As the U.S. prepares to reopen its embassy in communist Cuba, relations with another Latin American nation — oil-rich Venezuela — are crumbling. President Nicolas Maduro accuses the U.S. of plotting a coup against him, and is expelling most U.S. diplomats from Venezuela. He is also demanding that Americans secure visas to enter the country. The visa requirement is still so new that upon my arrival in Caracas this week without one, the immigration official doesn't even notice. She stamps my U.S. passport and says, "Welcome."
I'm here in time for the second anniversary of the death of Hugo Chavez, who led Venezuela's socialist revolution until he succumbed to cancer. The events include military parades and a modern dance performance about Chavez, whom many Venezuelans still adore. By contrast, Maduro is struggling. He has failed to tame one of the world's highest inflation rates, food shortages are getting worse and the economy last year contracted by almost 3 percent.
But instead of rebooting his economic policies, Maduro is lashing out at critics. Last month, police arrested Antonio Ledezma, the opposition mayor of Caracas, for allegedly taking part in a U.S.-backed conspiracy against the government. Ledezma and U.S. officials have strongly denied these accusations.
So much for the Bolivarian Revolution.
Not sure what a few of our local Venis would say, but for an outsider, it looks like war is on the horizon this year.

I think a civil war would quickly devolve into a free-for-all between the opposition's radicals, the Goverment, the chavists who hate the current government, the local criminals and everyone else who's just trying to live another day.
It's incredible it's taking Maduro so long to accept that he screwed up and that the current system doesn't works.

Hopefully it doesn't come to that. It'd be a fucking nightmare for anyone living there.

It's personal for me. I got family and friends living up there.
Is the picture on the left a 3D model of the dude on the right?
Let's hope it doesn't come to civil war.

Isn't Caracas like.. the most dangerous city in the world?
Boy i truly hope people stand up or at least do fucking something, the situation over here is horrible.. going trough 3 or 4 supermarkets a week just to find 1st primary need goods is A horrible experience, everything is extreamly expensive here to the point where you cant buy anything with the minium wage . at a bit of bread..Just to get by and maintain my family i had to resort to sell the Dolalrs i make trough freelance programming and sell them for bolivars on the "black market". As well the massive insecurity rates to the point where hearing taht one of my friend close ones died isnt a surprise...
Not to mention the bolivar isnt worth anything anymore i really hope i can leave this country either by the end of this year or beginning of the next one,
Surprised there's not a single Chavez painting behind that picture.

Well, Chavez himself liked to name-drop Simón Bolívar a lot so I guess it makes sense

Yes

Yes, it's horrible and they use it everywhere, they say that they got some experts to reconstruct Simon Bolivar's face out of his remains and that's what they came up with, and it looks fucking stupid. There's actually a trend with our government where they make the worst possible fucking design and stylistic choices in everything they do. It's apparently because they hire the cheapest possible graphic designers they can find.
Anyway, the government is very likely to collapse, soon-ish, but I highly doubt there'll be civil war. There may be guerrillas sparking up in the more impoverished states during the transition period, but what is definite is that Maduro is not gonna be in charge for much longer.

TRULY hope so man, it kinda hurts to see most of your friends and family leave the country due to the fucked up situation we are in.. but yeah something has to happen soon...
His competence isn't surprising considering the man never got past high school and before politics was only a bus driver and trade union representative.

It already is a nightmare.
