• Calling all facepunch guitar tech enthusiasts. (working on a new project)

I've posted this on multiple other forums, and I'm finding it hard to get some hard input on what I plan to do with this new project. I leave for my 6 month luthier class in may, so I figured it was time for a new project to tinker with. I picked up this ibby ax7 for 90 bucks cash from this really nice guy at a local shop around my house. I've never really been into seven strings and I had just got my check deposited, so I figured why not? Now I know the AX7 is an eyesore, and I know there are a lot of problems with it, but I ran the serial numbers and it's indeed a 1999 fuji-gen ax7 from japan. The neck feels fine, it's a bit of a challenge compared to the slim profile on my tele, but I'm liking having something different for a change. (I don't play a lot of metal or anything like that, but I find the low b really opens up a lot of doors tonally.) And honestly, after messing around on this thing, It's definitely got upgrade potential. I mean, atleast it's got a mahogany body, and the neck feels fine(which is one of the most important aspects to me.) Here's some pics. Old Pots: New 500k pots, Orange drop caps, Switchcraft jack, new bone nut blank (haven't carved it yet, been loaded with hours at work lately.): Okay, here's where it gets interesting. I want to purchase a wider tele bridge blank from callaham, and drill press the holes to match the Ibanez. I love the bridge on my tele and want to incorporate a 3 brass t-saddle design with this guitar and a single graphite saddle devoted to the low b. Here's some reference pics so you can get an idea of what I want to do. Ibby Bridge: My tele Bridge:(yes I'm aware the D string was out of place in this pic.) Anyone done a custom bridge like this before? I need all the info I can get, and like I said, I've been having trouble finding the right people to talk to. P.S. I just ordered some bareknucks last night, the coldsweat zebras. The ones I got are coil split ready, so I'm just drooling over this project. Haven't decided what Locking machines I want yet, Probably going to go with schallers. What do you guys think of Fiesta red? Thanks in advance for any input.
Japan made Ibby for $90 you bet that's a fucking awesome deal. Personally I'd go for a hipshot bridge or something, but it's your guitar.
Gave hipshot a call actually, USA customs referred me there, might have them send me a seven string tele style bridge blank. Waiting for a call back, then I'll see what happens. Anyhow thanks for the input, time to get back to work.
Are you going to strip down the paint and refinish? I think that shape really needs to be natural to look any good, because it's absolutely hideous right now :v:
I'm going to use paint stripper to pull off the poly, bondo some holes, and refinish with nitro. It's not my favorite shape, that's for sure, but I'm liking the fiesta red :)
No way, get a quilted/flamed top for it! It would look way more classy than a solid colour.
have you posted on sevenstring.org ? The name may sound misleading, but honestly, that forum is full of people who love to talk gear and mod guitars. It's probably the best forum to discuss custom building a guitar. I don't even have a seven string and I go there all the time for any guitar-related questions.

These guys are really great, and give some pretty knowledgable info. Yeah the sevenstring.org guys are great, I bought my 7 string RG from a guy on there.
Chuck a locking bridge and some humbuckers on that ibby and you automatically win at life.

It's so much better then ultimate-guitar.com when you need help/advice with something. I really need to post more on sevenstring.org, there's so much info on that site to soak up.
