Scientists develop 'holy grail' of vaccination - synthetic vaccines which don't use live viruses

"This work will have a broad and enduring impact on vaccine development, and the technology should be transferable to other viruses from the same family, such as poliovirus and hand-foot-and-mouth disease, a human virus which is currently endemic in South-East Asia."[/quote]
So it will never turn back into a live virus. Does that mean that the influenza vaccine, if prepared in this method, no longer has a 1:1,000,000 fatality rate, but is, in fact, completely benign? That would be cool.

influenza has a low fatality rate anyways.
it's probably better news for more deadly viruses(smallpox, polio?) where if the viruses come back alive and actually infect you it's much more serious.

Actually, they`ve used a "re-programmed" retrovirus to alter DNA and thus eradicate cancer.
As the article says, a synthetic vaccine would at best have no chance of reverting to infectious form.
Then again, those darn viruses have a habit of mutating with every host.
This vaccine is basically an empty shell of a virus, without the RNA that makes it infectious. It's like having a stuffed lion rather than a tranquillised one to aid in the recognition of lions.

Apart from the fact he's quite obviously joking and your autism won't allow you to process that...
Scientists aren't infallible, they are people too. Fuck ups have happened before and well within your lifetime, nothing as dramatic or ridiculous as a zombie virus, but fuck ups none the less.
People questioning the safety of certain things is good.
