• Canada: "So long as you're torturing our citizens, mind asking them a few questions for us?"
Thousands of pages of secret files obtained by CBC reveal how Canada's police and intelligence service not only knew three Canadians were being tortured in Syrian jails in a post-Sept. 11 crackdown, but co-operated with Syrian officials in their interrogations.

Instead of pressing Syria for the release of Almalki, documents show Canada's ambassador to Damascus, Franco Pillarella, arranged for the RCMP's questions to be hand-delivered to the Syrian agency that was responsible for torturing him. Yep, heads ought to roll for this. Let's hope the people involved are punished accordingly.
269.1 (1) Every official, or every person acting at the instigation of or with the consent or acquiescence of an official, who inflicts torture on any other person is guilty of an indictable offence and liable to imprisonment for a term not exceeding fourteen years. Marginal note:Definitions (2) For the purposes of this section, official means (a) a peace officer, (b) a public officer, (c) a member of the Canadian Forces, or (d) any person who may exercise powers, pursuant to a law in force in a foreign state, that would, in Canada, be exercised by a person referred to in paragraph (a), (b), or (c), whether the person exercises powers in Canada or outside Canada; (fonctionnaire)
Greasy fuckin' cocksuckers. Frick, bud.
WHAT THE FUCK!? I had more respect for my home to know they wouldn't stoop to this low
I wonder if Wikileaks would be willing to crack down on Canada. Our ... Government could use a little more transparency.
Yep, heads ought to roll for this. Let's hope the people involved are punished accordingly.
nothing will be done about it because too few people will know or care a lot of people here in the US would support the US doing a thing like this purely because a victim's name was Abdullah Almalki maybe they'll win some money from their lawsuit, at least
WHAT THE FUCK!? I had more respect for my home to know they wouldn't stoop to this low
There was a crazy amount of political "doing what is right" after 9/11. We were not excluded in the wave of anti-terrorism measures that the US demanded we as a partner [del]should suck their cocks for[/del] enforce. I'd blame Harper for dragging it out (and he probably did considering how horrible of a person he was) but this would of also included the former Liberal government who eventually fell in a non-confidence vote.
Yep, heads ought to roll for this. Let's hope the people involved are punished accordingly.
Technically, according to that law, it is the torturer who is criminalized, not the official who sanctions it.
I wonder if Wikileaks would be willing to crack down on Canada. Our ... Government could use a little more transparency.
Canada ranks among the highest in government transparency. The government can't tell it's people absolutely everything they are doing.
Technically, according to that law, it is the torturer who is criminalized, not the official who sanctions it.
That's the problem. It's a loophole in our law meaning these jackasses are probably going to walk.
nah people, remember that the US is the bad country always.
That's so wrong, I've began to respect Canada's politics in comparison to here and the US. This kinda just killed that...
nah people, remember that the US is the bad country always.
The US has done a lot worse than this. And no one ever said the us were the only country capable of evil
Canada ranks among the highest in government transparency. The government can't tell it's people absolutely everything they are doing.
No, but there are a lot of things our government and bureaucracy could be more transparent with people about.
No, but there are a lot of things our government and bureaucracy could be more transparent with people about.
I agree but I also think that Canada allows businesses to not be so transparent more than the government being transparent itself.
That's so wrong, I've began to respect Canada's politics in comparison to here and the US. This kinda just killed that...
Honestly, Canadian politics are just as garbage. We've got a green eared pretty boy as our prime minister who was only elected by bribing the gov't funded news network CBC into heavily slanting news against the opposing party. When he came into power, he eliminated an important law created by the opposing party in their previous term that forced First Nations who receive billions of dollars in tax payer money to be transparent with where the money goes. The law was only put into place because of the mass amount of corruption where band chiefs would spend it all on themselves and leave everyone else they're responsible for in poverty. Business as usual around here..
