In 2010, women and girls nationwide experienced about 270,000 rapes or sexual assaults, compared with 556,000 in 1995, according to a Bureau of Justice Statistics survey released Thursday. Rates declined from a peak of 5 per 1,000 women in 1995 to 1.8 per 1,000 women in 2005. The figure remained unchanged from 2005 to 2010. [...] On Thursday, President Barack Obama will sign legislation updating the Violence Against Women Act, which funds training for police and for judges, strengthening the criminal justice system's response to crimes against women. [...] Authorities regard the reporting of rape and sexual assaults to police as an important deterrent. But the reporting trend has been uneven. Reporting occurred in 29 percent of rapes and sexual assaults in 1995, went up to a high of 56 percent in 2003 and then declined to 35 percent in 2010.
Turns out not all news is bad news.
I think it was a bit cynical for me to think "yeah, REPORTED cases" However this is still good news, regardless - lets just hope this is close to an actual figure
I think it was a bit cynical for me to think "yeah, REPORTED cases" However this is still good news, regardless - lets just hope this is close to an actual figure
If anything I would think that the percentage of reported cases would go up because of how easy it is to document things compared to 10 years ago. That is speculation on my part, but it is possible that this may be even larger than it appears.
I think it was a bit cynical for me to think "yeah, REPORTED cases" However this is still good news, regardless - lets just hope this is close to an actual figure
The problem with that is there is no real way to count unreported cases. There is always a chance to for it to go unreported out of fear, but any attempt at getting accurate numbers is impossible, so they kinda don't hold that much weight for arguementive purposes. We might as well be trying to count how many hillpeople are gonna blow themselves up today.
Turns out not all news is bad news.
I have never heard anyone say that.
I think it was a bit cynical for me to think "yeah, REPORTED cases"
If that was the case, it would imply that record keeping of sexual violence has gotten worse (if we assume violence to be stagnant or rising).
I think it was a bit cynical for me to think "yeah, REPORTED cases" However this is still good news, regardless - lets just hope this is close to an actual figure
It has nothing to do with cynicism. Just faulty logic. So you suggest that things used to be a lot better for women decades ago?
Great news, here's to hoping it continues to decline in general.
One ad that I see on the subway many times is one going "1 out of 3 women in the world are victims of assault" In some country perhaps, but globally I doubt.
One ad that I see on the subway many times is one going "1 out of 3 women in the world are victims of assault" In some country perhaps, but globally I doubt.
Edit: Nevermind, last time I heard that statistic, it was appended by "in the US". I got confused; 1 in 3 is probably right globally.
Those statistics are flat out made up.
Couldn't find anything specifically on 1 in 3 in the world, but 'between 15% of women in Japan and 71% of women in Ethiopia reported physical and/or sexual violence by an intimate partner in their lifetime', '1 in 4 women have been the victim of severe physical violence by an intimate partner while 1 in 7 men experienced severe physical violence by an intimate partner.'
Those statistics are flat out made up.
Why? Honestly if you look at the definition of assault I'm surprised it isn't closer to 1 in 1, and with similar numbers for men
I know of 3-4 women who have been sexually assaulted, and out of the amount I'm actually close enough to know something like that, it's a scary high percentage.
Turns out not all news is bad news.
Disagree x 1 cheezey unless your a dick?
It has nothing to do with cynicism. Just faulty logic. So you suggest that things used to be a lot better for women decades ago?
That isn't even close to what he was saying though, what are you talking about?
Yay, progress!
