First American Woman in Space has Died, Comes Out in Obituary
SALLY Ride, the first American woman to fly in space, has died to pancreatic cancer after a 17-month battle.
NASA colleagues have described Ms Ride, 61, as a hero. She became the first American woman in space on the Space Shuttle Challenger in 1983 and later returned to the final frontier a year later.
Ride's organisation revealed in a statement memorialising her death that she had been in a romantic relationship with long-time close friend, Tam O'Shaughnessy, for 27 years.
The couple had known each other since they were 12 and had written several science books together.
Bear Ride, her sister, told Buzzfeed: "I hope it makes it easier for kids growing up gay that they know that another one of their heroes was like them."
US President Barack Obama said in a statement: "As the first American woman to travel into space, Sally was a national hero and a powerful role model."
NASA Administrator Charles Bolden said: "Sally Ride broke barriers with grace and professionalism – and literally changed the face of America’s space program.
"She will be missed, but her star will always shine brightly.'
She is survived by her partner Tam, her mother, sister, niece and nephew. Ride's memorial fund will be in support of action on pancreatic cancer.

A pity, died relatively young too
You should change the title so that it's "Into Space" not "In Space" as I thought she died while IN space.
But I hope she passed away peacefully and her family isn't hit hard emotionally because of her death.
A proud martyr in the fight against space patriarchy!
man, tough audience
so does this also make her the first homosexual astronaut?

what so you literally thought he was serious about a space patriarchy?
Woah I heard about this but I haven't seen anywhere reporting the gay thing, that's pretty awesome to have a legend like that come out
How has nobody mentioned that her sisters name is fucking Bear Ride?
Her actual name is Karen "Bear" Ride, and she said in an interview regarding why Sally (Kristen Ride) hadn't come out as gay before her obituary.
Of Sally Ride's sexual orientation, Bear Ride said, "Sally didn't use labels. Sally had a very fundamental sense of privacy, it was just her nature, because we're Norwegians, through and through."
Because both their parents are Norwegians who moved to Los Angeles.

Wow. Sally Ride was like, the most ideal American. A child of immigrants who used nothing but pure merit to become the first Woman AND the first homosexual in the last great frontier humanity has. I'm really bummed I don't know more about this fantastic human being, R.I.P.

I wouldn't call space the 'last great frontier'. There's still the oceans, if not even moreso the oceans.
I wouldn't call space the 'last great frontier'. There's still the oceans, if not even moreso the oceans.
Eh, well while the oceans are very interesting and also very large, Space outdoes it by far.
If not just for the fact that space is almost impossibly much larger than the oceans, imagine all the places in Space that also have oceans that are amazing as well.
Problem is that Space takes a lot more time to explore.
The oceans are also very amazing though.
More frontiers may open in the future too. Who knows.
I wouldn't call space the 'last great frontier'. There's still the oceans, if not even moreso the oceans.
There are frontiers all around us, but we just don't know it. Parts of cities that you walk by everyday but never think about. Places that nobody goes to anymore, sewage systems that have been unused for several decade, huge underground networks of tunnels in the water treatment system that aren't just pipes. I mean shit that looks like a mako reactors underground and nobody knows about it, even though we built it
I'm almost 100% sure the WBC will announce that they're protesting her funeral tomorrow, if they haven't already.
