Study: Exposing Kids To 10 Hours Of Science A Year Makes Them Smarter
80 replies, posted
Low-income minority fourth-graders from south L.A. improved their test scores in math and language after they got just a handful of science lessons, a new study found. College students studying science presented 10 separate one-hour lessons, and the kids rose up whole percentile ranks in other subjects.
"A lot of students say things like, 'I didn't know science was fun,'" said Samantha Gizerian, now a clinical assistant professor at Washington State University. Apparently they also showed a greater interest in taking books home to read, and a greater willingness to practice math. The lessons were simple, too--in one case, a college student just brought in some microscope slides from his lab.
Gizerian says the lessons taught science, but also acted "as a spark to ignite a child's interest in lifelong learning in all areas." She presented her findings at a recent Society for Neuroscience meeting.
That's right, little Timmy.
Science is fun.
So they're trying to tell me that teaching someone with authentic visual aids represents an increase in knowledge. I wouldn't of known that.
I watched a surprisingly entertaining documentary about a terminally ill man who allowed his body to be mummified ala the ancient Egyptians.
I learned about:
Chemistry
Culture
Decomposition
History
In a period of just 50 or so minutes. I can definitely see this working.
As a child, I watched tons and tons of Star Trek: TNG. I wonder if science fiction helps any.
When people say 'I didn't know science was fun' I want to punch them in the face. Its 20-fucking-12, almost everything you use, touch, and look at is a product of science. How ignorant do you have to be to not, at the very least, appreciate science?

Also, teaching kids through hands on and visual aids instead of feeding them condensed information for tests is the best way to do it, who'd have guessed :downs:

Only if it encourages you to go out and do some research of your own. In and of itself it probably does nothing.
it couldn't make them smarter only more educated. intelligence comes from genetics
so making kids smarter makes them smarter
who would have thought
I got to do some science experiments with cub scouts the other day. They seemed to enjoy it.

You apparently rolled snake eyes in that genetic lottery if you genuinely believe this.
It's true, I always feel smart after watching this.

I hate when people say "science is fun" or "science is cool" or "i love science"
science is everything, it's such a broad, meaningless term because of the vast amount of stuff that it encompasses. to me it just seems weird when people say "i love science" because it's not just a single thing like history is. it's everything.

furthermore i'd be tempted to say science is fun, but i fucking hate chemistry. physics and biology are where it's at

Science!
So all these guys who have been exposing things to kids have really been trying to help them all this time?
Maybe it's because if one can actually see the studies have actual practical use which is fun and interesting and that you have a reason to give a fuck.
Learning in sake of learning is terribly demotivating. I couldn't ever give a shit about grades or anything. The only actual motivation ever was for me hearing something actually interesting.
A year? Kids should use this as an excuse to skip the entire school year.
"Yes ma'am, ten hours is the requirement. Goodbye"
Kids should have 10 hours of science a month, if not a week in my book.

every second

how enlightening
What about 10 hours of bible study?
When people say 'I didn't know science was fun' I want to punch them in the face.
they're kids
What about 10 hours of bible study?
really now
What about 10 hours of bible study?
It'll probably improve your reading comprehension and analyzing skills.
I watched shitloads of Bill Nye in my day and I can back this up
bill nye and mythbusters are two great ways to get kids involved with science. i dont know a single person who finds those kinds of shows boring. i think more money should go into making programs like this

Well if you grew up in the L.A. ghettos as a kid and were legally forced to attend a school that can barely afford books until you're 18, I kinda think it would be a tad more difficult to have the same level of appreciation for science compared to people who are regularly exposed to it
info from bill nye stuck with me way longer than fucking art attack
that pva glue was like liquid crack to him, as if any of us had that shit lying around to make his stupid art
*pile of shit* "add some pva glue and water, and it should look like this! *michaelangelo's sistine chapel ceiling*
replace those shitty live-action shows on disney channels with something from NatGeo

man you have to see it from both perspectives. sometimes peoples introduction to science is a bunch of chemical formulas/biological terms/whatever they do in physics that make no sense to them, and it's very rare that one enjoys something that seems impossible to understand.
like i hate math, so much. do i think math is useless? fuck no! but i dread math classes because i guess i never understood the concept enough to admire how useful it is. not that its too late to do so, i want to go back to learning a bit more math so i'm thinking of doing a business minor. its just yeah, im gona be the voice of the dumbass population here
