"When people told told themselves their past though stories, explained their present through stories, foretold the future with stories... The best place by the fire, was kept for... THE STORYTELLER!" Back during the 80's the Jim Henson company created a short-lived TV series that was centered around re-telling fairy tales, using a combination of live-action and the Jim Henson company's signature puppet effects. The writing is wonderfully done and you can really get a sense of the age and timeless wonder of these old stories, many of which you may not have ever heard of before, but will enchant you nonetheless. The show's intro: John Hurt as "The Storyteller" Also known for being in: V for Vendetta, Hellboy 1 and 2, Alien, and the recent "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy". John Hurt, one of Britain's most prolific and beloved actors, played the role of the wise, aged Storyteller, living by himself with his dog. who would introduce the story and would narrate. He describes himself as "...A teller of stories, a weaver of dreams. I can dance, sing, and in the right weather, I can stand on my head!" Brian Henson as "The Dog" Also known for: Director on "The Muppets" movies, Chief puppeteer of Audrey II from "Little Shop of Horrors", Producer on "Dinosaurs" and "Farscape". The Dog is played by Jim Henson's son, Brian. The Dog is a bit lazy and sarcastic, and is usually more interested in food then listening to the Storyteller's stories, though he does always end up paying interest, and occasionally adding details to the story. He really hates cats, and is afraid of spiders. Michael Gambon as "The Storyteller" (Season 2, Greek myths) Also known for playing: Dumbledore from Harry Potter (From "Prisoner of Azkaban" forwards), The King's Speech as King George V, and as a voice actor in the upcoming game "Elder Scrolls Online". In the second season, a new storyteller was introduced, played by Irish actor Michael Gambon, who told Greek Myths. The Dog remained as the Storyteller's companion in this series, but the location was changed to the Labyrinth (From the Minotaur Myth). There were nine episodes to the main series, focusing on obscure legends and fairy tales from across Europe. THE STORIES- SEASON 1 -"Hans my Hedgehog" -"Fearnot" -"A Story Short" -"The Luck Child" -"The Soldier and Death" -"The True Bride" -"The Three Ravens" -"Sapsorrow" -"The Heartless Giant" SEASON 2 (Greek Myths) -"Daedalus and Icarus" -"Orpheus and Eurydice" -"Perseus and the Gorgon" -"Theseus and the Minotaur" THE GRAPHIC NOVEL American Comic book Company Archaia Studios Press collaborated with Jim Henson Studios to create a Graphic Novel, released in 2011, based off the Storyteller, with several brand new stories, one of which was based off of an unproduced episode from the original series. Several noteworthy artists from the industry helped in writing and drawing each tale. The book expanded outward to tales from China and Japan. Be sure to find the DVD if you can, as the quality is much better. Anyways, let's discuss this incredible show! I recently found the graphic novel at the local library and I've re-read it already! Some of the art seems a bit off, especially on the Chinese story of the Crane Wife, it's like a Deviantart-y anime style, which I really don't think suits the feel of the Storyteller at all. Most of the other stuff is great, though, and the stories themselves are still very interesting, so it's worth checking out. Also truth be told, I haven't watched all of the Greek Myths yet. I'll have to go back and borrow it from the Library again, I suppose.
