Several thousand people have marched through Prague in the Czech capital's first "gay pride" festival.
Revellers in fancy dress waved rainbow flags and blew whistles as they marched through the city centre.
Some 300 police guarded the colourful event, which had stoked controversy and counter-marches.
Earlier this week, a top aide to conservative President Vaclav Klaus, Deputy Chancellor Petr Hajek, labelled gay people as deviants.
Mr Hajek criticised Prague Mayor Bohuslav Svoboda for supporting "deviant fellow citizens."
His comments provoked a joint statement in support of the five-day gay pride festival from the ambassadors of 13 Western nations, including the UK and US.
But their letter drew an angry response from Czech President Vaclav Klaus, who refused to distance himself from Mr Hajek. The deputy chancellor had previously drawn criticism for rejecting Darwinism and calling the dead al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden a "media fiction".
Vltava converts As Saturday's march went ahead in light drizzle, riot police held back dozens of far-right extremists who had gathered to shout abusive slogans.
The Czech Republic's Conservative Christian Democrats also held a peaceful counter-parade in support of traditional family values.
But the abuse and moist conditions did not dampen the party atmosphere, as marchers danced to music played from loudspeakers mounted on vans.
The march was to culminate in a series of concerts on an island in the Vltava river, as part of a five-day festival comprising some 80 events - concerts, films, seminars, exhibitions and parties - in 30 venues around the capital.
A gay pride march in the Czech Republic's second city Brno in 2008 ended in clashes.
Honestly I'd be pissed off if a bunch of people with rainbow clothing marched around blowing whistles and causing trouble, and even more so if their reason for doing so offended my beliefs, so I can definitely sympathize with the people doing counter marches.
One part of the article caught my eye, though:

Wow, really? I guess all the people he killed were actors. :v:

What about a straight pride march!
What about a straight pride march!
Were you too stupid to read the article, or did your eyes instantly fasten on "I think this is disruptive and stupid" and make you write "OMG OP HEIGHTS TEH HOMOS!!11"
People were, in fact, doing what were basically straight pride marches.
well this sounds nice.

I did read the article but I did not see anything about straight pride marches.
alright..............gay
Thanks god I am out of city. If I was at home, I would have hard time deciding between marching with the march and throwing bottles at them.
Gay pride marches probably do more to segregate gays than they do integrate them.

even though i'll get yelled at, i agree
marching around half naked doesn't seem to be the right way to gain political respect
By the way, what deputy cancellor said was disapproved by people in parties over the whole spectrum of our government, from left to right. It was a globally unpopular statement, and President stands up for him just because he is a stubborn old fuck. He is the one who, after being told that he would have to wait for scan to be able to enter Australian parliment turned around and walked away, and also the one who steals pens on official meetings.
This President.

You can't really have a float with a gay orgy going on on top of it.

thats my point
looking at gay people they look just like normal people because they ARE normal people
if they marched around just dressed up like normal people with signs to express that it's a gay pride parade,
people might start to realize that gay people are the same as everyone else, that you cant even tell the difference

i disagree one hundred percent
the only people who would form their opinion on human rights based on what a few people do in the streets were already homophobes anyway

yeah and those homophobes are voting against gay marriage
maybe if they acted like reasonable people homophobes would have less fuel for their fire of stupidity
you think marching around half naked and being indecent in public is going to help the gay agenda?

"gay agenda"
Okay, listen. Do you honestly believe that homophobes are going to stop being homophobes if gay people just stop doing these parades? You really think they'd be swayed by any reduction in these types of activities?

judging by the fact that you quoted me saying "gay agenda" i just want to make it clear that when i say gay agenda i just mean the ideals and purposes of people who are looking to advance the cause of gay rights, i.e. what agenda means. i don't mean anything negative like gays trying to turn straight people into gays or anything stupid like that :v:
i don't think gay people should stop doing parades, i think they should just behave like normal people during them, like my post above explains. i think demonstrating is great, but i think showing people that gays are normal people just like everyone else is a lot better than having a day to get half naked and be indecent in public all while clogging up the roads. if you act like fools when you beg for rights you're going to be pushing people that are on the fence about the situation away from your side, and add more fuel to the hate fire that homophobes are enjoying.

Which would be preferable?
Gay men and women who protested while acting like everyone else, or this:

No but acting like this just gives the homophobes ammunition to use against the normal gays who just want to live a normal life.

What do you mean they aren't "behaving like normal people"? Elaborate on this please. Now, there isn't too much media about this particular gay pride parade, I have an image here from the one in 2008 in Prague:

That's from San Francisco and that was specifically about drag queens, not gay pride. It's a "pride" parade, but not just gay pride.

no, that parade is a good example of what a pride parade should be
it seems like its american pride parades that are doing it wrong

That's perfectly fine, it's just when they go around in their under wear and do weird poses.

That was one photo from a San Francisco pride parade that wasn't just about homosexuality. The two aren't comparable.

no, absolutely not
there's never ever ever been a similar looking gay pride parade
absolutely not

Why does the whole "people in their underwear" thing offend you so much?
It makes gays look like complete fucking weirdos in the eyes of a lot of people, whereas the lack thereof does not
Why does the whole "people in their underwear" thing offend you so much?
so now you completely ignore your earlier point that this doesnt happen,
and go to "RUNNING AROUND IN FANCY COSTUMES HALF NUDE ISNT WEIRD"
good stuff
enforcing negative stereotypes about a group of people while protesting for more rights, genius
that whole "black rights" thing would have been resolved so much faster if they just ran around raping white women, stealing things and eating watermelon, right?
It makes gays look like complete fucking weirdos in the eyes of a lot of people, whereas the lack thereof does not
And them being "weirdos" should impact your tolerance of their lifestyle or sexual orientation because...?

I never said it doesn't happen, I said it as a whole doesn't categorize the gay rights movement, and using it against them to call them weird doesn't make you look any better.
