Grand Theft Auto V finished as the best-selling video game of 2013.* To date, Grand Theft Auto V has sold-in more than 32.5 million units.
That's a LOT of units to move in four months of availability.
I did some rough averaging with the pricing of the three editions, assuming an average price of £60, this means that the game on its own has made Rockstar £1.95 BILLION/$3.18B.

Just for a bit of contrast here, Lucasfilm was bought recently by Disney for $4.05B. GTA 5 has almost made in 4 months what a massively popular film studio has made in 43 years.

Ridiculous assumption, probably 80%+ of sales are the standard edition, seeing as the other two were in limited quantities, and you're ignoring the fact that the retailers do make a profit when selling the game, rockstar has made a huge profit, sure, but them making 3.2 billion at this moment in time?

Like I said, it was a very rough average. I can't edit what it says now but a better wording would've been that the game has generated around that area, not that it all went to Rockstar.
Regardless, it's a few more coppers in the wallet to continue the franchise and hopefully get it to more platforms :v:
Be nice if they put some money into making multiplayer fun and entertaining
Oh well, I got my moneys worth and then some out of singleplayer
r* prolly gets like $8 per sale
Still a ton of money. But it all has to be distributed to employees. The credits were really fucking long. I was surprised how many people went into the game.
Too bad even with the amount of money they made they can't seem to fix the problems GTA Online has.
Even if R* gets a fraction of the 60 bucks, it's still a shit-load of money.

Even taking into account special editions what kind of backwards number is this? The UK has shit retail prices but not £60 bad...

So much money no space in office for dev team
Didn't Activision claim that they would beat GTA 5 in sales or something like that a while back?
Didn't Activision claim that they would beat GTA 5 in sales or something like that a while back?
they beat gta in sales within 24 hours of release

Again, it was rough and mainly assumption based for a vague idea. With the special edition being £60 and the collector's edition being £120, I'd have assumed it'd be around that area with more buying the cheaper editions.
Even then, at base price of £40, that means roughly £1.3B has been generated overall as a result.

Wasn't that on a technicality, like GTA's sales were to customers but CoD's were to retailers?

As far as I know CoD had more pre-orders than GTAV, so it technically had more sales in the first second than GTAV, since they counted pre-orders.
Update: According to the ongoing conference call, Take Two has made a $2.38 billion profit, 78% of which was GTA V alone, for those of you wondering about a more accurate + final number than mine.

Activision announced that they had sold $1B to retailers before the 3 days that GTA 5 sold that much to customers, but refused to release how much had actually been sold to customers.

I recall someone saying that overall sales were down from BLOPS 2.
Add another 10 with a PC release rockstar?

That's not how money works
Lucasfilm was bought for $4.05b, but that's a subjective number agreed on by the parties involve and can't be taken as an objective value of the business.
Also sale price isn't the same as the amount a business has earned since formation. Lucasfilm would've made far more than 4.05billion since conception

They said "We hope to outsell GTA with CoD sometime in the future"
Add another 10 with a PC release rockstar?
It's already been announced.
Just wait, it'll happen then we'll see who gets the last laugh. [sp]Hopefully me?[/sp]
It's already been announced.
Pretty sure it hasn't
It's already been announced.
What?
Add another 10 with a PC release rockstar?
It was only a matter of time before that kind of post would happen.
Activision announced that they had sold $1B to retailers before the 3 days that GTA 5 sold that much to customers, but refused to release how much had actually been sold to customers.
So basically they didn't out-sell GTAV in any way? Sales to retailers means absolutely jack shit.
Three million more and it will be the highest selling stand-alone video game of the seventh generation surpassing Mario Kart Wii.

That was supposed to be for last Friday, which as you see nothing happened.
And yet we don't have 32.5 million new murders on the street? Hmm..
It must feel amazing to know your work is being enjoyed by millions of people around the world.

Did you really just try to tie GTA:V into murders?

He was joking.
