Freddie Gray, a Baltimore man injured during an arrest by Baltimore police last week, died Sunday at Shock Trauma, prompting protests by city residents and out-of-town activists and promises from city officials for a thorough investigation. Gray, 25, died a week after he suffered a broken vertabra after being arrested near Gilmor Homes in Sandtown-Winchester. Police have not given a cause for Gray's injuries or specified why he was arrested, citing an investigation into the incident. Officials are expected to look into any criminal conduct by Gray and whether criminal charges against officers are warranted.

William "Billy" Murphy Jr., a lawyer for Gray's family, contradicted a Police Department timeline of the arrest, which said medics were called to the Western District station 30 minutes after the police van carrying Gray left the scene. Murphy said he has information indicating Gray was at the police station for an hour before medics were called. The attorney also said that the city has a camera above where the arrest occurred and requested that the footage be released to the public. "We believe the police are keeping the circumstances of Freddie's death secret until they develop a version of events that will absolve them of all responsibility," Murphy said. "However, his family and the citizens of Baltimore deserve to know the real truth; and we will not stop until we get justice for Freddie."

The U.S. Department of Justice is conducting a separate review of complaints about Baltimore's Police Department at Batts' request. That request followed a Baltimore Sun investigation that found taxpayers had paid nearly $6 million since 2011 to settle more than 100 lawsuits alleging police brutality and other misconduct.
Baltimore Sun
Lovely news from where I live.
WHY do titles of EXTREME ARTICLES have to CONSTANTLY CAPITALIZE WORDS, is it meant to MAKE IT MORE HARD HITTING and SCARY?
WHY do titles of EXTREME ARTICLES have to CONSTANTLY CAPITALIZE WORDS, is it meant to MAKE IT MORE HARD HITTING and SCARY?
You answered your own question.
WHY do titles of EXTREME ARTICLES have to CONSTANTLY CAPITALIZE WORDS, is it meant to MAKE IT MORE HARD HITTING and SCARY?
funny thing; I see this done with all forms of articles to get more clicks. Not particularly 'extreme' articles. Nothing else to say about the article other than that? Pretty shitty story. The fact that the attorney can so easily say this about his city doesn't exactly give me a good feeling
"We believe the police are keeping the circumstances of Freddie's death secret until they develop a version of events that will absolve them of all responsibility," Murphy said.
Original Post
Why did you put 'virtually' in quotes? Why does it matter what race the victim was? That shouldn't be an important detail. Why is there so much not-shocking bold text in your quotes? Why are the gory words in that video capitalized, but not "beating"? I keep seeing these over and over from US news, it's as if you're all trying to create and escalate race/police issues.... Have you considered not doing that?

Because if you want someone casually reading the thread to notice it they might only read the bold parts [editline]20th April 2015[/editline] also ^
saw some protesters going down the street from where I live just outside the city

I think FP is getting way too "Republican" in these situations.
Why did you put 'virtually' in quotes? Why does it matter what race the victim was? Man that video shows the dude totally fucked up but it doesn't really show what happened before. It kinda looks like they knocked him off a bike or something? The thing I hate about stuff like this is that people immediately start using these incidents to push their agenda before all the evidence is on the table and the victim gets knocked aside.
Documents: Freddie Gray Arrested Without Incident http://www.wbal.com/article/114668/2/documents-freddie-gray-arrested-without-incident Uhh video says otherwise.

Have you considered not doing that?
I put virtually in quotes because it's the word the family's lawyer uses in the article, quotes for a quote. If you find his racial description disagreeable then why not his gender? Should I just have titled it "Baltimore Cops Kill Person"? And I'm not sure what you mean by "shocking", they were just what I thought were the most important bits from the sections I highlighted for the skim readers. I can't answer for the video since it isn't mine. Quibbles with capitalization and quotations in a video title or a headline isn't escalating anything. Armed police acting with impunity and killing unarmed black citizens, only being held accountable because of video evidence is a far greater escalation of race/police problems I think.
Don't run from the police, unless you want to get taken down harder than an NFL football player. It was probably the bike cops tackle that nearly severed the mans spine and ultimately resulted in his death. I'd like to know why he ran away from the cops in the first place to be honest, and I doubt it's because he had a meager switchblade on him. I know he didn't run because he "feared for his life", that excuse is in the same category as "god made me do it".

