The Prime Minister's new parliamentary secretary, Ed Husic, has been subjected to a torrent of abuse online for being sworn in to his position with a Qur'an.
Mr Husic became Australia's first Muslim frontbencher on Monday when he was appointed to Kevin Rudd's new-look ministry as parliamentary secretary to the Prime Minister and parliamentary secretary for broadband.
"This is a wonderful day for multiculturalism, and everything it stands for in our country," Governor-General Quentin Bryce told Mr Husic during the swearing-in ceremony in Canberra on Monday.
Asked about his religion in 2010, he told the ABC: "If someone asks me, 'Are you Muslim?' I say yes. And then if someone says, 'Well do you pray and go to a mosque and do all the other things that are associated with the faith?' I say no.

It's Australia, Bill O'Reilly doesn't exist there.
In all likelyhood it's save me Crocodile Dundee.
A Bosniak who swears on the Qu'ran the same way any agnostic swears on the Bible, couldn't ask for more really.
Is there a better way to do the Oaths because with half of Parliament atheists it's just a bit awkward.

you guys dont get fox news out there??
no wonder youre letting the terrorists into office youre all fucked
What ever happened to separation of Church from State. Then again if someone were to be sworn into duty, I would prefer they keep religion out of this. If he want to sworn or affirm with any holy book, may it be the Quran, Bible or Torah, just let him be. As long as he can perform his duty a a minister .
People should stop caring which religion the person taking up office is in and look to where that man is capable of doing his job.
rip democracy
the terrorists have won
He should swear on the constitution.
Big deal. Why the fuck are people getting so worked up about someone being sworn in with a different book?
oh right it's Australia, racist bogan dickheads everywhere.
I've always wondered - in the nations where it's customary to swear on a holy book, can you for instance swear on the text of the constitution as well?
Kinda reminds me of this, the swearing on a different book thing I mean

Our constitution is not held to be some sort of sacred artifact like America's
So what the hell was he supposed to do? The Bible is sacred in Islam too, but would people prefer he swore an oath on a holy book he didn't believe in?

Although I guess it could be argued that he doesn't really believe in the Qu'ran either.
Swearing is bad.

Hello, thanks for playing I didn't read the title, don't pass go.
So what if a devout atheist becomes a front bencher? Do they get to swear their oath on A Brief History of Time?
