Ricky Gervais could become public enemy number one for some Hollywood stars following his controversial stint as host of the Golden Globes. The British funnyman wryly noted last week that he was determined to make sure he would never be asked to host the US film award show again, and it looks like he will get his wish after last night's ceremony. What Gervais said: He kicked off the bash sipping a beer, before noting, “It's going to be a night of partying and heavy drinking. Or, as Charlie Sheen calls it, breakfast'. He then went on to take a swipe at flop spy caper 'The Tourist': "It was a big year for 3D movies: 'Toy Story', 'Despicable Me', 'Tron'... Seems like everything this year was three-dimensional—except the characters in 'The Tourist'." "And I'd like to quash this ridiculous rumour going around that the only reason 'The Tourist' was nominated was so the Hollywood Foreign Press could hang out with Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie. That is rubbish. That is not the only reason. They also accepted bribes." He also aimed his sights at Scientology, joking, "Also not nominated: 'I Love You, Philip Morris'. Jim Carey and Ewan McGregor. Two heterosexual actors pretending to be gay. Sort of the complete opposite of some famous Scientologists then...My lawyers helped me with the wording of that joke." First reactions: Robert Downey Jr, who Gervais also made some scathing jokes about, later said during the show, “'Aside from the fact that it's been hugely mean-spirited with mildly sinister overtones, I'd say the vibe of the show is pretty good, wouldn't you? I think it's great to be funny. But it's better if you can do it without hurting people.” As for legendary movie producer Harvey Weinstein, he joked at his after show party, “Ricky Gervais will not make it out of town tonight. There are seven people that we've hired to kill him and deservedly so. Knowing that Ricky Gervais will never work again means a lot to me, I'm going to make sure of it.” And when asked if Gervais would ever host the Golden Globes again, president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, said simply, “No comment”. While his edgy jokes stunned the star-studded audience, some were less offended than others. Tom Hooper, director of 'The King's Speech', said, “LA is a careful town - my God he was unbelievable. I thought he was hilarious but will he ever present another award show again? I don't know but if he went out, he went out burning.” Even Paris Hilton gave Gervais a thumbs up, adding, “That's how it is at an awards show, they want to get some laughs.” Gervais to host next year's Oscars? We wouldn't hold our breath.
Source: http://uk.movies.yahoo.com/blog/article/123294/golden-globes-gervais-jokes-too-mean.html This is dumb. You should know that his humor is pretty crude. But its just humor, no need to take it so seriously. And I'm sure Johnny Depp can take the jokes in like a man.
“It's going to be a night of partying and heavy drinking. Or, as Charlie Sheen calls it, breakfast'.
That's hilarious.
Ricky Gervais is fantastic.
Ricky Gervais is awesome
I love Gervais.
Ricky Gervais is amazing.
Paris gave a thumbs up. Only because she was not joke fodder.
There is no too far.
You're not a good comedian if you don't get some bad reactions.
Oh come on, that guy is hilarious :v:
You're not a good comedian if you don't get some bad reactions.
You can't please everyone.
That was good.
Ricky Gervais took the piss out of celebrities? He's never done that before.
He's a comedian, and a brilliant one at that. He didn't go too far, and if you've got Ricky Gervais to host the Golden Globes, you'd expect him to pull some jokes like that anyway.
-s
... isn't he doing what all comedians do? ... make jokes?
Ricky Gervais took the piss out of celebrities? He's never done that before.
It's one thing to take the piss out of celebrities, it's another to take the piss at the friggin golden globe awards where the entire audience consists of those celebrities. This guy is fucking genius, massive props to the one who hired him to to this.
Hollywood's perspective: Ricky Gervais makes crude jokes about non-celebrities: Ricky Gervais makes crude jokes about celebrities:
I don't find Gervais funny at all any more. Why is he so popular in the United States? Has the US comedy scene just discovered the 'charm' of arrogance and sarcasm... 15 years after Gervais was actually relevant in his home country? His style of presentation here is like an even worse version of Jonathan Ross doing the BAFTAs or whatever other crappy awards shows he hosts.
This is exactly what all those stuck up "stars" need.
i like my gervais in moderation. he's a bit annoying in large doses, but this was just fucking hilarious.
British Funnyman
But he's not even fucking funny he's just a douche, that aside i must give him a thumbs up for this.
But he's not even fucking funny he's just a douche, that aside i must give him a thumbs up for this.
being a prick is usually pretty funny
But he's not even fucking funny he's just a douche.
Hello Charlie Sheen
Brilliant!
America! Y u no get english humor?
It's just American actors needing to laugh at themselves.
I like how pissy and angry the "Hollywood elite" get when jokes are made at their expense. I really think they seem to forget they aren't as important as they think they are. I can't believe how out of touch with reality and the outside world they are. With that said, Ricky's sendups were amazing. He was the best thing about that sham of an award show.
Even though this was really funny, making fun of a someone who had a very serious drug problem, like Robert Downey Jr., would piss some people off.
