Any programs listed within Windows' Programs and Features control panel
How does his help Valve in game development in any way? It just sounds like a ploy to collect as much information as they can to sell to data mining outfits.
Knowing what driver and shit most people have let's them optimize and stabilize the game significantly...
The hardware survey already collects driver information. The only information on what 3rd-party software that Valve should be collecting is perhaps what runs on startup so Valve can narrow down any incompatibilities. I won't be partaking in these surveys anymore. If it was any other company harvesting information like this there'd be controversy.
I won't be partaking in these surveys anymore.
:tinfoil: I don't have a problem with it. If this will make Steam and Valve's games better (through new outlets of integration) then fine by me.
I won't be partaking in these surveys anymore. If it was any other company harvesting information like this there'd be controversy.
But the question is, IS IT A BIG DEAL? Also, who knows what Valve is gonna do with the information. Maybe they'll detect anything that can compliments source (ex: GCFscape), or perhaps they're looking to expand their market somehow.
Guys, read Valve's privacy policy:
By using Valve's online sites and products, users agree that Valve may collect aggregate information, individual information, and personally identifiable information, as defined below. Valve may share aggregate information and individual information with other parties. Valve shall not share personally identifiable information with other parties, except as described in the policy below.
They're already selling this information. Why would you allow this?
How do you know they are selling this stuff? Do you know in how much trouble they could get in if people found out? Valve is not Google. Does it even matter if they do sell it? Either way nothing will affect you.
oh god valve is selling what software i use ummmmmmm somehow i just can't get riled up over this, especially if it's a voluntary survey.
Its Commensalism. One side gains and the other is unaffected.
Guys, read Valve's privacy policy: They're already selling this information. Why would you allow this?
I still don't see how this is a big deal to us. You're being an idiot by going off and saying that they're already selling our information on simply what software we use as if it's some big conspiracy. 1) You have no logic or evidence that Valve has been selling our information. 2) Valve only have access to our hardware/software information through voluntary surveys. Not our social security number, phone number, e-mail, or anything like that so they can spam us and steal our identity. 3) Even if they were selling it, it doesn't matter or affect us in any way. Persona/individual information is not being sold. Just because they see that x percentage of people have a certain program installed doesn't mean that our "privacy is being invaded." [editline]04:43AM[/editline] [release]The new software component of our survey helps us understand what else our customers are using their PCs to do, and as a result, what features we can deliver or leverage to make Steam and our games better. PC users, developers and manufacturers will no doubt also find this information useful, so we plan to publish these results and trends over time.[/release] oh shit oh shit i gotta call valve and demand privacy. [editline]04:46AM[/editline]
If it was any other company harvesting information like this there'd be controversy.
But it would only be "controversy" caused by fools who have no idea what they're talking about, and choose to make a big deal over something they shouldn't be getting involved in.
