When the President took office, he directed all of his policymakers to develop policies based on science and research, not ideology or politics. So our concern about marijuana is based on what the science tells us about the drug's effects.
According to scientists at the National Institutes of Health- the world's largest source of drug abuse research - marijuana use is associated with addiction, respiratory disease, and cognitive impairment. We know from an array of treatment admission information and Federal data that marijuana use is a significant source for voluntary drug treatment admissions and visits to emergency rooms. Studies also reveal that marijuana potency has almost tripled over the past 20 years, raising serious concerns about what this means for public health – especially among young people who use the drug because research shows their brains continue to develop well into their 20's. Simply put, it is not a benign drug.
Like many, we are interested in the potential marijuana may have in providing relief to individuals diagnosed with certain serious illnesses. That is why we ardently support ongoing research into determining what components of the marijuana plant can be used as medicine. To date, however, neither the FDA nor the Institute of Medicine have found smoked marijuana to meet the modern standard for safe or effective medicine for any condition.
As a former police chief, I recognize we are not going to arrest our way out of the problem. We also recognize that legalizing marijuana would not provide the answer to any of the health, social, youth education, criminal justice, and community quality of life challenges associated with drug use.
That is why the President's National Drug Control Strategy is balanced and comprehensive, emphasizing prevention and treatment while at the same time supporting innovative law enforcement efforts that protect public safety and disrupt the supply of drugs entering our communities. Preventing drug use is the most cost-effective way to reduce drug use and its consequences in America. And, as we've seen in our work through community coalitions across the country, this approach works in making communities healthier and safer. We're also focused on expanding access to drug treatment for addicts. Treatment works. In fact, millions of Americans are in successful recovery for drug and alcoholism today. And through our work with innovative drug courts across the Nation, we are improving our criminal justice system to divert non-violent offenders into treatment.
Our commitment to a balanced approach to drug control is real. This last fiscal year alone, the Federal Government spent over $10 billion on drug education and treatment programs compared to just over $9 billion on drug related law enforcement in the U.S.
Thank you for making your voice heard. I encourage you to take a moment to read about the President's approach to drug control to learn more.

Political. Fucking. Euphemism.
those corrupt motherfuckers
Expecting anything more than this response would be insane, but I'm just amazed they even formed a response.
Same thing they've been saying for the last 20 fucking years, and it's all DARE Bullshit Propaganda.
TLDR; We ain't gonna do shit.
So what, who was it that responded?
Nevermind. It is "Gil Kerlikowske" the national drug czar.

You know, what they've written in the statement (the factual information about weed) is actually accurate. However much you would like it to be all lies, there are risks to marijuana. Yes, the method of teaching it (take drugs and YOULL DIEEEEE) is complete bullshit, but the evidence behind this response is not.
You still have to realise that Marijuana isn't completely harmless, regardless of whenever or not alcohol is worse or not.

I'm for legalization. However, it's silly to make such a big change when they aren't sure of the repercussions.

Smoking weed is bad for you and that's what they're talking about, vaporized weed supposedly has none of the bad shit.

Drano, among other things, will kill you faster than either of those things, but you can buy it at your local grocery store. Shouldn't it be illegal or something?
Obummer 2012.
The term "house negro" has never been truer!

People don't intend to regularly drink Drano now, do they?

legalize and regulate, like with alcohol, is way better than what they're doing now. are you gonna argue against that?
[editline]28th October 2011[/editline]
do i have a right to choose what i put into my body?
People don't intend to regularly drink Drano now, do they?
That's besides the point.
they said that to people who's brains are still developing it may be harmful, but what about everyone in the country that's over 30? fuck'em right?
[editline]28th October 2011[/editline]
this is answer is so fucking bullshit
That's besides the point.
No it's not. Things you put into your body are an entirely separate class from everything else. Myriad potentially harmful chemicals are legal but safely used.
Here's what the white house needs to do:
•Legalize all drugs and regulate them.
•Educate the public with the truth about all drugs. Not the bullshit they feed you in D.A.R.E.
•Allow citizens to make informed decisions
•DEA gets abolished, use that money to where it needs to go
That's besides the point.
No, id say that's quite exactly the point. Are you saying it should be illegal to sell computers in shops, because if you grind up the silicon and eat it its bad for you?
How about electricity? You can stick your fingers in a socket and kill yourself with it. Should that be illegal too?
Its peoples intentions and expectations with a product that matter, not necessarily the lethality of the product itself

The logic in it is horrible. Fuck, they said marijuana caused EMERGENCY ROOM VISITS
