The time of writing obscene amounts in a short amount of time has come again, friends.

So what is this and why should I care?
National Novel Writing Month 2013 is when thousands of writers across the globe all enter in the ultimate challenge: to write a fully fledged novel in just thirty days.
Many people are budding authors, but lack the motivation to sit down and write a novel, and eventually that novel could take years to write, if it even gets done at all. What NaNoWriMo does is remove the freedom of time. No more "it can wait", because you do that and you'll fail. NaNoWriMo teaches you good writing habits and gives you feeling of what it'd be like if you wished to be an author.

Writing an entire novel in a single month is impossible
Wrong! If you checked the last thread, you can see the facepuncher who wrote his novel in under 5 days. Go to him and tell him that it's impossible because he'd probably slap a copy of it in your face and tell you to read. It's far from impossible, just it requires willpower and determination. You only need to write around 1667 words a day to get to the total, but keeping that up, day after day is very difficult indeed.

Alright, I've decided that doing this is a good idea, when do I start?
Well, now really, it starts at the beginning of the day 1/11/13 and it's already coming to the end of that day. Sign up on the NaNoWriMo website as well so that you can keep track of your words per day and how much you need to do daily in order to succeed.
Who is doing this?
I shall compile a list of facepunchers who are taking part in the event below when I get some names
eurocracy
Kirbyfactor
Kwigg
alex525
elitehakor
KnightVista
Is there a reward?
Not really no, just the satisfaction of finishing a 50k novel which you can in turn edit and probably get published. But if you check the sponsor pages, you'll probably find a reward or two. For example, Createspace will offer you two free copies of your novel when you finish.
Can I cheat?
Are you 12?
What do I need?
Nothing at all! Just write on anything, even the walls if you have to.
Alright, I'll give it a shot.
I'm not that good of a writer at all, but is this open to people who just want to write for fun? I've never written a book or never even really wrote any small stories
I failed last year due to studies, but I'm going to try again. I find it to be rather enjoyable, even if you doesn't necessarily succeed.
I always hate how the NaNoWriMo falls on my exam periods. Even though love writing, i can't forsake my studies. What a shame.
Joining, first time writing maybe ill do good
Honest opinions on writing style? First time doing an excerpt for a soon to be novel, so i want your opinion.
Chapter 01
As I went downstairs to the kitchen, of course to make my least favorite meal of the day. Breakfast, I never liked the feeling i got after eating breakfast, almost like the pit in my stomach couldn't dare to digest whatever god-awful food i make, and shovel off my plate into my gaping mouth. Maybe there is a fancy scientific reason for it, maybe not. But when i was starting to make breakfast, I remembered I had to make breakfast for three, My mother and father were coming over to view the new apartment i had just rented. I stormed through the refrigerator, not only looking for a beverage, but some kind of food that could win my parents' trust, that I could cook, clean, and micromanage. Then an idea flooded through my mind, Who doesn't like pancakes? Well, except people allergic to the flour, eggs, and all the other ingredients in pancakes of course. But i do not have to worry about that, since I, nor my parents have any food allergies at all, only when the weather is very bad outside to i stifle the littlest sniffle. Then, the doorbell rang.
My Sci-Fi/Fantasy class is doing this, although it's the young writers version where the goal is 30k words
I'd love to one day spend like 10 solid hours just writing a stream of consciousness. However not right now I have college! Maybe next year.
Here we go, bro.
Riding home on the bus in the rain last night gave me some good ideas for a dystopian future kinda thing.
I might do this, but if I fail to meet the deadline for 30 days that's fine with me (I have pleeeeenty of work in the meantime, and really only get three days a week if I'm lucky) - I'll go until I feel I'm done.
I'm considering it. I write enough as it is.
I'm considering it but who is the author that wrote their book in under five days?

That would be NeonpieDFTBA who finished it all on November 4th.
I think that should be a world record, churning out a whole novel in four days.
Hit 5,000 words. Mine's coming along alright.
How do you guys manage it. Managing to get what you want out of your words and the story in such a condensed time frame I mean.

It's mostly writing whatever you think fast, rather than thinking of the perfects words, etc.
The best you can get done is a first draft for a 50k plus novel, so you don't have to make it perfect by the end of the month.
If anything, the point of the contest is to just get people to write rather than finish something. Since once you start something, sooner or later you are more likely to go back and work on it.
I only ask because I have ideas and something of a draft but am just unsure of where to go with these ideas.
I can't really tell if this is a good idea or not. Like, I think it's really awesome to see people writing and they'll definitely learn from it, but novels often take years to craft and I can't help but feel like a lot of stuff that gets produced here would feel rather rushed.

Only if the person keeps the mindset that they must complete a final draft level novel in 1 month. Anyone that has a shred of knowledge about writing would realize it simply isn't possible unless your 'novel' is extremely short.
Yes that kind of confused me as to the concept . Is it really helpful to have a draft made in this fashion?
So I'm doin this. If anyone's interested in my fail from last year, pm me.
I'm doin it this year! Good luck to everyone participating!
I've got a decent idea so I might do this, depending on if I have the time... I can probably churn out 6,000 words an hour if I really try :/

Anything is better than nothing, since you can work with that anything. Doesn't matter what it looks like by the end of the month, since it can be improved on.
I've been writing a total of 200 words since 1st November. I don't think I'll make it.
I'll be stopping by this thread periodically to help anyone that needs it, so feel free to post your writing stuff. Also, I know the main goal of NaNoWriMo is to shit out 50k words and not think about editing it or refining it at all until after it's complete, but seriously. SERIOUSLY worry more about the quality of your writing than trying to achieve a random goal of 50k words. The spirit of NaNoWriMo is full of good intentions, but when you just try to rush everything you end up with a mess that you'll never look at again.
So please, don't try to beat the goal for the sake of beating the goal. Use it to motivate you to express your lovely ideas, and come up with some cool stuff.
I am aware a lot of people doing this are amateurs, but don't feel bad about posting stuff you have and getting feedback from others. It is really the most important part of writing.

Thank you for being the first brave one to post part of their writing. The short response is that you are all over the place in terms of what you are trying to convey. You should not start your first sentence with a sentence fragment!! It will stop others from reading ASAP. Your punctuation is all over the place, so much so that I worry you are trying to mimic a jazz poet or something awfully Noir. But it's a story about making breakfast for your family, so if that is the story, keep the writing clear and straightforward. "As I went downstairs to the kitchen, of course to make my least favorite meal of the day. Breakfast," could become "I went downstairs to the kitchen to make my least favorite meal of the day: Breakfast." Other immediate issues are some strange phrases and fragments, like ", and shovel off my plate into my gaping mouth." which isn't needed in the original context, or "since I, nor my parents have any food allergies at all, only when the weather is very bad outside to i stifle the littlest sniffle." which jumps from the subject of food allergies to other allergies without a pause.
I do like what you have so far, however. The story is simple enough to start, and can easily build into some comedy-of-errors territory, or anything, really! Just don't trip yourself up on being too elaborate when the story doesn't call for it!
Anyway, I say again to everyone: feel free to post your work here as you work on it. I can offer some critiques for you, and I will promise not to break down in tears no matter how mangled or beautiful your stuff is. Also to anyone feeling overwhelmed but wanting to get their 50k in anyway, this post alone is 488 words long, so it ain't that tough! Good luck to you all.
Fuck; I'm down.
Currently doing this, up to about 6,525 words, and feeling pretty good about it.
