Samsung Finally Reveals Why the Note 7 Kept Exploding
Well, it wasn’t the stylus.
After months of silence following a global recall of its Galaxy Note 7 smartphone last October, Samsung disclosed its lengthy findings as to what caused the device’s batteries to overheat and catch fire. Based on the company’s own investigation and independent scientific analysis of the issues by three consulting bodies, the overheating was caused by separate problems in batteries sourced from two different suppliers.
In the case of batteries sourced from Samsung SDI, there wasn’t enough room between the heat-sealed protective pouch around the battery and its internals. Because the phone was so slim, tight quarters placed stress on the upper right corner of each battery. In the worst scenarios, that caused electrodes inside each battery to crimp and come into contact, leading to thermal runaway and short circuiting.
In the case of batteries sourced from Amperex Technology Limited, some cells were missing insulation tape, and some batteries had sharp protrusions inside the cell that led to damage to the separator between the anode and cathode. The batteries also had thin separators in general, which increased the risks of separator damage and short circuiting.
The findings were announced after testing 200,000 devices and 30,000 batteries in a giant charging and recharging test facility built for the task. Samsung mobile communications chief D.J. Koh says a team of 700 company engineers conducted internal testing, and independent reviews of potential problems were carried out by UL, Exponent, and TÜV Rheinland.

moral of story stop making phones thin
So not only are ever-slimmer phones a terrible design decision, but they can actually be dangerous too.
Gives a whole new meaning to "bravery."
Of course the ONE article I actually want to read wants me to turn off adblock. Ain't happening brother.
Anyways, why do we need "slimmer" phones? I'd rather have a slightly wider phone then one that can overheat.
Seems it's what most people expected, they made shit way too thin.
I wonder if this will lead to laws that require a minimum space for phone internals?
Because ideally, that would be the solution to these problems in the future.
I don't think legal intervention is really necessary here. If we know that making phones ridiculously thin can lead to a massive lawsuits, industry-record recalls, and billions of dollars in lost profits, then manufacturers probably will either put more quality control time into thinner phones, or avoid them until battery technology catches up.
It wouldn't make sense to make a phone so thin that it can explode if someone else has done that before, right?
I honestly don't understand why they make phones so thin.
I mean, most people carry around leather wallets that are 6 times thicker than the phone, so don't you dare say "less pocket space".
moral of story stop making phones thin
They'll just take it as make the batteries extra smaller.

numbers look good to stockholders and unaware customers.
if you make a phone thicker than the last generation, its viewed like a step back

didn't look good afterwards did it
didn't look good afterwards did it
it did not, they kept playing with fire to look good and now they got burnt

damn it, I made a pun
Technology gets smaller over time
The problem isn't slim, its cutting corners to make things small.

On top of that, I'm probably not the only person who refuses to keep anything else in the same pocket to keep the phone from getting scratched.
moral of story stop making phones thin
Moral of the story is make phones powered by static electricity in the atmosphere.

Fuuuck i get nervous as hell when i put my phone in my back pocket and there are also coins in the pocket

It's a trend.
Phones are getting thinner, but also really fucking big for some reason. It's like running a steamroller over it, it flattens and widens.
While the idea of making technology smaller is great and all and can help in other fields other than consumer products, putting it to use in phones to make them ridiculously thin has never seemed to be the best idea. Not just phones, but other consumer electronics as well, like laptops and what have you.
Personally I can't stand it when phones are thin, I always put my phones in thick cases because they're so thin anymore I feel like it's going to snap in half at any second from the wind from my eyelids blinking hitting it too hard. Same with super thin laptops, while they're nice to look at, I'd rather have my expensive portable computer have decent structural integrity than feel like an oversized, hyper fragile floppy disk that I have to wrap in bubble wrap every time I travel with it.
Even if all these things are stronger than what they appear, it's more the feeling of it. They could be as strong as adamantium, but if it's thin enough it's still going to seem like rice paper, and thus, make me extremely uncomfortable even if I take great care of it.

Please no, laws limiting phone size would just get in the way of further innovation.

All of Samsung's flagships increased in thickness over the previous generation.
Note 5 -> Note 7
7.6mm -> 7.9mm (Battery capacity increased by 500mAh)
S6 -> S7
6.8mm -> 7.9mm (Battery capacity increased by 450mAh)
S6 Edge+ -> S7 Edge
6.9mm -> 7.7mm (Battery capacity increased by 600mAh)

This image is cursed.
Hopefully phones can start focusing on performance power and extra cool and useful features and less on being a fucking fashion statement.
It's nice when a phone looks good but people are overestimating their importance. Nobody actually cares about the little bright rectangle you keep fiddling with all day.

I guess it's easier to market "now EVEN THINNER" because you can actually see that, unlike better internals
Honestly tho, who cares about the thickness of your phone? Majority of people buy protective cases anyway to avoid scratching the screen.

Often you can adblock the "turn off adblock" overlays :v:

I don't think the majority of people do that.
Most phones I see don't have protective cases.

So having a thicker phone means you dont need to protect your screen?
So having a thicker phone means you dont need to protect your screen?
That is sometimes the case yes

A friend of mine has this phone, I strongly doubt any screen protection will make a difference.

I never intended to buy a smartphone until I saw this picture.
