Linda Carroll writes: Your teen has been begging for months to get a tongue piercing. All her friends have them and she can’t understand why you are such an old fuddy duddy, steadfastly refusing to let someone stick a stud through her tongue. OK, it’s icky, but you’re starting to lose ground with that argument.
Researchers to the rescue. A new study, published in the Journal of Clinical Orthodontics, shows that tongue studs cause a gap-toothed grins.
Apparently, kids like to play with their tongue studs, often pushing the barbell shaped ornaments back and forth against their front teeth. In the case described in the new study, a young woman managed to create a significant space between her upper teeth -- called a diastema -- by periodically wedging the thin part of the barbell between them and wiggling it around over the course of seven years.
“It is a basic tenet of orthodontia that force, over time, moves teeth," explains the study’s lead author, Dr. Sawsan Tabbaa, an assistant professor of orthodontics at the University of Buffalo School of Dental Medicine.
The new report comes as no surprise to Dr. Brian Martin, a chief of the division of pediatric dentistry at the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Over the years, Martin has seen plenty of similar piercing related spaces develop in his hip young patients. But that’s not the worst scenario, he says.
“I’ve seen patients fracture their teeth by repeatedly clacking the piercing against them,” says Martin, “Or sometimes a kid will break a tooth when she inadvertently gets the piercing between her teeth as she bites down on some food.”
Ultimately, the 26-year-old woman in the study got her teeth fixed with braces. And there’s the rub -- and your new best argument. Is it worth being like all the other kids if you’re going to wind up with braces or a broken tooth?
that looks fucking stupid
since shen were tongue piercings a hipster thing?
Everyone I see with them is usually some piercing addict goth/scene/whatever kid
Those things are disgusting.
Piercings/gauges are the stupidest shit i've ever seen
That's retarded.
Anything that's not an earring looks like shit, though there are some cases where a nose ring can be pulled off properly, usually for girls.
The only other place I can accept people piercing is the belly button, and this is only on women.
Everything else should just be limited to the ear.

Fixed.

Eh I don't really mind if guys wear earrings as long as they don't exaggerate and have 300 of them with these weird shapes and shit.
But I personally would never even consider something like earrings.
Ears and Nose is enough. Thats what I think.
So pretty much don't stick it between your teeth like an idiot over the course of 7 years and don't bite down on the absolute center of your tongue accidentally? This article doesn't really have much of a point, and I hate tongue piercings.
Tongue rings are pretty stupid because besides this, they can erode the enamel of the teeth pretty bad. Also any piercing not done by a professional can cause problems. Coming from a guy with a lip ring.
Tongue piercings are kinda eh for me. I do want a small lower lip piercing though.
Tongue piercings are kindof gross for me. And there are some people who just SHOULD NOT have lip piercings. If it's done right/well, or it actually looks good on the person, I'm fine with it.
I have one of those naturally :frown:
I cant find a woman attractive with weird stuff like lips and tongue piercing. It just scares the shit out of me and ruins that clean feeling.

Good for you, I disagree as do many people.
As for putting a space between your teeth with your tongue barbel? That's not smart or common.
Not only hipsters do this, lots of females do it. For what reason is beyond me.
In addition to tongue piercings, why do some people get those inserts that expand their earlobe? There's no way that doesn't hurt.
Certain piercings suit certain people. I had a single lip piercing and I still have a bellyring.
But too much is TOO MUCH, which is what some people don't get.
Snakebites, angelbites, tongue, nose, eyebrow, multiple piercings on the ears, spacers, fleshies...
I just want to take them near a giant magnet.

It doesn't hurt much at all. Mine are large enough for a pencil to easily slide through my earings themselves, and it only hurt once or twice in the process of doing it, and not for long.

Some people really do go overboard giving everyone that does anything a bad name to people like those who inhabit basements and facepunch. Some piercings are quite attractive, many girls with lip rings are quite attractive with them and more so because of them, tongue piercings are great for kissing and oral, and anything else is just a question of "does it suit you" and "is it too much?".
Though, I don't expect facepunch to understand.

Cause they're causing harm to you or preventing some of your rights?

Obviously doesn't understand dark humour.
No, of course not.
A mate of mine has all of the piercings I mentioned and more and he's a great guy but I just don't understand why.
Though kudos to those who aren't scared of what people think.

I had my ears initially pierced in April. This picture was taken yesterday.

Granted my ears aren't stretched as large as some of the more extreme examples, but the holes in my ears are in fact the size you see (i can fit a sharpie through no problem), and no it didn't hurt. Ear stretching looks painful, but its really just the process of picking up the slack over gradual changes. As long as you're not a complete fuckwit about rushing it, it wont hurt and they'll shrink back down if you take them out for a month.

[Ignore the hat, its a cycling cap being modeled for a store.]
She's attractive, but the holes in her ears don't work towards that. The cap is really what saves the day in the end, I would purchase one.

I quite like her ears, and her lips. They suit her beautifully. I would actually think she was less attractive without them.

The ears kinda ruin it for me, but the lip piercings looks good on her.

Yeah the whole idea with the second thing is to do it slowly to cause as little pain as possible, do it too fast and it will rip the ear lobe. In really bad cases of people being retards then they can rip clean through their earlobe.
