• Trump appoints Newt Gingrich's wife as ambassador to the Vatican; Holy See unsure about it
The nomination, announced days before Trump is set to meet Pope Francis in Rome, marks the promotion of the wife of one of the president’s most vociferous defenders, who this week claimed the US was in the midst of a one-sided cultural civil war that could “destroy America as we know it”. Gingrich, a lifelong Catholic who is seen as having played a pivotal role in her husband’s 2009 conversion, will play an important role as a mediator and line of communication between Washington and the Holy See. She could help to mend a relationship that became strained when Francis questioned Trump’s Christian faith during the 2016 campaign. --- Gingrich’s views on issues close to Pope Francis’s heart – from the threat of global warming to the need to accept migrants – are not known. But her husband has expressed shifting views on climate change and recently called Europe’s acceptance of migrants an “invitation to disaster”. He has also condemned so-called “sanctuary city” laws that protect undocumented migrants in the US. Joseph Tobin, a newly promoted cardinal in Newark, New Jersey, who is seen as being close to Francis, has called the Trump administration’s threat to such laws “the opposite of what it means to be an American”. A person close to the Vatican said the “jury was still out” on the choice, and that a determination would only be made based on Gingrich’s work. The person noted that high-level and experienced diplomats were often chosen for such senior posts, but added that Gingrich’s presumably strong personal relationship with Trump could prove to be more important than her relative inexperience, and could strengthen ties between the Trump White House and the Holy See. The person said the Vatican believed it was the prerogative of every country to choose their own ambassador, and that Gingrich’s nomination would not be blocked. The remark suggested that Gingrich’s controversial past – she began a relationship with Newt Gingrich while he was married to his second wife – would not prove a hinderance to her nomination, even though adultery is considered a grave sin in the Catholic faith.
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2017/may/20/callista-gingrich-ambassador-holy-see-trump-administration
What even are her qualifications besides loyalty? Is he trying to piss off Catholics by appointing an adulter (which is wrong outside of a religious context anyway)?
Is there anybody in Trump's administration that isn't the close friend/coworker/relative of a Trump associate? It's like he's been watching training videos on how to run an [del]oligarchy[/del] nepotism. Is he trying to piss off Catholics by appointing an adulter (which is wrong outside of a religious context anyway)?
Yeah really. What qualifies her to do this besides helping Gingrich commit adultery?? EDIT: lol I struggled so hard to come up with the word "nepotism" when I wrote this post, then remembered it like 8 hours later
*whoops, misread*
I find it hilariously ironic how these people claim to be so Christian and yet they've married many times and have affairs
I find it hilariously ironic how these people claim to be so Christian and yet they've married many times and have affairs
Well just look at who's president right now and one of the vital demographics for said president. It's fascinating to see the gymnastics in play.
How did she help Gingrich commit adultery?
It's not just in the OP but I made it bold as well :v:
I find it hilariously ironic how these people claim to be so Christian and yet they've married many times and have affairs
Like republicans are anything but hypocrites
What even are her qualifications besides loyalty? Is he trying to piss off Catholics by appointing an adulter (which is wrong outside of a religious context anyway)?
I don't think he cares about anything besides loyalty lol
I find it hilariously ironic how these people claim to be so Christian and yet they've married many times and have affairs
To be fair, Newt was a Protestant at the time of the affair and they're far more lenient on divorce.
What even are her qualifications besides loyalty? Is he trying to piss off Catholics by appointing an adulter (which is wrong outside of a religious context anyway)?
Since the Pope has been very critical of Trump in the past and Trump is a giant man child this could very well be the case.
I find it hilariously ironic how these people claim to be so Christian and yet they've married many times and have affairs
It's k. Jesus died so he can cheat on wives.
Since the Pope has been very critical of Trump in the past and Trump is a giant man child this could very well be the case.
I'm Not Joking but I actually heard some Catholics say Pope Francis is "Red Pope" and a traitor to the religion
I'm Not Joking but I actually heard some Catholics say Pope Francis is "Red Pope" and a traitor to the religion
I've heard some Republicans say that Obama is a lizardman, but that doesn't mean most of them think that. Basing opinions and thoughts on hearsay is Trump level logic.
What even are her qualifications besides loyalty? Is he trying to piss off Catholics by appointing an adulter (which is wrong outside of a religious context anyway)?
She's Catholic, so at least he got at least 1% of the qualifications right.
I find it hilariously ironic how these people claim to be so Christian and yet they've married many times and have affairs
"Don't judge me lest I throw stones at you!" that's probably the correct quotation right? [editline]21st May 2017[/editline]
I'm Not Joking but I actually heard some Catholics say Pope Francis is "Red Pope" and a traitor to the religion
he's ironically hated by American catholics but loved by american catholics. [sp] non US catholics in the americas adore him, US catholics hate him [/sp]
She's Catholic, so at least he got at least 1% of the qualifications right.
She committed adultery so shes not a very good one :U
who this week claimed the US was in the midst of a one-sided cultural civil war that could “destroy America as we know it”.
Well I can't say they're wrong here. Trump and ilk do seem to be trying their best. Luckily they're failing though and doing nothing more than dragging our reputation through the mud.
The nicest thing about a Trump impeachment is going to be watching all of his stooges kicked out on their ass.
The nicest thing about a Trump impeachment is going to be watching all of his stooges kicked out on their ass.
I think it highly depends on who Pence chooses, if he takes office.
I don't get how American Catholics can still call themselves Catholic if they hate the Pope. Shit boggles my mind
I don't get how American Catholics can still call themselves Catholic if they hate the Pope. Shit boggles my mind
Nationalism trumps religion, I suppose. The US is pretty hardcore on the "worship of patriotism" as I've read it put.
