The Indian Point nuclear plant will shut down by April 2021 under an agreement New York State reached this week with Entergy, the utility company that owns the facility in Westchester County, according to a person with direct knowledge of the deal.
Under the terms of the agreement, one of the two nuclear reactors at Indian Point will permanently cease operations by April 2020, while the other must be closed by April 2021. The shutdown has long been a priority for Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo, who — though supportive of upstate nuclear plants — has repeatedly called for shutting down Indian Point, which he says poses too great a risk to New York City, less than 30 miles to the south.
“Why you would allow Indian Point to continue to operate defies common sense, planning and basic sanity,” Mr. Cuomo told reporters in June.
Quite a setback for clean energy, when these things get shut down, what happens quite often is that is the lost energy gets made up for with coal/natural gas/oil. And they don't appear to have a solid plan yet.
Not that it shouldn't be shut down for safety. There's been incidents in the past

Will another be re-opened to surpass it?

I live about an hour for the plant and they're building a natural gas plant a couple miles from my house. Don't know if it is even in relation but at least it's something.

better than coal I guess
I feel like nuclear plants closing isn't talked about enough in DC. We aren't replacing them fast enough.

If it is the red tape won't be cleared until at least 2030 and protests will delay it further. You likely will not see it generating until at least 2035.
Misread.
Well, the 2022 goal for India is to increase the grid interactive renewable energy from 46,665 MW to 175,000 MW. With 60,000 MW from wind, 100,000 MW from solar, 10,000 MW from biomass power, and 5,000 MW from hydro. India has been making quite the push for renewable energy sources.
Indian Point is in New York State bud not India, in fact I live close to it. A fuckton of homes and businesses are gonna get affected because the governor has taken a stance against nuclear energy and instead wants to focus on solar, wind, and clean gas.

I remember hearing about a gas or oil line that was supposed to be built right by it but people were afraid of it becoming radioactive and exploding?! Honestly for a supposedly progressive state some of our leaders are dumbfucks
It's not being shut down due to age, it's being shut down because your moron of a Governor has a vendetta against it.
