20 min after you have angryjoe going on twiter
"Joe Vargas ‏@AngryJoeShow
..WHAT THE FUCK @YOUTUBE Nearly all of my videos at 1 million views or above have been flagged & matched. OH HELL NO. You will NOT do this!"

Joe actually came close to tears a few times in this video with how incredibly mad he was about this.
I'm actually quite active in his community (AJSA gaming) and he came onto the TS and talked to a few of us about it, and was really emotional. He feels like if he loses this then this community which he has put hundreds and hundreds of dollars in to creating (it's been up for a little over a month) will have to be disbanded because he won't be able to afford it without his youtube income. Was pretty difficult listening to him talk about how much work he's put into this shit and to potentially have it flushed down the toilet like it's nothing
This sucks so much. His actions are so visceral and absolutely moving, you just can't help but feel bad for those who make good content and bring out really good and entertaining videos.
I feel so bad for the guy. I was never the biggest fan of his videos but god damn, 4 years of work gone in a heartbeat after having quit his job to devote all of his time to something that's being taken away from him.
Man, it never sank in that this is his Job, this is like someone removing your future checks, and therefore, your future dinner...
Man, it never sank in that this is his Job, this is like someone removing your future checks, and therefore, your future dinner...
I wish more people would see this more frequently. It really bothers me when people say "Get a real job" or "YouTube isn't a real job".
What in the fuck man...
The more you see Angry Joes rants, the more I happen to respect the guy since he brings up brilliant point after brilliant point. He sounds like a pretty decent guy who really doesn't deserve this.
There needs to be some sort of alternative, seriously. This will bite all of us in the ass, regardless of what we do in YouTube. This is just ridiculous...
Competitors now have a huge opportunity, it would be stupid for them not to take it.
I'm still surprised that no one has even tried starting up a new site yet.
I'm still surprised that no one has even tried starting up a new site yet.
Very few people have the absolutely breadth of resources necessary to attempt this task in this day and age. Only a few people like Elon Musk might be able to and he'd rather continue to revolutionize society offline. And only a few corporations like Apple or Microsoft could, but that's arguably no better.

yeah, pretty sure only a few would actually be able to pull it off. what I meant was that I'm surprised that no one has even tried, considering youtube has a gigantic userbase with a lot of unsatisfied people. well, there might be people out there who has launched some alternatives (which would obviously crumble if they ever became popular) but those are probably not known I guess
The current situation sucks for everyone, but it's especially difficult hearing about it from Joe who you can just hear is emotionally charged in all sorts of way. Anger, sadness, panic, it's all on display.
I'm still surprised that no one has even tried starting up a new site yet.
Well, people come to YouTube to watch videos. YouTube has aaaall the videos. Without watchers, nobody bothers to join the service to upload videos, etc.
Unless you find yourself a target audience focus (vimeo) or special feature (twitch) I imagine it's difficult to make yourself a name out there. Then again, maybe this controversy could give you the needed publicity, if those that are currently ranting about YouTube would collectively support this alternative.
I said it elsewhere, but if twitch had YouTube's wealth of content, I'd go there and never look back.
I still say if you illegally take down something for copyright reasons, even if you own the copyright.
you should lose the rights, in the same way that if you drive illegally in your own car you lose the car and your license.
[editline]12th December 2013[/editline]
and seriously, polaris has pewdiepie and a lot of the biggest youtubers, if they got them to move over to blip then there is 0 argument saying the viewerbase wouldnt move over.
it would take one video from their channel saying "i'm moving to this other site" and most of the fanbase, if not all would move over
There's actually quite a few people considering such alternatives as well as self-governed websites in the style of That Guy With The Glasses, just all about Polaris or whatever network they've created by now.

Twitter's full of anger and panic and desperation as well. Saddening to see this mess.
Also, quite a few publishers are actually reaching out to people to remove those false copyright claims, including Blizzard, Capcom, UbiSoft and Deep Silver.
Deep Silver international community manager Maurice Tan wrote, "If you are a YouTuber & get copyright claims on a walkthrough/LP of Deep Silver games, let me know. Especially if the claim is not from us."
Also apparently Machinima got caught off guard as well. Oh boy.
Someone had the idea where YT should setup a system where false claims result in a suspension of the claimers right to claim any longer for a period of time.
Of course this will never happen, it's contentID, not active claiming. And YT is in the market to appease copyright holders, or those that claim it. There will always be people looking to make money on YT, I don't think youtube will run out. Not that I'm defending YT, but right now the amount of people who would likely boycott doesn't likely affect them that much overall.

Machinima only made statements about Google+ to me in the newsletter. They haven't said anything about the new contentID change though.