Cops want to go home to their families at the end of their shift. If you break a bone or die as a result of a tackle, well that's on you.
Are we reading the same source here, guys? The police said that Gray was fine, speaking, and not mortally wounded when he was put into the police van. 30 or so minutes later, the man is literally broken. Something shady went down and the police are trying to be quiet about it. They said the arrest was nonviolent, so what's going on? If Gray violently resisted arrest later on, the police wouldn't be quiet about that. They aren't keeping their stories straight and the lack of transparency is unsettling.
since this is baltimore i'd like to know what David Simon thinks about this since he also knows the BPD after working it for like 12 years he'd have a rather unique insight to this
If he ran and a cop tackled him, it's his own fault.
Here's a more in-depth source: http://www.cnn.com/2015/04/20/us/baltimore-freddie-gray-death/# Correctly done tackles usually don't paralyze people. I'm more concerned in what the police are saying. The stories are all fucked up. Why are they saying he was arrested without incident, yet a man is dead? All of the police officers involved claimed no force was used. Still, a video providing evidence of force exists. Can you explain those contradictions? Can you explain the 30 minutes? I can't:
That was at 8:54 a.m. At 9:24 a.m., police called an ambulance to pick Gray up at the Western District police station. Murphy wants to know what happened in those 30 minutes in between. At some point after his arrest, Gray requested medical attention, said Rodriguez, the deputy police commissioner. Gray also asked for an inhaler, Rodriguez said. The ambulance took Gray to the University of Maryland Medical Center's Shock Trauma Center. "He lapsed into a coma, died, was resuscitated, stayed in a coma and on Monday underwent extensive surgery at Shock Trauma to save his life," Murphy said. "He clung to life for seven days." Tubes, wires and supports protruded from Gray as he lay in his hospital bed in a photo Murphy passed on to the media.

"I'll tell you what I do know, and right now there's still a lot of questions I don't know. I know that when Mr. Gray was placed inside that van, he was able to talk. He was upset. And when Mr. Gray was taken out of that van, he could not talk, and he could not breathe," Baltimore Deputy Police Commissioner Jerry Rodriguez told reporters Monday.
He was restrained during the ride. I'm starting to think Gray might've died from a nickel ride or beating.

"I am deeply troubled by this,” Rodriguez said.
Wall Street Journal: http://www.wsj.com/articles/baltimore-officials-begin-criminal-investigation-into-freddie-grays-death-1429479377
Video of Mr. Gray’s arrest taken by a bystander appears to show officers dragging him to a police van. But Mr. Rodriguez said he has seen video that appears to show Mr. Gray helping himself into the police van. Mr. Rodriguez said it is unclear whether Mr. Gray was injured while being transported in the van. “We have no physical, video or any other evidence of an altercation that would have resulted in this [injury to Mr. Gray], so the question, is how and why?” Mr. Rodriguez said. “And more importantly, if there is anything contributory from our agency, how can we prevent that? We’re not there yet, but we will get there.”
Also, could you please answer my questions of why the police have conflicting answers?
Is it not possible that he was injured, but due to adrenaline his injuries didn't take full effect until the rush wore off? Or am I completely speaking out of my ass?

As a Baltimore area resident, I'm surprised there aren't more of these stories.

Why aren't either of you two answering my question about the conflicting answers. No force = no broken spine, right? A man with a broken back caused by force is a bit of a big detail to get confused about.

Criminals are dumb.
I've seen arrest videos where they scream in pain for no reason. Criminals are dumb.
No reason? Being tackled into the pavement has to hurt like a bitch. Being held against the pavement has to hurt a lot more. We're not talking about those other videos We're talking about the ones involving Freddie Gray.
