[t]http://i.imgur.com/7Z7Q48S.jpg[/t]
On 10 November 2016, Russian-language media reported that a rather bleak-looking Soviet-era star atop a building in the western Russian city of Voronezh had been a bit more visually cheerier — someone had repurposed it by painting it to resemble Patrick, a starfish character from the popular cartoon "SpongeBob SquarePants" According to Russia Today, and English-language Russian government-funded news site, the vandal could face 15 days in detention if caught.
Snopes is the best source right now, the rest of them are either in Russian or banned sources like Daily Mail or RT.

To the gulags... TBH all of these are massive cultural and historical heritage sites... dont fuck around with them... its like painting a smilie on the statue of liberty... just dont.
Say what you will but there's a certain irony in Soviet symbols being plastered with images of the Western Culture they hoped to avoid.
WWII memorial paintjob is bad but come on there are probably thousands of stars around ex-USSR
What do you mean its bad to dislodge a stone from the western of suffering, there are literally thousands of stones in this wall... why are all these jewish people trying to literally kill me right now i dont get it.
Reminds me of this:
Bulgarians love having fun with that monument [t]http://ichef-1.bbci.co.uk/news/624/media/images/73217000/jpg/_73217475_73215821.jpg[/t] [t]http://ichef-1.bbci.co.uk/news/624/media/images/73217000/jpg/_73217479_sofiapussyriot(5).jpg[/t] [t]http://ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/660/media/images/73215000/jpg/_73215817_73215816.jpg[/t]

This is nothing like tearing apart a monument.
They aren't removing the star, they aren't permanently damaging the star. Spraypaint is a bitch to take off of this structure, its probably going to be a professional crew thats going to have to clean this up... oh who am i kidding they are not going to spend a dime not in their pockets and eather leave it up like that or take it down and store it in a garage... nice, very nice...

Putting paint unto a painting is not equivalent to putting paint on a previously unpainted metal structure. I have not condoned the actions of the vandals, nor have I said that they shouldn't be punished if they are caught but to say that this is the equivalent of dismantling a historical and religious wall or painting over an artist's painting is ridiculous.

Seeing someone idolizing a Soviet statue so much makes me almost wanna throw up.

The Patrick Star thing is funny, the painting the war memorial though is a bit ehhh.
The Patrick Star thing is funny, the painting the war memorial though is a bit ehhh.
The memorial was put up in the center of Sofia to celebrate the Soviet Army as "liberators" of Bulgaria, when in reality it was the Soviet Union forcibly propping up the communist regime that destroyed this country and is almost directly responsible for Bulgaria being the poorest country in the EU today. The writing underneath in the first photo reads "в крак с времето", which roughly translates to "In pace with the times". The message is that while Bulgaria is a modern country, full of all the western goods and services that everyone else in the civilized world has access to, it's still just a coat of paint, hiding the ugly remains of the communist regime underneath. Every Bulgarian government and all the big political parties since the fall of the wall have had direct and indirect connections with the people in power during the regime. So on, it's not "ehhh", it was an amazing piece of work, but context is important.

It'll probably be pretty easy to remove
To the gulags... Are you a soft-hearted revisionist?

Vandalising a Soviet memorial in say, Volgograd, Saint Petersburg, or Kursk for example would be scummy.

Should we get rid of the creation of adam because the christian church was pretty vile at times? get rid of roman sculptures because they had slaves n stuff?

It can be removed.

W/E about the star, but no one should be defacing any WW2 memorials. Weather or not you think high or low of the post WW2 Bulgarian Soviet state, just remember A LOT of brave men and women died to liberate Eastern Europe from the Nazi's.
W/E about the star, but no one should be defacing any WW2 memorials. Weather or not you think high or low of the post WW2 Bulgarian Soviet state, just remember A LOT of brave men and women died to liberate Eastern Europe from the Nazi's.
I generally despise using terms such as "you westerners" and "you people" in this context as I believe Eastern Europeans for the most part to be heavily leaning towards western values and such, but this is where "you westerners" are always sorely mistaken. A lot of brave men and women died fighting a war for people who did not honor their sacrifice, be they Axis or Allied, but that is not where the story ended for us. While one tyrant was being booted out the door, another arguably much worse one was already busy planting itself in the Eastern European peoples' collective nightmares. A lot of innocent men and women died afterwards as well, you know - neither to liberate nor conquer. Millions of lives cut short by a paranoid, schizophrenic sociopath, supreme ruler of the Soviet Union, father Stalin, and the state sanctioned machinations of his power-drunk henchmen. Falling under soviet rule is without a doubt the darkest, costliest chapter in the history of most Eastern European nations. There was no great Red Army war of liberation from the yoke of Nazi oppression. There was only (in many cases literally) brother shooting at brother. There was no victory for us in this. We all lost the day tanks rolled down our highways and panicked families abandoned everything just to get on a fishing boat bound for Sweden or Finland.
No one is getting rid of anything, it's just paint, it's not actually destroying it or anything. It can be removed.
Its vandalism of cultural heritage... the paint will have to be scrubbed off damaging the metal.
Its vandalism of cultural heritage... the paint will have to be scrubbed off damaging the metal.
Paint is generally removed with non-corrosive stripping agents. The metal is fine. Vandalizing monuments is a shame, but painting a metal statue is about the least damaging thing you can do to one. [editline]16th November 2016[/editline] Removing paint from metal without damaging the metal is practically an industry itself. How do you think cars/planes/ships/structures are repainted without damaging them?
