I know there is another thread in news, but im hoping to collate all info into this one big one. Lets all hope he recovers.
Fernando Alonso took pole position in a chaotic finish to qualifying at the Hungarian Grand Prix yesterday after Felipe Massa was airlifted to hospital as the result of a high-speed accident.
Massa’s Ferrari careered off the track at more than 200km/h after being hit by flying debris.
The 28-year-old Brazilian — winner of 11 GPs and the world championship runner-up in 2008 — came off at turn four after being struck by a piece of suspension that had flown off the rear of compatriot Rubens Barrichello’s Brawn GP car.
Massa will undergo surgery, said a Ferrari spokesman.
“Felipe was conscious when he arrived at the hospital and his general condition remains stable.
“Following a complete medical examination, it emerged that he had suffered cuts on his forehead, damage to his skull and concussion.
“Surgery is therefore necessary. After that he will remain under observation in intensive care,” the spokesman said.
Massa was hit in the face and was momentarily concussed as his car skewed off the circuit and into the tyre barriers.
The Brawn team confirmed that Barrichello’s car lost a piece of suspension and on- board film from Massa’s Ferrari showed him being struck, losing control and going off the track.
“My thoughts right now are with Felipe and his family who are really close friends of mine and I hope he is going to be okay and will be fit as soon as possible,” said Barrichello.
Massa was lifted out of his driver’s cockpit after being attended to by medical staff and then taken to the circuit medical centre.
The accident took place shortly before the end of the Q2 mini- session during the hour-long qualifying period in which Massa managed to clock the eighth- fastest time.
Barrichello said that he believed a rear bar or rear spring had fallen off — “something broke” — after qualifying in 13th, but made no mention of Massa’s crash.
“He was very agitated,” said Barrichello. “He had a cut in his head, which could have been from the part of my car that was on the track. He was talking, was conscious but they have to analyse the cut. He was moving his arms and legs. They had to make him sleep because he was agitated.”
Massa’s teammate Kimi Raikkonen said: “Felipe was very unlucky. It was just an unlucky situation.”
The incident again threw the spotlight on safety in motor racing just a week after Britain’s Henry Surtees was killed in an accident in a Formula Two race at Brands Hatch.
The son of former world champion John Surtees was struck by a wheel that flew off a competitor’s car.
Massa has been with Ferrari since 2006 and was pipped by one point by Lewis Hamilton in the title race in 2008.
He is currently in fifth place in the drivers’ championship with 22 points.
Meanwhile Spain’s Alonso took pole position. The Renault driver’s fastest lap of 1min 21.596sec was enough for the two-time world champion’s first pole since the 2007 Italian Grand Prix.
Alonso was only confirmed in pole after lengthy confusion in the paddock as all nine drivers in the final session waited for the results after the scoring system went down.
“My team said they didn’t know what position I was in,” said Alonso, who picked up his first career win in Hungary six years ago.
“When I got out of the car I asked other drivers how they had done. Some told me two or three-tenths of a second slower than me so I got excited.”
Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel was eventually confirmed to start second ahead of teammate Mark Webber, while McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg of Williams rounded out the top five.
Overall leader Jenson Button will start from eighth and teammate Barrichello from 13th for the British team’s worst qualifying result of the season.
The Red Bull team now appears to have overtaken its main rival performance-wise. Button has 68 points after the first nine races to lead Vettel by 21 points and Webber by 22.5 with eight races remaining. Barrichello is fourth with 44 points.

Felipe Massa will need to undergo surgery after it emerged he has suffered bone damage of his skull and a brain concussion in his accident at the Hungarian Grand Prix.
The Brazilian will be forced to miss the race after he was hit in the head by debris believed to belong to Rubens Barrichello's car.
Massa was airlifted to a Budapest hospital, where he remains in stable condition.
Ferrari said in a statement that Massa will need to undergo surgery and will have to stay under observation in intensive care for an undisclosed period of time.
"After the accident during the qualifying session of the Grand Prix of Hungary, Felipe Massa was airlifted to the AEK hospital in Budapest," the statement said. "Felipe was conscious at the arrival at the hospital and his general conditions remain stable.
"Following a complete medical examination it emerged that he had suffered a cut on his forehead, a bone damage of his skull and a brain concussion. These conditions need to be operated on after which he will remain under observation in intensive care."
The team said further information will be released later tonight.

Felipe Massa has successfully undergone surgery for the injuries he suffered in his accident in qualifying in Hungary.
Ferrari said the driver will now remain under observation in the intensive care unit at the AEK hospital in Budapest, where the Brazilian was taken after being hit by a spring during Q2.
Massa had suffered a damaged skull and brain concussion, as well as a cut on his forehead.
The Italian team said a further update on his condition will be issued tomorrow morning.
Brawn confirmed the spring belonged to a damper from Rubens Barrichello's Brawn car, weighing around 800 grams.
"We had a problem at the back, so we are still investigating and we haven't had the piece back from the FIA yet so once we get it back we can understand what occurred and then draw some conclusions," said team boss Ross Brawn.
"It is the first time we've had a problem with the car. The car has been really reliable and we are obviously looking all through the data to understand what caused the problem. It is hard to comment at the moment until we have studied everything.
"We put a new component on Jenson's car in qualifying just to be safe, but we are still studying everything that went on to understand what happened."

That picture isn't even bad, I wouldn't consider it NSFW.
Damn, he really has fucking bad luck to get hit by that suspension right into his helmet. But except of some bad wounds on his head he looks ok...

Just a warning for the people who get effected by gory pics.
ouuuuch :aaaaa:
I wouldn't call that ''gory''
Pretty scary seeing how this is the second time in a short timespan that a part from another car hits the head of the driver behind.
He's just being nice to people with faint hearts or anyone that just wants to read the story, give him a break.
Sad news.
Favourite Formula 1 driver, as he is so passionate about racing.
Hope he recovers soon.
Hope that he doesn't lose his eyesight on the left eye, must be tought driving F1 with one eye.
This is also the same type of accident that killed racing legend Ayrton Senna
10€ says Jeremy Clarkson is going to say F1 just got better.
And 5€ says someone's going to say NASCAR's better in this thread.

No, because after Richard drove the Formula Renault, they accepted how difficult it was to race an F1 car, and the amount of danger involved.
And who actually gives a flying fuck about NASCAR, all the do is drive in a circle for a few hours.
